Коротко

An economy automatic in Phuket is $24 a day (about 790 THB at the rate on file) on a week-long rental with the desk's basic insurance (сентябрь 2026 г.). Add zero-excess cover for a few hundred baht a day, bring a home licence and an International Driving Permit, expect a deposit of 5,000–10,000 THB held on a card (September 2026), and photograph the car before you drive it. The island has no toll roads, drives on the left and asks for a child seat under six years or 135 cm. The full walk-through — insurance, airport versus local desks, parking by area — is in the guide below.

What a rental car costs in Phuket right now

The Phuket Travel Price Index records an economy automatic — the Yaris, City and Almera class that every desk on the island stocks — at $24 a day (about 790 THB at the rate on file), with quotes of $15–$61 across the 7 sources read, for a rental of a week priced per day, with the basic insurance the desk includes by default, in the сентябрь 2026 г. revision. That is the figure a visitor should carry in their head when a counter quotes something else: below the range usually means an older car, a manual gearbox or a "same-to-same" fuel rule; above it usually means the airport terminal, the peak fortnight, or full cover already built in. A single day costs more per day than a week, and a month less: the index measures the seven-day rate because that is what most visitors book.

The dollar figure is a conversion of baht prices at the exchange rate on file (32.98 THB per dollar, 3 сентября 2026 г.); the desk bills in baht, by card or cash, and the deposit is held in baht too. A scooter, for comparison, is $9 a day in the same revision — a car is roughly three times the price of two wheels and carries a family, luggage and a week of rain for it.

Airport counters versus local desks

There are two markets. The international brands and the large Thai chains sit on counters inside both terminals of Phuket International Airport: you walk out with a car, the paperwork is in English, the excess and the deposit are printed, and the rate runs a little above the island's median. The local desks — a hundred of them, in every resort town and along the airport road — quote lower, often waive the second-driver fee, and will deliver the car to a hotel or meet you at arrivals with a name board for a small fee; the trade-off is that insurance terms are a conversation rather than a document, so ask for the excess figure in writing before you sign. Both markets are legitimate; the difference is in what is included, not in whether the car exists.

Whichever you choose, the arrival-day question is worth thinking through: most visitors who land after dark, or who are staying in Патонг, Ката or Карон, are better off taking a transfer for the first night (the airport transfer hub prices every option by area) and collecting a car in town the next morning, when the hotel car park is known and the Kathu hill has been driven once as a passenger. Anyone staying north of the airport — Най Янг, Май Кхао, Най Тон — has an easy case for collecting at the terminal.

Documents: licence, permit, passport, card

A rental desk asks for a passport, a home driving licence and an International Driving Permit. Thailand recognises IDPs issued under both the 1949 Geneva and the 1968 Vienna conventions (it ratified the 1968 convention in 2020), and the permit has to be issued before you leave home — no country issues one abroad. A licence in Latin script from most Western countries is accepted at the counter without the IDP by many desks, but the police at a checkpoint and, more expensively, an insurer after an accident, expect the permit: a claim without it is a claim the insurer can refuse. A card with enough headroom for the deposit — 5,000–10,000 THB blocked, as of September 2026 — completes the set; the local desks often take a cash deposit instead. Rules as checked in September 2026; the long guide covers the case of a stay past 90 days, when the permit stops being valid and a Thai licence becomes the answer.

Insurance in three lines

Every registered car carries the compulsory Por Ror Bor policy, which pays for injuries to other people and little else. The desk's collision damage waiver covers the car with an excess — the amount you pay first, typically 5,000–20,000 THB in 2026 quotes — and zero-excess cover, sold as an add-on of a few hundred baht a day or bundled into a "no-deposit" tariff, removes it. Tyres, glass, the underside and driving on sand or off the tarmac are excluded by most policies whatever the label, and an accident reported without a police record is an accident the insurer did not see. Photograph every panel, the wheels, the windscreen and the fuel gauge at pick-up, on your own phone, with the time stamp on.

Driving on the island

Thailand drives on the left; the steering wheel is on the right; the indicator stalk is on the right too, which is why the first day is spent flashing the wipers. There are no toll roads on Phuket and no tolls on the causeway to the mainland. Speed limits are 50–80 km/h on the island's roads, with 90 km/h on the divided highway north of the airport; the police speed-camera vans are a routine sight on the bypass and the Sarasin bridge approach. The drink-drive limit is 50 mg per 100 ml of blood — 20 mg for a driver under 20 or one licensed for fewer than five years — and checkpoints on the way out of Патонг at midnight are ordinary. Scooters filter on both sides, overtake on the inside and pull out without looking; the defensive rule is to assume every bike is about to cross your path. Parking is the constraint in Патонг, Ката and the Old Town, where a paid car park or a hotel space is the answer, and no constraint anywhere north of Сурин.

Children, fuel and the return

Under Section 123 of the Land Traffic Act, a child under six years old, or shorter than 135 cm, must ride in a child seat — a rule in force since 2023 with a fine of up to 2,000 THB. Rental desks sell the seat as an add-on and some stock only one size, so it belongs on the booking, not on the pick-up conversation. Fuel is 37.01 THB a litre for gasohol 95 in the август 2026 г. monthly mean at Phuket pumps (38.29 THB in the PTT posting of 2 сентября 2026 г.); an economy car returns the airport-to-Раваи run on about four litres, and a week of island driving rarely costs more than a single tank. Return the car with the same fuel as at pick-up, in daylight if you can, and have the desk sign the same photographs you took on day one.

Частые вопросы

How much does it cost to rent a car in Phuket?

An economy automatic is $24 a day on a week-long rental with basic insurance in the сентябрь 2026 г. revision of the Phuket Travel Price Index ($15–$61 across 7 sources). Airport terminal counters and the peak fortnight sit at the top of the range; local desks in the green season at the bottom. Zero-excess cover adds a few hundred baht a day.

Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Phuket?

Yes for the police and the insurer, often no for the desk. Thailand recognises permits under the 1949 and 1968 conventions, issued in your home country before travel; a Latin-script licence gets you the keys at many counters, but a checkpoint fine and, more importantly, a refused insurance claim follow from driving without the permit. After 90 days in Thailand the permit is no longer valid and a Thai licence is required. Checked September 2026.

Is it better to rent at Phuket airport or in town?

The terminal counters cost a little more and give you a car the minute you land, with printed insurance terms; the local desks are cheaper, deliver to hotels and often waive the second driver. Anyone landing after dark or staying in Патонг, Ката or Карон usually does better with a transfer on night one and a car collected in town the next morning; anyone staying north of the airport collects at the terminal.

What deposit and excess should I expect?

As of September 2026, a deposit of 5,000–10,000 THB held on a card (or in cash at local desks) and a collision-damage excess of roughly 5,000–20,000 THB, reducible to zero with an add-on or a "no-deposit" tariff. Tyres, glass, the underside and off-road driving are excluded by most policies regardless of the label; an accident without a police report is usually not covered.

Are there toll roads in Phuket, and which side do they drive on?

No tolls anywhere on the island or on the Sarasin bridge to the mainland. Thailand drives on the left with the steering wheel on the right. Speed limits run 50–80 km/h on island roads and 90 km/h on the divided highway north of the airport; the drink-drive limit is 50 mg per 100 ml (20 mg for new or under-20 drivers). A child under six or under 135 cm must be in a child seat — a fine of up to 2,000 THB since 2023.
