How to read these numbers
Every figure on this page is the last reference rate of a month, quoted as Thai baht per one unit of the visitor's currency: 1 INR = 0.3484 THB means one Indian rupee bought 0.3484 baht at the close of 2026년 9월. A rising line means the currency buys more baht, so a hotel night, a villa month or a taxi priced in baht costs that visitor less; a falling line means the opposite. The month-end convention keeps the series comparable with the Phuket Travel Price Index, which is observed on fixed dates and published as monthly points.
Three official sources feed the series, and the attribution is printed next to every chart: the European Central Bank's euro reference rates (through the Frankfurter API) for the rupee, yuan, Australian dollar, pound, euro, ringgit and won; the Bank of Russia for the ruble; and the National Bank of Kazakhstan for the tenge. The ruble is quoted directly against the baht by the Bank of Russia only since 2023년 1월; earlier months are a cross rate through the US dollar, with both legs taken from the same month-end. These are reference rates, not the rate on a bureau-de-change board in 빠통 — expect a cash rate one to three percent worse, and ATM withdrawals to add a fixed Thai bank fee.
Since 2019: who gained, who lost
Measured against the 2019 average — the last full pre-pandemic year and the base year of the tourism statistics on this site — the British pound has held up best at +12.7%, and the Russian ruble has lost most at −20.7%. In order: GBP +12.7%, EUR +10.6%, AUD +10.2%, CNY +9.5%, MYR +9.0%, KRW −8.2%, KZT −10.8%, INR −20.7%, RUB −20.7%.
The practical reading for a visitor: a currency at +12.7% makes Phuket that much cheaper than in 2019 before Thai inflation is counted; a currency at −20.7% means the same baht price bill has grown by that share at home. The country pages combine this with the index medians, so a hotel night or a villa month is shown in the visitor's own currency at a dated rate.
The last twelve months
Over the last twelve months the Kazakhstani tenge (+22.6%), the Australian dollar (+10.6%), the Chinese yuan (+7.7%), the Malaysian ringgit (+5.6%), the South Korean won (+5.5%), the British pound (+2.1%) and the euro (+0.4%) gained against the baht, while the Russian ruble (−2.2%) and the Indian rupee (−4.6%) lost ground. Month-end rates carry noise: a single month can move a currency by a few percent without changing the multi-year picture, which is why the country pages show five years rather than one.

What a strong or weak baht means on the ground
Phuket prices are set in baht — hotels quote in baht even when a booking site displays dollars, villas are leased in baht, taxis and restaurants take baht. The exchange rate is therefore the first layer of a visitor's price of Phuket and the tourism statistics show its weight: markets whose currency weakens against the baht arrive in smaller numbers or for shorter stays, while a strong currency turns into longer stays and higher-category hotels. The Phuket Travel Price Index measures the second layer, the baht prices themselves, on fixed dates every month; the two together are what a visitor actually pays.
Two rules of thumb follow from the series. First, compare the rate with its own multi-year average rather than with last week: a currency that is 21% below its 2019 level will not be rescued by a good week. Second, the rate matters most for the long-stay budget — a villa month or a season — where a ten-percent move is the difference between one bedroom and two; for a week in a hotel it is a rounding error next to the season and the area. The monthly CSV below carries the full history for every currency so the comparison can be run for any dates.
자주 묻는 질문
Which currencies does this page track against the Thai baht?
9: Indian rupee (INR), Russian ruble (RUB), Chinese yuan (CNY), Australian dollar (AUD), British pound (GBP), Euro (EUR), Malaysian ringgit (MYR), South Korean won (KRW) and Kazakhstani tenge (KZT) — the currencies of the ten country hubs on this site (독일 and 프랑스 share the euro). Each series runs monthly from 2014년 1월 to 2026년 9월, quoted as baht per one unit, with the last reference rate of every month.
Which currency has lost the most against the baht since 2019?
The Russian ruble (RUB): −20.7% against its 2019 average as of 2026년 9월. The British pound (GBP) has held up best at +12.7%. The full ranking is in the table and in the text above.
Is Phuket cheaper for Indian visitors than in 2019?
Purely from the exchange rate, no: the rupee stands at −20.7% against its 2019 average (1 INR = 0.3484 THB on 2026-09-04), so the same baht price is 20.7% more expensive in rupees than in 2019. Thai prices themselves have moved as well; the Phuket Travel Price Index tracks those separately, and the 인도 page shows the index medians in rupees.
Where do the rates come from and how often are they updated?
From three central banks: the European Central Bank's euro reference rates through the Frankfurter API (INR, CNY, AUD, GBP, EUR, MYR, KRW, USD), the Bank of Russia (RUB; direct baht quote since 2023, cross rate via the US dollar before) and the National Bank of Kazakhstan (KZT). A script fetches them every Monday; the month's value is the last quote published in that month, so the current month changes until it closes and earlier months never change. Latest quote on this page: 2026-09-05.
Are these the rates I will get at an exchange booth in Phuket?
No — they are official reference rates, the middle of the market on the quote date. A bureau de change in 빠통 or at the airport typically pays 1–3% less for cash, ATMs add a fixed Thai bank fee per withdrawal, and card payments settle at the card network rate plus the issuer margin. Use these series for trends and budgets, and treat the booth rate as the reference rate minus a few percent.
Can I download the data?
Yes: /stats/currencies.csv is a monthly table with one column per currency (THB per 1 unit), 2014년 1월 to 2026년 9월, CC BY 4.0 for the compilation — credit phukettravels.com and the issuing central banks (ECB via Frankfurter; Bank of Russia; National Bank of Kazakhstan).
