The crossing: how long, from where, on which boat
Phi Phi lies about 45 km east-south-east of 查龙. A speedboat with two or three outboards makes the crossing in 45 to 60 minutes from Chalong Pier in the dry season; a motor yacht of 45 to 60 ft takes an hour to an hour and a quarter from 查龙 or Royal Phuket Marina; a power catamaran takes about ninety minutes with a steadier deck and a shaded saloon. From Ao Po in the north-east add twenty to thirty minutes, which is why the boats based there price Phi Phi as their long day and Phang Nga Bay as the short one.
The boats on this page leave from Ao Po Grand Marina, Boat Lagoon Marina, Royal Phuket Marina, Chalong Pier, CoCo Pier. Outside the rate on every boat: the Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi national-park fee, paid in cash per foreign adult on landing and collected by the crew or the ranger; alcohol beyond what the boat lists as free; and hours beyond the programme. Maya Bay has a seasonal closure each year and a no-swimming rule when open — the crew lands you on the boardwalk side; Pileh Lagoon, Loh Samah, Viking Cave and Monkey Beach are the rest of the Phi Phi Leh circuit, and Bamboo Island to the north is the lunch stop most private boats add.
Speedboat, catamaran or yacht for Phi Phi
A speedboat is the fastest and the cheapest whole-boat way to Phi Phi and the right answer for a group of six to twelve adults who want the maximum number of stops — Maya Bay, Pileh, Viking Cave, Monkey Beach, Bamboo — before the heat of the afternoon; it has no cabin and the least shade, and on a swell day it is the roughest ride. A power catamaran halves the motion, gives a bow net and a saloon, and is the family boat for the same route at a slower pace. A motor yacht is the choice when the day matters more than the count of stops: air conditioning for the crossing, a proper lunch under way and a swim platform at anchor in Pileh Lagoon.

November to April is the calm season on the Phi Phi crossing and the months when the lagoons are at their clearest; it is also the season in which the private speedboats are booked days ahead and the peak columns of the rate tables apply around Christmas and New Year. From May to October the crossing is exposed to the south-west swell: some mornings are fine, some are cancelled by the Harbour Department, and the sensible plan is to book the Phi Phi day early in the stay with a second date held, or to switch to Phang Nga Bay, which is sheltered all year.
