Gibbon Rehabilitation Project
邦涛 · Nature and viewpoints · 1 小时
09:00–16:00 daily; closed Thursdays when last checked
Morning, when the gibbons call
Inside the Bang Pae gate — combine with the waterfall
A volunteer-run centre at the Bang Pae entrance to Khao Phra Thaeo that has been taking in white-handed gibbons rescued from the photo-prop trade since 1992 and releasing family groups back into the forest. Visitors see the animals in the quarantine and rehabilitation enclosures from a distance — there is no handling, which is the point — and volunteers explain the programme. Entry to the project is by donation; the park gate charges foreigners 200 THB. The only ethical primate experience on the island, and a useful one to see before deciding what to do about the animal shows advertised on every tour board.
Project itself is donation-based; the 200 THB is the Khao Phra Thaeo park gate fee, 2025–2026
Karon Viewpoint (Kata Viewpoint)
卡塔 · Nature and viewpoints · 0.5 小时
Free
Always open
Morning, with the sun behind you on the three bays
On the coast road between 小卡塔 and 奈汉; tour vans stop here around 10:00 and 15:00
The postcard of Phuket: a terrace above the coast road south of 卡塔 that looks north over 小卡塔, Kata Yai and 卡伦, three bays in a row with Koh Pu island in the middle. Free, with a sala, a few vendors and parking on the roadside. Every island tour stops here for ten minutes; a scooter rider can have it alone at 07:30. The road continues south past Nui Beach's access track to the Windmill Viewpoint and Promthep Cape, which makes the three viewpoints a natural half-day loop from 卡塔 or 奈汉.

Kathu Waterfall
芭东 · Nature and viewpoints · 1.5 小时
Free
Daylight
June–November, when water is running
A dry rock face from January to April
The nearest waterfall to 芭东, in the hills above Kathu ten minutes from the beach on the 普吉镇 road: a series of small cascades and pools reached by a paved path with steps, free to enter, with a few vendors at the bottom. It is worth the walk only in the green season; from January the flow is a trickle and the pools are shallow. Twenty minutes of steps to the upper tiers gives a real forest walk and a swim. Combine with the Kathu Mining Museum a few minutes away for the tin-mining story that built 普吉镇.

Khao Khad viewpoint tower (Cape Panwa)
攀瓦 · Nature and viewpoints · 0.5 小时
Free
Daylight
Late afternoon, on the way to Ao Yon or the aquarium
Free; a short climb up the tower
A four-storey concrete tower on the ridge of Cape Panwa with a 360-degree view: Chalong Bay and the Big Buddha to the west, the yacht marinas and Koh Lon to the south, 普吉镇 and Koh Sirey to the north, and on a clear day the limestone islands of Phang Nga Bay. Free, with parking at the base and a five-minute climb. Almost nobody goes, which is part of its charm; pair it with Ao Yon beach below and the Phuket Aquarium at the tip of the cape for a half-day on the island's quietest peninsula.

Khao Phra Thaeo forest: Bang Pae and Ton Sai waterfalls
邦涛 · Nature and viewpoints · 3 小时
08:00–17:00 daily
Green season, when the waterfalls run; by March they are a trickle
Leeches and mosquitoes after rain — long trousers and repellent
The last piece of primary rainforest on the island, a 22 km² protected area in the hills of Thalang with two waterfalls at its edges: Bang Pae on the east, ten minutes' walk from the car park and next to the gibbon project, and Ton Sai on the west. An eight-kilometre trail links the two through the forest; most people do one waterfall and a swim. Foreigners pay 200 THB at either gate. The falls are worth seeing from June to November; in the dry months they are pools rather than cascades. It is the one genuinely green half-day on Phuket and pairs with the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project at the Bang Pae entrance.

Khao Rang Viewpoint (Rang Hill)
Free
Always open
Dusk, when the town lights come on
Restaurants on the hill open in the evening; the park path is slippery after rain
The hill on the north-west edge of 普吉镇 with a park, a fitness track, macaques and a terrace over the whole town to Chalong Bay and the Big Buddha on its hill. Admission is free, parking is free, and it is open around the clock; the two long-standing restaurants on the slope (Tunk-Ka Café and Khao Rang Breeze) are where the town goes for a view with dinner. It takes ten minutes by car from the Old Town. Not a big attraction, but the right ending to a day in town, and a place where you meet Phuket people rather than tourists.

Monkey Hill (Khao To Sae)
Free
Daylight; the road is closed to cars in the early morning and evening for walkers
06:00–08:00, with the town's joggers
The macaques are habituated and will take food from bags — keep everything zipped
The hill above the north of 普吉镇 where several hundred macaques live along the road to the radio masts. The road is closed to traffic in the early morning and late afternoon and becomes the town's exercise track, which is when to walk it: two kilometres of steady climb, monkeys at every bend, a view from the top over the town and Koh Sirey. It costs nothing. The monkeys are used to people and will grab bags and bottles; do not feed them and keep children close. Ten minutes by car from the Old Town.

Phuket Elephant Sanctuary (Pa Khlok)
邦涛 · Nature and viewpoints · 3.5 小时
Morning programme 09:30–13:00; afternoon programme and canopy walk by booking
Morning programme, before the heat
Runs in rain — the elephants prefer it; bring a change of clothes
The first observation-only elephant sanctuary on the island, opened in 2016 on 30 acres bordering Khao Phra Thaeo forest with retired logging and trekking elephants. There is no riding, no bathing and — since April 2026 — no feeding: guests walk the forest paths and a canopy walkway and watch the herd forage and bathe. The half-day programme is 3,000 THB per adult with a vegetarian lunch; the shorter canopy-walkway visit is 1,900 THB. Pickups run from most resort areas. It is the honest end of the elephant-tourism spectrum, and the price reflects that the animals do not work for it.

Promthep Cape (Laem Phromthep)
奈汉 · Nature and viewpoints · 1 小时
Free
Always open; the lighthouse museum daytime only
Forty minutes before sunset; the car park fills from 17:30 in high season
Sunsets are clearest November–March; in the green season the horizon is often cloud
The southernmost tip of the island and the sunset viewpoint everyone is driven to: a headland with a small lighthouse, a shrine of elephant statues, a viewing terrace over Koh Kaew and the Andaman, and a steep path down the ridge for those who want the point itself. It is free, and it is busy — coaches arrive from every resort for sunset in high season. The alternative is the Windmill Viewpoint three minutes north, which faces the same sunset over 奈汉 with a fraction of the crowd. Ya Nui beach at the foot of the cape has snorkelling in calm months.

Sirinat National Park (奈扬)
奈扬 · Nature and viewpoints · 3 小时
08:00–16:30 daily
November–April for swimming; plane-spotting any time
季节: Turtle nesting on 迈考 roughly November–February; the beach is patrolled and lights are restricted
The national park that covers the north-west coast from 奈扬 to 迈考: casuarina-shaded beach, a mangrove boardwalk, a small visitor centre and the seaward end of the airport runway, where aircraft cross the beach at a few hundred feet. Foreigners pay 200 THB at the 奈扬 headquarters; the beach outside the park boundary is free. Its value is that it is undeveloped — no beach clubs, a handful of licensed vendors, campsite bungalows — and it is ten minutes from the airport, so it is the place to spend a last morning before a flight. Turtles nest on the 迈考 section in the cool months.

Windmill Viewpoint (奈汉)
奈汉 · Nature and viewpoints · 0.5 小时
Free
Always open
Sunset, or early morning for the kite-surfers off 奈汉 in the north-east season
Windy — that is why the turbine is there; hold on to hats
A wind turbine on the ridge between 奈汉 and Ya Nui with a platform looking down on both bays and, to the south, Promthep Cape. It is the local's sunset spot: free, with parking, a couple of drinks vendors and a fraction of the coaches that go to the cape itself. From here you can see the yachts at anchor in 奈汉 in the calm months and the surf lines rolling into the bay from May to October. Paragliders launch from the slope on the right days. A five-minute drive from 奈汉 beach, or a steep twenty-minute walk.
