What a hotel night costs on Phuket in September 2026
Across all 15 areas and every star class the median hotel room on Phuket costs $50 a night (n = 618, September 2026). By class the ladder runs $34 for a three-star room (n = 177), $62 for a four-star (n = 210) and $141 for a five-star (n = 87). The middle half of each class — the 25th to 75th percentile — is $25 – $51 for three stars, $41 – $134 for four and $71 – $219 for five, which says something important about the island: the four-star range is wide enough to overlap both its neighbours, because "four-star" on Phuket covers a city hotel with a pool and a beachfront resort that never asked for a fifth star.
The district matters more than the star. 15 of the 15 areas have a published four-star median, and it runs from $42 in 빠통 to $231 in 마이카오 — a ratio of 5.5 to 1 for the same class of hotel on the same island. Three-star rooms spread from $16 in 빠통 to $57 in 판와 (12 areas with a median); five-star from $62 in 찰롱 to $307 in 수린 (10 areas). The snapshot behind these numbers was taken in the low season, with the travel date in October 2026, so the medians are closer to the floor of the year than to its ceiling; the occupancy table further down shows how much the island fills up from November.
Best area to stay in Phuket, by budget and by purpose
On price alone, the cheapest areas for a four-star room are 빠통 ($42), 라와이 ($43), 나이양 ($45), 찰롱 ($45) and 까론 ($48). They share a pattern: each is a town with many hotels and competition between them — 빠통's resort strip, 라와이 and 찰롱's long-stay south, 나이양's airport village, 까론's mid-range beach road. The priciest are 마이카오 ($231), 라얀 ($169) and 수린 ($131), where the resort is the district and there is no town to undercut it.
Purpose changes the answer. The editorial area profiles tag each district with what it is best for, and matching those tags to the four-star medians gives a shortlist rather than a single winner. For families, cheapest first: 빠통 ($42), 라와이 ($43), 나이양 ($45) and 찰롱 ($45) — the cheapest four of 14 areas tagged for it. For nightlife: 빠통 ($42). For a quiet beach: 나이양 ($45), 까론 ($48), 푸켓타운 ($50) and 나이한 ($55) — the cheapest four of 10 areas tagged for it. For a luxury stay: 까말라 ($68), 방따오 ($81), 나이톤 ($93) and 판와 ($110) — the cheapest four of 7 areas tagged for it. On a tight budget: 빠통 ($42), 라와이 ($43), 나이양 ($45) and 찰롱 ($45) — the cheapest four of 7 areas tagged for it. For a long stay, where a monthly villa or apartment usually beats any hotel: 라와이 ($43), 찰롱 ($45), 까론 ($48) and 푸켓타운 ($50) — the cheapest four of 10 areas tagged for it. Each area page in this hub carries the full class table for the district, what the hotel stock looks like street by street, and the neighbours to compare it with.
Where five stars cost little more than four
10 areas have a published median in both the four-star and the five-star class, and the premium between them is anything but constant. The smallest gap is in 라얀, where the five-star median ($107) sits $62 below the four-star one ($169). The widest is in 까론: $244 against $48, a premium of 408%. In 라얀 and 마이카오 the five-star median is actually below the four-star one — not because five stars are cheap there, but because the four-star column in those districts is full of villas and residences sold by the night, and because the five-star samples are small.
The practical reading: where the gap is under about a third of the four-star price, it is worth opening the five-star listings in that district before booking a four-star; where it is more than double, the two classes are different products — a town hotel against a headland resort — and the choice is about the holiday, not the money. The table above lists every area with both medians and the size of the premium.
When Phuket hotels cost more
The index has one hotel price point per month from September 2026, so it cannot yet show its own seasonal curve; hotel occupancy from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Thailand can. Over the last twelve months on file the island's hotels were fullest in December 2025 at 84.1% against June 2026 at 61.7%. Averaged over the high-season months (November to April) occupancy ran at 80.6%, against 70% in the low-season months (May to October). Rooms are priced against that curve: the same hotel that quotes its floor rate in the low season adds a high-season supplement from November, a peak supplement over Christmas and New Year and, in many resorts, a compulsory gala dinner on the 24th and 31st of December. Months marked preliminary are the ministry's first release and are revised later.
As the index accumulates points — 1 point on file for the island-wide four-star series so far — the trend column of the table and the sparklines on each area page will show the month-to-month movement of the medians themselves, not just the occupancy that drives it. The observation month is printed next to every figure, so a number from the low season is never read as a high-season price.
How to read the medians
Every figure on these pages is the median of a fixed search: one night for two adults in one room, check-in thirty days after the snapshot, the cheapest available room of each property, in US dollars, before taxes and fees. The search is repeated for all 15 areas, results are merged, de-duplicated and assigned to an area by coordinates — the nearest area centre within its radius — so a hotel on the Kata–Karon border counts once, in one district, whatever the platform calls it. Star classes are the properties' own declared ratings; hostels, dormitories and one- and two-star properties stay in the raw dump but are not published as a class, which is why the "all classes" median can sit below the three-star one in a district with many guesthouses.
Low and high are the 25th and 75th percentiles of the sample, not the cheapest and dearest room found: every search returns a hostel bed and a pool villa, and quartiles describe what a traveller actually pays. A class with fewer than five hotels in an area publishes its sample size and no median — null is better than a guess — and those gaps are listed on each class page. The median is a level, not a fare tracker: prices on the platforms move daily, the index moves once a month, and the observation month is printed next to every number.
Class by class
The three-star class — the budget end of the published index — has an island median of $34 (n = 177) and is deepest in 빠통, 까론 and 푸켓타운 by price and in the resort towns by count; 라얀, 나이톤 and 마이카오 have too few three-star hotels for a figure. Four-star, at $62 (n = 210), is the widest class and the one most visitors book; every area has a published four-star median. Five-star, at $141 (n = 87), is concentrated on the west-coast headlands, the northern beaches and the 판와 cape; 까따, 나이톤, 나이한, 라와이 and 푸켓타운 have fewer than five five-star hotels in the sample and no median.
Each class has its own page with the full ranking of areas, the ranges, the areas below the minimum sample and a description of what the class actually buys on Phuket — because a four-star in 빠통 and a four-star in 라얀 are not the same product, and the ranges show it.
A month or longer: hotel or villa?
Hotel medians are per night; from about three weeks the arithmetic changes. The villas series of the same index prices entire homes by the month in the same 15 areas, after the platforms' long-stay discounts, and in the districts with a large villa market — 방따오, 라와이, 찰롱, 나이한 — a three-bedroom house for a month often costs less than thirty nights in the four-star column above. The villa figures live on the price-index pages and on each area page of this hub; the form at the bottom of this page goes to a Phuket agency that handles monthly rentals and replies the same day.
