May is the hinge of the Phuket year. The south-west monsoon arrives in the first half, the west-coast swell begins and the Similan park closes on the fifteenth. Rain in May is not the all-day grey many visitors imagine: it is an hour or two of hard afternoon downpour, often with a clear morning either side, and the mornings are exactly when the sea is at its calmest.
Prices fall further and faster than the weather worsens, which is what makes early May the value week the returnees book. The high-season supplements come off, villas that cost a fortune in January are affordable by the month, and restaurant tables and boat seats are freely available.
