Five ways out of the arrivals hall

Phuket International Airport sits on the north of the island, 4 km from Nai Yang and 45 km from Nai Harn, and every arrival faces the same choice at the same counters. The index prices five of them for each of the 15 areas: the official airport taxi and limousine counter (a fixed fare per car by destination zone, the 100 THB airport surcharge included), a ride-hailing car booked in the Grab or Bolt app from the airport pick-up zone, a private minivan pre-booked from a local operator with a driver waiting at the exit, a seat in the shared minibus that leaves when it is full, and the Phuket Smart Bus, a flat 100 THB per person down the west coast. Every figure on this page is a median of independent published sources with its sample size and the month it was read; where fewer than five sources priced a route the median is withheld and only the observed range is shown, because a guess is worse than a gap.

To Patong, the destination most arrivals name, the counter fare is $24 (range $15–$30, n = 16), a ride-hailing quote $23 (range $11–$38, n = 15) and a private minivan $44 (range $21–$79, n = 11) per vehicle in the septembre 2026 revision. A seat in the shared minibus to Patong is $7 (range $5–$8, n = 6), and the Smart Bus is $3 — the same 100 THB to every stop on its route. The taxi and limousine counters are inside the arrivals hall, after customs and before the doors; the fare is fixed by zone, printed on the board, paid at the counter, and you are walked to the car with a slip. The same 100 THB airport surcharge is already inside every counter fare — it is not added on top at the car. Anyone who approaches you before you reach a counter is selling a private car at a private price.

Ride-hailing cars cannot stop at the taxi rank: Grab and Bolt pick up from a designated ride-hailing zone outside the terminal, and the app shows the meeting point once you are inside the airport. Book when you are standing there with your bags rather than from the baggage belt, because the driver's waiting time is counted and cancellations cost you the queue. The quote in the app is upfront and per car; the index records non-surge quotes, and the same route is dearer after the late-evening banks of long-haul arrivals or in rain.

Pre-booked private minivans do not have a counter: the driver waits at the arrivals exit with a name board, which is the point of paying more — no queue, no negotiation, room for six with luggage. The shared minibus is sold at counters in the arrivals hall for Patong and the west-coast beaches; the seat price is per person and the vehicle leaves when it has enough passengers, typically after a wait of half an hour to an hour according to the sources the index reads, and then drops each passenger at their hotel in turn. The Phuket Smart Bus stop is outside the terminal, signed from arrivals; the fare is paid on board or with the bus card.

What each area costs, and why some cells show only a range

Among the areas with a published taxi median, the counter is cheapest to Surin ($18, n = 8) and dearest to Rawai ($29, n = 5). Ride-hailing is cheapest to Bang Tao at $13, and in 6 of the 6 areas where both a taxi and a ride-hailing median exist the app quote is below the counter fare. A private minivan runs from $29 per vehicle to Nai Yang to $52 to Rawai. Per-seat options exist only where the operators run them: the shared minibus is priced to Patong, and the Smart Bus to the 6 areas on its route.

The northern beaches — Mai Khao, Nai Yang, Nai Thon — are the shortest transfers on the island and the thinnest in the sample: the counter board prices them as one zone, only four public lists print that zone's fare, and ride-hailing quotes to them are rarely published because drivers wait at the airport and the ride is short. So their taxi cells show a range and no median. Layan, Chalong and Panwa have no dedicated line on the counter board that the sources agree on: Layan is priced inside the Bang Tao zone, Panwa from the Chalong zone, and Chalong itself is placed in three different zones by different guides, which is exactly the kind of disagreement the index refuses to average. Ride-hailing is priced by distance in the app, so it is never zoned — an area without its own published app quotes shows its nearest neighbour's range and no median, and the note on the area page says which neighbour.

The counter fare is the anchor. It is fixed by zone, per car, and includes the surcharge; none of the zone lists the index reads prints a separate night rate or a luggage fee for the counter, so this page does not claim one — if a driver adds either at the car, the slip from the counter is the price. A car that quotes a flat fare and will not run the meter, or a driver who stops at a tour office on the way, is charging a private rate; walk back to the counter or say no. Ride-hailing undercuts the counter to most areas in the daytime sample, but the app's dynamic pricing means the same route can cost more than the counter after 10 p.m. or in a downpour; when the quote looks wrong, the counter is the fixed alternative fifty metres away.

Group size decides the third option. A private minivan takes up to six with luggage, and in 6 of the 11 areas with a minivan median it costs less than two taxis or two ride-hailing cars, so a family of five or six pays less per head in the van and skips the queue. For a couple with two bags the van is the dearest option by a wide margin. The shared minibus and the Smart Bus are the budget floor for one or two people who land in daylight and are not in a hurry — the trade is a wait and a slow route with many stops.

Phuket Smart Bus : itinéraire, tarif et horaires

The Phuket Smart Bus runs from the airport down the west coast and stops at Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai, in that order, for a flat 100 THB per person regardless of distance — $3 at the index rate (n = 8 sources for the published fare, septembre 2026). It runs roughly hourly through the day, and the published duration to the southern end of the route is 1.5–2.5 h; Patong is well under that, Rawai the full run. It does not serve Bang Tao's beach road, Layan, the northern beaches, Chalong, Panwa or Phuket Town — the nearest stop for Bang Tao and Layan is on the main road in Cherngtalay, a short ride from the beach, and Nai Harn is a ten-minute ride from the Rawai terminus. The sources the index reads publish no night service; the board at the stop shows the last departure of the day, and a late arrival should plan for a car.

The bus is the cheapest way to arrive anywhere it stops and the slowest. It is the right choice for one or two people with a rucksack who land by day and have a hotel near the beach road; it is the wrong choice for a family with four suitcases, for anyone landing after dark, and for any area not on the list above.

How long the road takes

Distances are road kilometres from the area list; the minutes in the tables come from a stated model — 1.4 × the road distance at 40 km/h plus 10 minutes to leave the terminal, rounded to five — and are indicative, not measured. The model is deliberately conservative: it puts Patong at ≈ 1 h 15 min and Rawai at ≈ 1 h 40 min, which is what an arrival in daytime traffic should plan for, not what a night run takes. The single north–south highway, the coast road and the hill between Kathu and Patong are where a transfer stalls; the area guides on this site carry residents' own timings for each district, and the area pages here print both.

How this series is measured

The transfers series is measured by hand on the 1st and the 15th of each month from three kinds of open source: the counter zone lists and boards reproduced by transport guides, screenshot-based ride-hailing quotes from the airport pick-up zone, and the published one-way price lists of local minivan operators. One observation per independent source; a range from one source counts once, at its midpoint, with its ends feeding the low and high. Prices are quoted in baht and converted once at the reference rate written into every observation for that month; the dollar figures are never re-converted afterwards. The 50 area × option cells of the current revision rest on 329 source observations; 32 cells carry a median, 18 a range only.
