Kalim Beach is 800 m of sand in Patong, open to the south-west monsoon, without lifeguards, reached by road free of charge. Best months to swim: November–March; rip-current risk from May to October: high. Good for surfing, sunset.
Kalim is where Patong bay ends: a narrow strip of sand and rock north of the town, with a flat reef exposed at low tide and a right-hand point break that works from May to October and gives the island its annual surf contest. It is not a swimming beach — the reef and the rocks see to that — and there are no loungers, no lifeguards and no facilities beyond the seafood restaurants and bars on the road above, which have the best sunset tables on the Patong side. In the calm months it is a place to walk at low tide, watch the paddle-boarders and eat; in the wet months it is a surf spot for people who already surf. Patong's sand starts five minutes' walk south.

It takes the south-west swell directly, so it follows the island's marine normals exactly: a calm sea in October–April and rough-sea days in May–September, when red flags fly on rough days and the rip-current risk is high. There are no lifeguards at any time, and no one is watching on a rough day. Caught in a rip: float, swim parallel to the beach until the pull stops, then in.
