Phuket's beaches are almost all on the west coast, facing the Andaman, and the Andaman has two states. From October–April the north-east monsoon blows offshore, the sea is flat and clear, and every beach in this catalogue is a swimming beach. From May–September the south-west monsoon blows onshore, the marine reanalysis records a median of 13 rough-sea days in July (waves over the site's threshold, 4 years of data since the marine series began in 2022), and the open beaches turn into surf beaches with rip currents. The exposure column in this catalogue is the whole story in one word: 'open' beaches — माई खाओ, नाई यांग, नाई थोन, बांग ताओ, सुरिन, Laem Sing, कमला, Kalim, पटोंग, Freedom, कारोन, कता, Kata Noi, Nui, नाई हार्न — take the swell directly; 'partly sheltered' coves sit behind a headland that takes the edge off; 'sheltered' beaches — रावाई, Laem Ka, Ao Yon — face east or south-east with the island between them and the weather and swim all year. The rip-current label for May–October is derived from that exposure and the island's rough-sea normals, not typed per beach, which is why it is consistent and why it should be read as a rule, not a forecast.

The island runs 40.4 km of sand across the 25 beaches here, from Mai Khao Beach (11 km) to Ao Sane Beach (100 m). Lengths were measured along the sand on map imagery and rounded; they matter because the long beaches (माई खाओ, बांग ताओ, कारोन, पटोंग, नाई यांग) have room to walk away from the crowd and the short coves do not, and because a long open beach is where a rip has the most room to form.

Phuket records around 30–40 drownings a year, most of them between May and October and most of them foreign visitors who swam through a red flag; in 2025 at least fourteen foreign tourists had drowned by October. The mechanism is the rip current: water pushed onto the beach by the swell runs back out to sea through a gap in the sandbar as a narrow, fast channel that pulls a swimmer away from the shore in seconds and cannot be seen from the sand. Steep beaches — कारोन, सुरिन, माई खाओ — are the worst because the shore-break dumps close in and the channels are deep; long gentle beaches — कता, बांग ताओ, नाई यांग — are kinder but not safe. Red flag means no swimming. Yellow means caution. A rescue starts with not fighting the current: float, swim parallel to the beach, then in.

Lifeguards are a municipal service and cover 10 of the 25 beaches here — माई खाओ, बांग ताओ, सुरिन, कमला, पटोंग, कारोन, कता, Kata Noi, नाई हार्न, रावाई — in daylight hours, roughly 08:00 to 18:00, with the big resorts posting their own in front of their frontage on माई खाओ. कारोन's three kilometres are patrolled by just over twenty guards spaced along the beach. None of the small coves — Freedom, Paradise, Laem Sing, Banana, Nui, Ya Nui, Ao Sane, Laem Ka — has any, and none of the boat-only coves is reachable in the swell anyway. After dark there are no lifeguards anywhere. Jellyfish arrive after storms on the whole west coast; vinegar is the first aid and the beach-club staff, who are in the water daily, are the best source on the day.

What is on the sand: the 2016 and 2025 clean-ups

The facilities columns in this catalogue reflect two rounds of enforcement. In 2014–2016 the military government cleared the beach clubs, restaurants and lounger operators that had colonised the sand, then allowed licensed loungers back in zones covering a tenth of each beach. In 2025 the vendors, chairs and loungers that had crept back onto सुरिन were moved across the beach road, leaving it bare; late in 2025 Banana Beach went the other way, gaining a car park, a beach club and numbered sunbeds; and in 2026 the Royal Forest Department ordered the beach club at Nui Beach removed from protected forest and the minister stated that no one may charge entry there. So सुरिन has excellent swimming and no loungers, Banana has loungers and a parking fee, Nui is free and uncertain, and पटोंग, कता, कारोन and कमला have their licensed zones. The beach pages carry the detail and the date.

Entry fees are rare and small: 22 of the 25 beaches are free to walk onto. The exceptions are the privately accessed coves near पटोंग (Freedom's path, Paradise's day package), Banana's car park, and the Sirinat National Park section of नाई यांग and माई खाओ, where the 200 THB foreign-adult park fee applies inside the headquarters boundary and not on the village beach. Loungers, where they exist, are rented by the day from the licensed operators; a public beach in Thailand is public below the high-water mark and no hotel can close it.

Which beach, by what you want

For swimming in the high season: any of them, and the clearest water is at नाई हार्न, Kata Noi, नाई थोन and सुरिन. For children: नाई हार्न, कता, बांग ताओ, कमला, नाई यांग and लायन for the gentle gradients and facilities, Ao Yon and Laem Ka for calm water in the wet season. For snorkelling from the sand: Ya Nui, Ao Sane, Banana, नाई थोन's northern rocks, Freedom's headlands and Laem Sing. For surfing: Kata Yai first, then Kalim, कारोन's northern end, नाई हार्न and Kata Noi, from May to October only. For quiet: माई खाओ, the middle of बांग ताओ, लायन, नाई थोन, and any of the no-road coves early in the morning. For a beach with a town: पटोंग, कता, कारोन and कमला. For sunset: the whole west coast, but the Windmill Viewpoint above नाई हार्न and the beach clubs of बांग ताओ and कमला are where people go on purpose.

Two beaches are on the list for honesty rather than swimming: रावाई, which is a longtail shore and a seafood market and the departure point for the southern islands, and Kalim, which is a reef and a surf break. And two areas the site tracks have no beach at all — फुकेत टाउन and चालोंग — which is why their pages point here.

Sea by month, and how to read the tables

The sea-by-month table is island-wide: one marine reanalysis point off the west coast, median rough-sea days and median rainfall per calendar month over 2015–2025 (marine fields from 2022), and median sea-surface temperature from 2022-12 to 2026-08. The sea is warm in every month — 28.8 °C in January to 31.0 °C in May — so temperature never decides a swim on Phuket; the sea state does. A sheltered beach is calmer than the island figure in every month; an open beach is exactly the island figure. Each beach page applies that rule month by month. The best-months column is the beach's own calm season: November to April on the open west coast, all year on the sheltered east and south-east coves, October added where a headland calms the tail of the monsoon.

Nothing on this page is measured by us on the beach. Lengths are map measurements, lifeguard coverage is the municipal service as reported by the local press in 2025, facilities are as reported after the clean-ups, and the sea data is reanalysis. Where a source is uncertain — the Paradise Beach fee, the Laem Ka gate, Nui's structures — the catalogue says so rather than picking a number. The hotels, villa rents and airport transfer for the area behind each beach are on the area pages, priced from the index.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

Which is the best beach in Phuket?

There is no single answer, and this catalogue does not rank. For clear-water swimming in the high season the residents' answers are नाई हार्न, Kata Noi, नाई थोन and सुरिन; for families कता, बांग ताओ, नाई हार्न and नाई यांग; for quiet, माई खाओ and लायन; for a beach with a town behind it, पटोंग, कता and कारोन. The table above compares all 25 on length, lifeguards, rip risk, access, fee and best months, with the sources on each beach page.

When is the sea in Phuket calm enough to swim?

From October–April on every beach. The marine normals put rough-sea days in May–September, peaking in July (13 rough days, median), when the open west-coast beaches fly red flags on rough days. The 3 sheltered beaches — रावाई, Laem Ka, Ao Yon — face away from the south-west monsoon and are swimmable all year; the partly sheltered coves are a judgement on the day.

Which Phuket beaches have lifeguards?

10 of the 25: माई खाओ, बांग ताओ, सुरिन, कमला, पटोंग, कारोन, कता, Kata Noi, नाई हार्न, रावाई, in daylight hours (about 08:00–18:00), per the municipal Phuket Lifeguard Service as reported in 2025; the माई खाओ resorts post their own. None of the small or boat-only coves has any, and there are no lifeguards anywhere after dark. In an emergency call 1669.

What do the red flags on Phuket beaches mean?

Red means the sea is closed to swimming because of rip currents or surf; yellow means caution. Phuket records around 30–40 drownings a year, most between May and October and most involving visitors who swam past a red flag. Caught in a rip: do not swim against it — float, swim parallel to the beach until the pull stops, then in. The steep beaches (कारोन, सुरिन, माई खाओ) are the most dangerous because the shore-break dumps close in.

Which beaches in Phuket are swimmable in the rainy season?

The ones that face away from the south-west monsoon: रावाई, Laem Ka, Ao Yon — Ao Yon on the पानवा cape is the standby, calm and shallow with restaurants; Laem Ka near रावाई is a cove through private land; रावाई itself is calm but a boat shore, not a swim. लायन, at the sheltered northern end of बांग ताओ, is often swimmable when सुरिन and कता are flagged, without a lifeguard post. Everything else is a red-flag question on the day.

Which Phuket beaches are free, and which charge?

22 of 25 are free to walk onto. Freedom Beach charges 100–200 THB on its private path (or a longtail per boat), Paradise Beach sells a day package of about 200 THB (its policy changed in 2025), Banana Beach's new car park costs about 100 THB, and the Sirinat National Park headquarters section of नाई यांग charges the 200 THB foreign park fee — the village beach does not. Loungers are rented by the day everywhere they exist. Nui Beach's former entrance fee was ruled unlawful in 2026.

How warm is the sea in Phuket?

Between 28.8 °C (January) and 31.0 °C (May) as monthly medians from Open-Meteo Marine API data, 2022-12 to 2026-08 — warm enough to swim in every month. The sea state, not the temperature, decides whether a beach is swimmable; Nai Harn Beach, for example, is a clear calm bay in February and a surf beach in August.
