One of the three great Buddhist holy days, marking the spontaneous gathering of 1,250 disciples to hear the Buddha teach. The Thai new year, and the only national holiday that visitors experience as a three-day water fight. The traditional form is gentle — water poured over the hands of elders and over Buddha images, merit made at Wat Chalong and Wat Phra Thong — and the street form is not: Patong's Bangla Road and the Beach Road strip become a soaking free-for-all from midday until night, while Saphan Hin in Phuket Town runs the local, family version with stages and food stalls. Asalha Bucha marks the Buddha's first sermon; Khao Phansa, the following day, begins the three-month rains retreat during which monks stay in one temple.
