February is the month the climate normals like best: least rain, calm sea, days warm rather than hot and nights that are almost cool by Phuket standards. Nothing about the weather constrains a February itinerary, which is why it is the month for the things that need a still sea and a clear sky — Similan liveaboards, sailing, the long-tail hop to the Coral and Racha islands, sunrise at Big Buddha.
It is also the busiest month for Northeast Asian arrivals. Chinese New Year and, ten days or so later, Korean Seollal put two travel waves into the same fortnight, and Phuket Town keeps the lunar new year as its own festival rather than an imported one — shrine rites, a lantern-lit street fair on Thalang Road, and the Old Town Festival weekend with its Baba-Peranakan wedding somewhere in the same month.
