Baan Chinpracha (Chinpracha House)

Roughly 09:00–16:30 daily; the family lives upstairs and hours vary

Morning

The only Sino-colonial mansion in Phuket open to the public: built in 1903 by a tin-mining family on Krabi Road and still lived in by their descendants, who open the ground floor — Italian floor tiles, a rain courtyard, Chinese furniture, family photographs — for a small fee, about 150 THB when last reported. It is a forty-minute visit, and worth it precisely because nothing has been museum-ified; the house has featured in several films, including the Oliver Stone drama Heaven and Earth. Next door, Blue Elephant restaurant occupies a grander mansion of the same family and era.

Big Buddha (Phra Phutta Ming Mongkol Akenakiri)

Free

09:00–18:00 daily, last entry 17:30

Early morning or the hour before sunset; clouds sit on the hill by midday in the green season

A 45-metre white-marble Buddha on Nakkerd Hill between चालोंग and कता, visible from half the south of the island. Entry is free; the road up from चालोंग is six kilometres of switchbacks with a viewpoint over Chalong Bay, कता and कारोन from the platform. Shoulders and knees must be covered — sarongs are lent at the gate. The site closed after a landslide in August 2024 and reopened on 3 March 2026, so guides written in between are wrong about access. Combine it with Wat Chalong at the bottom of the hill; both are on the standard half-day 'Phuket city' tour, but a taxi or scooter does the pair in three hours.

Phuket Mining Museum (Kathu)

09:00–16:00, closed Mondays when last checked

Any time; indoor

A purpose-built Sino-Portuguese-style museum in Kathu, ten minutes inland from पटोंग, that tells the tin-mining story of the island: the dredges and gravel pumps, the Hokkien immigrants who worked and then owned the mines, the opium dens, the coolie barracks, and the fortunes that built the Old Town. Dioramas, an English audio track and a shaded courtyard; about an hour. Admission is nominal (around 100 THB). It is rarely visited, which is a shame, because nothing else explains why Phuket's history is Chinese rather than Thai as clearly.

Phuket Old Town (Thalang, Dibuk and Soi Romanee)

Free

Always open; cafés and shops roughly 09:00–21:00

Late afternoon into the evening, when the shophouse façades are lit and the heat is off

The Sino-Portuguese quarter built on tin money between the 1880s and the 1930s: pastel shophouses on Thalang and Dibuk roads, the photographed curve of Soi Romanee, Chinese shrines, the Standard Chartered building and the mansions on Krabi Road. Walking it costs nothing; the museums and the mansion charge separately. It is the island's food centre — Hokkien noodles, dim sum breakfasts, roti and the coffee shops that started the third-wave scene on Phuket — and the only part of the island where a rainy afternoon is a pleasure rather than a problem. The Sunday walking street closes Thalang Road to traffic.

Phuket Thai Hua Museum

09:00–17:00, closed Mondays

Any time; air-conditioned

The former Chinese-language school on Krabi Road, opened in 1934 and turned into a museum of the Hokkien community that built the town: tin mining, the shophouse trades, the Vegetarian Festival, the families whose names are still on the streets. It is a compact, well-labelled hour in a restored Sino-Portuguese building with a courtyard, and the best single explanation of why फुकेत टाउन looks the way it does. Foreigners pay 200 THB (Thais 50 THB) and a separate photo permit is sold. Closed Mondays. Combine with Baan Chinpracha, the mansion two streets away, for the domestic side of the same story.

Phuket Vegetarian Festival (October)

Free

Nine days from the first day of the ninth lunar month — usually late September or October

The street processions from the Chinese shrines through the Old Town, early morning

Nine days of Taoist devotion in the ninth lunar month, when the Chinese shrines of फुकेत टाउन — Jui Tui, Bang Neow, Kathu — hold processions of entranced mediums who pierce their cheeks with skewers and walk on coals, firecrackers are thrown by the case, and the whole island eats vegetarian from yellow-flagged stalls. It is loud, bloody in places, and the most extraordinary thing that happens on Phuket each year; it costs nothing to watch. Not for small children near the processions. Dates follow the lunar calendar and usually fall in October, which is also the wettest month.

Thalang National Museum

09:00–16:00, closed on public holidays

Any time

The state museum of the island's history, just east of the Heroines Monument roundabout on the road to the airport: prehistoric finds, the tin-mining era, the 1785 Burmese siege that the two heroines on the roundabout commemorate, and the sea-gypsy communities. It is modest and quiet and the labelling is in English, which makes it the best hour of context for anyone staying on the northern beaches. Foreigner admission is quoted at 100 or 200 THB depending on the source; either is small. Closed on public holidays rather than a fixed weekday.

Wat Chalong

Free

07:00–17:00 daily

Before 10:00, ahead of the tour buses

Phuket's largest and most visited Buddhist temple, on the main road through चालोंग. The three-storey chedi holds a relic of the Buddha and gives a view over the temple grounds from its top floor; the older hall commemorates the monks Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang, credited with treating the wounded in the 1876 tin-miners' rebellion. Entry is free, the dress code is the usual covered shoulders and knees, and the grounds are largely under roof, which makes it a workable stop in rain. It sits at the foot of the Big Buddha road, so the two are almost always done together.

Gibbon Rehabilitation Project

09:00–16:00 daily; closed Thursdays when last checked

Morning, when the gibbons call

A volunteer-run centre at the Bang Pae entrance to Khao Phra Thaeo that has been taking in white-handed gibbons rescued from the photo-prop trade since 1992 and releasing family groups back into the forest. Visitors see the animals in the quarantine and rehabilitation enclosures from a distance — there is no handling, which is the point — and volunteers explain the programme. Entry to the project is by donation; the park gate charges foreigners 200 THB. The only ethical primate experience on the island, and a useful one to see before deciding what to do about the animal shows advertised on every tour board.

Karon Viewpoint (Kata Viewpoint)

Free

Always open

Morning, with the sun behind you on the three bays

The postcard of Phuket: a terrace above the coast road south of कता that looks north over Kata Noi, Kata Yai and कारोन, three bays in a row with Koh Pu island in the middle. Free, with a sala, a few vendors and parking on the roadside. Every island tour stops here for ten minutes; a scooter rider can have it alone at 07:30. The road continues south past Nui Beach's access track to the Windmill Viewpoint and Promthep Cape, which makes the three viewpoints a natural half-day loop from कता or नाई हार्न.

Kathu Waterfall

Free

Daylight

June–November, when water is running

The nearest waterfall to पटोंग, in the hills above Kathu ten minutes from the beach on the फुकेत टाउन road: a series of small cascades and pools reached by a paved path with steps, free to enter, with a few vendors at the bottom. It is worth the walk only in the green season; from January the flow is a trickle and the pools are shallow. Twenty minutes of steps to the upper tiers gives a real forest walk and a swim. Combine with the Kathu Mining Museum a few minutes away for the tin-mining story that built फुकेत टाउन.

Khao Khad viewpoint tower (Cape Panwa)

Free

Daylight

Late afternoon, on the way to Ao Yon or the aquarium

A four-storey concrete tower on the ridge of Cape Panwa with a 360-degree view: Chalong Bay and the Big Buddha to the west, the yacht marinas and Koh Lon to the south, फुकेत टाउन and Koh Sirey to the north, and on a clear day the limestone islands of Phang Nga Bay. Free, with parking at the base and a five-minute climb. Almost nobody goes, which is part of its charm; pair it with Ao Yon beach below and the Phuket Aquarium at the tip of the cape for a half-day on the island's quietest peninsula.

Khao Phra Thaeo forest: Bang Pae and Ton Sai waterfalls

08:00–17:00 daily

Green season, when the waterfalls run; by March they are a trickle

The last piece of primary rainforest on the island, a 22 km² protected area in the hills of Thalang with two waterfalls at its edges: Bang Pae on the east, ten minutes' walk from the car park and next to the gibbon project, and Ton Sai on the west. An eight-kilometre trail links the two through the forest; most people do one waterfall and a swim. Foreigners pay 200 THB at either gate. The falls are worth seeing from June to November; in the dry months they are pools rather than cascades. It is the one genuinely green half-day on Phuket and pairs with the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project at the Bang Pae entrance.

Khao Rang Viewpoint (Rang Hill)

Free

Always open

Dusk, when the town lights come on

The hill on the north-west edge of फुकेत टाउन with a park, a fitness track, macaques and a terrace over the whole town to Chalong Bay and the Big Buddha on its hill. Admission is free, parking is free, and it is open around the clock; the two long-standing restaurants on the slope (Tunk-Ka Café and Khao Rang Breeze) are where the town goes for a view with dinner. It takes ten minutes by car from the Old Town. Not a big attraction, but the right ending to a day in town, and a place where you meet Phuket people rather than tourists.

Monkey Hill (Khao To Sae)

Free

Daylight; the road is closed to cars in the early morning and evening for walkers

06:00–08:00, with the town's joggers

The hill above the north of फुकेत टाउन where several hundred macaques live along the road to the radio masts. The road is closed to traffic in the early morning and late afternoon and becomes the town's exercise track, which is when to walk it: two kilometres of steady climb, monkeys at every bend, a view from the top over the town and Koh Sirey. It costs nothing. The monkeys are used to people and will grab bags and bottles; do not feed them and keep children close. Ten minutes by car from the Old Town.

Phuket Elephant Sanctuary (Pa Khlok)

Morning programme 09:30–13:00; afternoon programme and canopy walk by booking

Morning programme, before the heat

The first observation-only elephant sanctuary on the island, opened in 2016 on 30 acres bordering Khao Phra Thaeo forest with retired logging and trekking elephants. There is no riding, no bathing and — since April 2026 — no feeding: guests walk the forest paths and a canopy walkway and watch the herd forage and bathe. The half-day programme is 3,000 THB per adult with a vegetarian lunch; the shorter canopy-walkway visit is 1,900 THB. Pickups run from most resort areas. It is the honest end of the elephant-tourism spectrum, and the price reflects that the animals do not work for it.

Promthep Cape (Laem Phromthep)

Free

Always open; the lighthouse museum daytime only

Forty minutes before sunset; the car park fills from 17:30 in high season

The southernmost tip of the island and the sunset viewpoint everyone is driven to: a headland with a small lighthouse, a shrine of elephant statues, a viewing terrace over Koh Kaew and the Andaman, and a steep path down the ridge for those who want the point itself. It is free, and it is busy — coaches arrive from every resort for sunset in high season. The alternative is the Windmill Viewpoint three minutes north, which faces the same sunset over नाई हार्न with a fraction of the crowd. Ya Nui beach at the foot of the cape has snorkelling in calm months.

Sirinat National Park (नाई यांग)

08:00–16:30 daily

November–April for swimming; plane-spotting any time

The national park that covers the north-west coast from नाई यांग to माई खाओ: casuarina-shaded beach, a mangrove boardwalk, a small visitor centre and the seaward end of the airport runway, where aircraft cross the beach at a few hundred feet. Foreigners pay 200 THB at the नाई यांग headquarters; the beach outside the park boundary is free. Its value is that it is undeveloped — no beach clubs, a handful of licensed vendors, campsite bungalows — and it is ten minutes from the airport, so it is the place to spend a last morning before a flight. Turtles nest on the माई खाओ section in the cool months.

Windmill Viewpoint (नाई हार्न)

Free

Always open

Sunset, or early morning for the kite-surfers off नाई हार्न in the north-east season

A wind turbine on the ridge between नाई हार्न and Ya Nui with a platform looking down on both bays and, to the south, Promthep Cape. It is the local's sunset spot: free, with parking, a couple of drinks vendors and a fraction of the coaches that go to the cape itself. From here you can see the yachts at anchor in नाई हार्न in the calm months and the surf lines rolling into the bay from May to October. Paragliders launch from the slope on the right days. A five-minute drive from नाई हार्न beach, or a steep twenty-minute walk.

Island trips from Phuket

Coral Island (Koh Hae) by longtail from रावाई

समय: Longtails from रावाई from about 08:00; last boats back by 17:00

November–April; the crossing is short and the island's Long Beach faces away from the worst swell

The island 9 km off रावाई with a long beach, a shallow reef for snorkelling from the sand, a couple of resorts and a banana-boat-and-parasail strip that gets busy with speedboat tours by 11:00. The independent way is a longtail chartered at रावाई pier — about 1,800–2,500 THB for the boat there and back, split between however many you are — which lets you leave at eight and have the beach before the tours arrive. The packaged speedboat version, with lunch and snorkel gear, is tracked in the tours index as the 'coral island' segment and shown as a median. The best half-day island for children.

Koh Yao Noi day trip by ferry

Speedboat ferries from Bang Rong pier roughly hourly 07:30–17:00

Year-round; the island sits in the sheltered bay

The quiet Muslim fishing island in the middle of Phang Nga Bay, half an hour by public speedboat from Bang Rong pier on Phuket's east coast: rubber plantations, rice paddies, a ring road you can cycle in a morning, a few beaches facing the limestone islands and a handful of resorts from homestays to Six Senses. Public ferry fares are low and change; no fare is shown here rather than an out-of-date one. It is the opposite of a packaged island trip — you go on your own, rent a scooter or bicycle at the pier, and come back on the last boat. The bay is sheltered, so it works in the green season.

Phang Nga Bay and James Bond island

Departures from Ao Po or Bang Rong pier about 08:00–09:00; back by 16:00–17:00

Runs year-round — the bay is sheltered; mornings are clearest

The limestone bay north-east of the island: Khao Phing Kan (James Bond island since 1974), the stilt village of Koh Panyee, sea-caves and hongs paddled by canoe, and lunch on the boat. Trips go by longtail, speedboat or the slower and more comfortable 'big boat', and because the bay faces away from the south-west monsoon it is the day trip that still runs when the Phi Phi and Similan boats are cancelled. The price here is the index median for the segment, measured monthly across operators; the canoe-only version by John Gray's is listed separately. Half the day is the bay itself, which is the point.

Phi Phi islands day trip

समय: Speedboats leave चालोंग or Rassada pier about 08:00–09:00, back by 17:00

November–April; Maya Bay closes to visitors every August–September

The classic day out: 45 km east across the strait by speedboat to Phi Phi Leh's Maya Bay and Pileh lagoon, then Phi Phi Don for lunch, snorkelling at Bamboo or Khai island on the way back. It is crowded — the national park caps Maya Bay's visitors and closes it for two months each year — and in the green season the crossing is the roughest of the island trips. The tours index on this site tracks what operators charge per person for this trip each month, so the price shown here is the index median rather than a single listing. The ferry from Rassada pier is the slower, cheaper, calmer way over.

Similan Islands day trip

Park open 15 October – 15 May, 08:00–16:00; boats leave from Khao Lak with pickups from Phuket before 06:00

November–March; the park closes for the monsoon from 16 May to 14 October

The nine granite islands 70 km north-west of Phuket in the Andaman, a national park with the clearest water in Thailand and the snorkelling and diving the country is known for. Day trips are long — a pickup from Phuket before dawn, a speedboat from Khao Lak, two or three stops and back after dark — and the park is open only from 15 October to 15 May. The 500 THB per-adult park fee is paid on top of the tour; the tour price itself is tracked in the tours index and shown as a median. Liveaboards of two to six nights are the serious diver's way to do it.

Things to do in Phuket with kids

Andamanda Phuket water park

10:00–18:00 daily

Weekday mornings; weekends bring Phuket families

The island's big water park, opened in 2022 on the bypass road between फुकेत टाउन and Kathu: five themed zones, a wave pool, a lazy river, a surf simulator and the drop slides on the Naga tower. Gate prices are 1,800 THB for adults (122 cm and over) and 1,200 THB for children, with online bundles a few hundred baht cheaper. It is a full day, and the sensible answer to the question of what to do with children when the west-coast beaches are red-flagged. Lockers, towels and food are extra. Central Phuket's malls are five minutes away for the evening.

Aquaria Phuket (Central Phuket Floresta)

10:30–19:00 daily

Any time; air-conditioned

A large commercial aquarium in the basement of the Central Phuket Floresta mall: 25,000 animals in a series of themed halls, an underwater tunnel with sharks and rays, otters, penguins and a jellyfish gallery, plus the AR Trickeye museum sold as a combo. It is the most expensive of the three aquarium-type attractions on the island and by some distance the most polished. Resellers sell adult tickets from about 600 THB; the gate rate is higher and changes with promotions. It is in a mall with cinemas, food halls and taxis at the door, which is why it is the default rainy-day plan for families anywhere on the island.

Blue Tree Phuket (Cherngtalay)

Free

Complex open daily, roughly 10:00–22:00; venues vary

Evenings for the restaurants and events

A leisure complex on the Cherngtalay–Thalang road behind बांग ताओ that opened in 2019 around a 17,000 m² swimming lagoon with slides and ziplines. The lagoon closed in August 2024 and the site now operates as a free-entry community hub: restaurants, a sports hall, an ice rink, fitness studios, a children's play area, markets and events, each charging its own way. Entry to the grounds costs nothing. It is useful to families staying in बांग ताओ and Laguna as a wet-afternoon fallback and an evening out; anyone arriving for the water park will be disappointed.

Carnival Magic (कमला)

Monday, Wednesday and Saturday 17:30–23:30; main show 20:30

Arrive at opening for the parade and lights before the show

The illuminated theme park next to Phuket FantaSea in कमला, opened in 2022 by the same company: a carnival-style kingdom of light installations, a river parade, food streets and a 8:30 pm stage show. Tickets start at 2,000 THB for entry with a standard seat, plus 400 THB for the buffet dinner or 750 THB for dinner and hotel transfer. Open three evenings a week — Monday, Wednesday, Saturday — so it needs planning. It is loud, bright and unashamedly for children and photographs; the older FantaSea show is the more theatrical evening.

Phuket Aquarium (Cape Panwa)

08:30–16:30 daily, ticket office closes 16:00

11:00 for the feeding and diving show

The public aquarium run by the Phuket Marine Biological Centre at the tip of Cape Panwa: a walk-through tunnel, reef and mangrove tanks, a turtle rehabilitation pool and a research-station honesty about what lives in the Andaman. Foreigners pay 300 THB (children 150, under 108 cm free); Thais pay less. It is small — an hour and a half — and it has none of the theatre of Aquaria in the Central mall, but it is cheaper, it is by the sea, and the cape drive past Khao Khad viewpoint and Ao Yon bay makes it a half-day. Feeding show at 11:00.

The island's long-running cultural theme park in कमला: a walk-through 'Carnival Village' of shops and games, a 4,000-seat buffet hall and the 70-minute 'Fantasy of a Kingdom' stage show with a cast of about 150 and a troupe of elephants. Show-only tickets are 1,800 THB and show with dinner 2,200 THB per adult, with transfers extra. It is polished, and it is a Las Vegas idea of Thailand — the elephants on stage are the reason some visitors give it a miss. Closed on Thursdays. Fully covered, so it is a rainy-evening plan for the west coast.

Day yacht charter from Ao Po Grand Marina or Yacht Haven

Day charters typically 09:00–17:00; sunset charters from 15:00

November–April; Phang Nga Bay is sheltered enough for most green-season days too

The two big marinas on the north-east coast — Ao Po Grand Marina and Yacht Haven at the top of the island — are where the sailing catamarans and motor yachts for Phang Nga Bay day charters are based: the limestone islands, Koh Hong's lagoon, James Bond island by lunchtime, a swim off Koh Yao, back for sunset. Day rates depend on the boat, the crew and the season and are quoted per vessel (often in dollars by the charter platforms), so no single figure is shown; an eight-person catamaran for a day is a serious four-figure dollar decision, split eight ways a different one. The east coast is sheltered from the south-west monsoon, which is why these charters run in months when the west-coast speedboats are cancelled.

Diving at Racha Yai and Racha Noi

समय: Boats leave चालोंग pier around 08:00, back by 16:00–17:00

November–April for visibility; Racha runs year-round because it is sheltered enough

The two Racha islands 20 km south of चालोंग are Phuket's home dive sites — sandy bays, hard-coral slopes, 15–30 m visibility in the cool months and enough shelter to dive most days of the wet season. A two-dive day trip from चालोंग includes the boat, lunch and a dive guide; Racha Yai is the beginners' and try-dive site, Racha Noi the deeper one with a chance of mantas from January to April. Operators price in baht per trip and quotes change with the season and the equipment rented, so no single price is shown here; the island tours index tracks the snorkelling-trip market separately. Divers with joint pain after a dive go to the hyperbaric chamber, not the nearest hospital — see the hospitals catalogue.

November–March; the July 2026 promotion shows how far green-season rates fall

The island's best-known course, ten minutes from the airport: the Canyon Course, cut through old tin-mine lakes and rubber plantations, hosted the Johnnie Walker Classic in 1994, 1998 and 2007, and the Lakes Course is the gentler sister. Rates swing with the season more than anywhere else on the island — the club's own July 2026 promotion sold the Canyon Course for 2,800 THB including caddie, cart and a food voucher, with twilight rounds at 1,950 THB, while high-season agent quotes run 3,500–5,500 THB. It is the course to play if you play one. Stay in नाई यांग or माई खाओ and it is on the doorstep.

Tee times from about 06:30; twilight rates after 14:00–15:00

November–April; book early morning in the hot months

The 18-hole parkland course in the middle of the Laguna resort complex at बांग ताओ, redesigned in 2015 with lagoons and the बांग ताओ hills as backdrop, and the one course on the island you can walk to from a hotel. Green fees are quoted at roughly 3,500–5,000 THB depending on season and agent, plus a caddie fee of around 700 THB and an optional cart; caddies are compulsory in Thailand and tipped. It is the flattest and friendliest of the three main courses. Blue Canyon and Red Mountain, both about thirty minutes east, are the championship tests.

Golf: Red Mountain Golf Club

The dramatic one: an 18-hole course built in 2007 in a former tin mine in the Kathu hills between पटोंग and फुकेत टाउन, with red-earth cliffs, big elevation changes and the 17th hole played from a ledge down to a green far below. It is cart-only and the nearest championship course to the west-coast resorts — fifteen minutes from पटोंग. Green fees run from about 4,500 THB to 6,000 THB depending on season and agent, caddie extra. Loch Palm, the sister course next door, is the easier and cheaper round on the same site.

First session of the morning, before rain builds

The largest zipline park on the island, in the hills above चालोंग on the road to Kathu: up to 32 platforms of ziplines, a roller zipline, a skywalk through the canopy and a luge, sold as packages from a bare 18-platform course at 2,200 THB to the full World A+ at 3,490 THB, with a buffet lunch in the bigger packages. A free shared shuttle collects from most resort zones. Children from about four can ride tandem with an instructor. Three hours all in; it is the outdoor family morning that works when the sea is rough, as long as there is no lightning.

Kitesurfing at नाई यांग and रावाई

Daytime, wind-dependent; schools open in their season only

सबसे अच्छा समय: नाई यांग May–September (south-west wind); रावाई and Nai Harn November–April (north-east wind)

Phuket has kite wind in both monsoons, on opposite sides of the island: the south-west wind blows onto नाई यांग beach near the airport from about May to September, and the north-east wind onto the shallow lagoon off रावाई and नाई हार्न from November to April. Schools such as Kiteboarding Asia move with the season. A two-to-three-hour introductory session with equipment runs about 3,000–4,000 THB; a full IKO Level 1 course over ten hours around 15,000 THB. रावाई's flat, waist-deep water is the easier learning ground; नाई यांग has waves. Both are far from the tourist strips, which is part of the appeal.

Muay Thai drop-in class (Tiger Muay Thai,

Classes from 07:30 to about 19:00, Monday–Saturday

The early-morning class, before the heat

Soi Ta-iad in Chalong is the island's fitness street — a kilometre of Muay Thai camps, MMA gyms, CrossFit boxes and protein cafés — and Tiger Muay Thai is the largest of them. Anyone can buy a drop-in pass at the desk, about 500 THB a class or 4,500 THB for ten, and join a beginners' Muay Thai session: pad work, technique, a lot of sweat. No booking, gloves lent. The neighbouring camps (Phuket Top Team, Dragon and others) price similarly. It is the cheapest genuinely Thai activity on this list and the one most visitors remember; the fight nights in Patong are the spectator version.

Sea-kayaking Phang Nga Bay: John Gray's 'Hong by Starlight'

Afternoon into night, roughly 12:00 pickup to 22:00 return

A moonless night for the bioluminescence; runs year-round

The original Phang Nga Bay sea-canoe trip, run since the 1980s by the American who first paddled into the bay's tidal caves: an afternoon boat out from the east coast, inflatable canoes paddled by guides through the low sea-caves into the hongs — open-roofed lagoons inside the limestone islands — dinner on the boat, a floating krathong, and a paddle back into a cave in the dark to see the bioluminescent plankton. 3,350 THB per person with transfers and dinner. It is not cheap next to the James Bond island speedboats in the tours index, and it is a different trip: quiet, guided, and the one people rank first afterwards.

Surf House Phuket (flowrider),

Hourly sessions 12:00–20:00 daily

Late afternoon, then stay for the bar

An artificial standing wave on the कता beach road (with a second one in पटोंग): a sheet of fast water over a padded slope where you ride a bodyboard or a flowboard, fall off, and go again for an hour. Shared sessions cost 990 THB an hour, a private lane for up to ten people 8,950 THB. The bar and restaurant around it are a कता evening in themselves. It works for children from about seven and for anyone who wants to surf in the flat high season, when the real waves at कता do not exist.

Surf lesson at Kata Beach

Schools on the sand from about 09:00 to sunset, May–October

May–October; the swell is smallest in May and October, best for beginners

Kata Yai is the island's most consistent beach break, and from May to October half a dozen surf schools set up at its northern end with soft-top boards and instructors who put beginners on their feet in an hour. Lessons cost roughly 1,000–1,600 THB an hour depending on the school and whether photos are included; board rental alone is a few hundred baht an hour. The same swell that makes the lessons possible makes the rips real — the schools stay in the marked zone and so should you. From November to April there is no surf on Phuket at all; the sea goes flat and the schools close.

The morning class — the market visit is the best part

The cooking school of the Blue Elephant restaurant, housed in the 1903 Phra Pitak Chinpracha mansion on Krabi Road: a market walk in the Old Town, then four or five royal-Thai dishes cooked at individual stations and eaten in the mansion. It is the most expensive cooking class on the island at roughly 4,500–5,400 THB per person depending on the reseller, and the most polished. The alternatives — Phuket Thai Cookery School by the sea at Siray, and the small family-run classes in कता and रावाई — teach the same curries for around half the price with less grandeur.

The Friday-evening market at the Boat Avenue shopping strip at the entrance to Laguna in बांग ताओ: a hundred or so stalls of food, crafts, clothes and drinks along the avenue, with live music and the Boat Avenue restaurants and bars open on both sides. It is the social evening of the week for the बांग ताओ and लायन villa crowd and the resort guests; the food skews international as much as Thai. Free entry. Porto de Phuket, the open-air mall across the road, has the supermarket and more restaurants for the rest of the week.

The hip night market on Yaowarat Road in Samkong, north of the Old Town: shipping-container shops, a lawn with live music, and food stalls that lean towards the young Phuket crowd — grilled meats, sushi, Thai desserts, bubble tea, craft beer. It is cheaper and less touristy than the पटोंग markets and more curated than Naka. The core days are Thursday to Saturday, though some stalls trade on other evenings. No entry fee; a meal for two is a few hundred baht. Fifteen minutes from the Old Town, thirty from पटोंग on a good night.

Naka Weekend Market

The island's biggest weekend market, on the bypass south of फुकेत टाउन near Wat Naka: hundreds of stalls of clothes, phone cases, souvenirs, counterfeit everything and a large covered food section with the full run of Thai market food. Open Saturday and Sunday from four in the afternoon, with a weekday street-food market on the same site. Entry is free. It is crowded, cheap and unglamorous, which is the point; go hungry, eat your way along the food aisle, and expect to haggle on anything not food. Taxis from the west coast take 30–45 minutes.

Phuket Indy Night Market

Free

A small midweek night market on the Limelight Avenue site on Dibuk Road, a few minutes' walk from the Old Town: vintage clothes, handmade jewellery, student stalls and a row of cheap, good food stalls with tables, plus a beer garden with live music. It runs Wednesday to Friday, which makes it the Old Town's answer for evenings when the Sunday walking street is not on. Free entry; a meal is under 200 THB. Lower-key than Chillva and much smaller than Naka, and the nearest market to the Old Town hotels.

Phuket Thai Cookery School (Siray)

Day class about 09:00–15:00; hotel pickups earlier

Any day; classes run daily

A long-established cooking school on Koh Siray, the island east of फुकेत टाउन, with an open kitchen on the beach: a morning market visit, five dishes cooked and eaten, a recipe book and hotel transfers from the main areas. It is the mid-priced option at roughly 2,200–2,500 THB and the one most people book; the class sizes are larger than the boutique schools but the teaching is thorough. A full day with transfers from the west coast. The Blue Elephant class in the Old Town is the luxury version at about twice the price.

The row of stalls on रावाई's beach road where the sea-gypsy fishing community sells the day's catch — prawns, crab, squid, snapper, shellfish — by weight, and the restaurants across the road cook it for a per-kilo fee. Prices move daily with the catch and are not published, so none is shown here; you weigh, you agree, you pay, and you eat with the longtails pulled up on the sand opposite. It is the island's best seafood evening for the money and the reason रावाई's expat community never cooks fish at home. The pier at the end is where the longtails to Coral Island and Racha leave.

Sunday Walking Street (Lard Yai), Thalang Road

Free

The island's biggest weekly event: every Sunday Thalang Road in the Old Town closes to cars from late afternoon and fills with several hundred stalls of street food, crafts, second-hand clothes and buskers, with the shophouse cafés open on both sides. It is a local market as much as a tourist one — Phuket families come for dinner — and the food is the point: grilled squid, Hokkien mee, coconut ice cream, roti, sugar-cane juice, priced for locals. Parking is hopeless after 18:00; take a taxi or park at Saphan Hin and walk. The rest of the week Thalang Road is simply the Old Town.

Tickets are about 1,500–1,600 THB for stadium seats and 1,900–2,000 THB ringside, sold online and by every tout in पटोंग. Patong Boxing Stadium on Sai Nam Yen Road is the older rival with a similar card. For training rather than watching, the gyms in चालोंग sell drop-in classes for a fraction of the price.

29 entries. Beach entries link to the beach page with lifeguard and rip-current facts; 12 of the 25 beaches in the catalogue are marked good for children.

How this list is built

This is a catalogue, not a ranking. It lists 59 places and activities that exist, are open at this revision (5 सित॰ 2026) and can be reached from the 11 areas the site tracks; each entry names its sources, and each price is either a dated figure from the operator or a reseller (with the date printed next to it) or, for the packaged boat trips, the median the site's tours index measured across operators in its latest month. The cheapest paid entry is Thalang National Museum at 100–200 THB; the dearest is Golf: Red Mountain Golf Club at 4,500–6,000 THB. 23 entries cost nothing. Where no dated figure exists — a seafood market priced by the kilo, a dive trip quoted per person per season, a yacht charter quoted per boat — the price shows a dash rather than a guess, because a wrong number is worse than none.

Two flags matter more than the categories. 'Rain' marks the 32 entries that still work in a downpour — indoor attractions, covered markets, temples with roofs, the two water parks (which, counter-intuitively, are the island's best wet-weather plan) and the boat trips into the sheltered Phang Nga Bay. 'Kids' marks the 47 that work with children, which is most of them; the exceptions are Bangla Road, the boxing stadium, the Vegetarian Festival processions and anything that involves a boat-only beach in the swell. The category pages repeat the same data with a distance table from every area, so 'Things to do with kids' and 'When it rains' exist as their own pages.

What to do in three days, and why the order matters

The short answer above is a three-day itinerary in disguise. Day one is the south: Wat Chalong and the Big Buddha in the morning (free, three hours, a taxi or scooter), कता or नाई हार्न beach in the afternoon and Promthep Cape or the Windmill Viewpoint at sunset. Day two is the water — either a Phang Nga Bay boat, which runs in every month because the bay is sheltered, or Phi Phi, which is the postcard and the roughest crossing — priced here from the tours index rather than from a single operator's brochure. Day three is the Old Town: the shophouse streets, the Thai Hua Museum and the mansion, a cooking class if you booked one, and, if it is a Sunday, the walking street on Thalang Road from four o'clock. That sequence explains the island — the south is the Thai Phuket, the bay is the geography, the town is the Chinese money that built everything else — and it costs almost nothing beyond the boat.

The order also follows the weather. The sea decides more on Phuket than the rain does: the island's marine normals show rough-sea days concentrated in May–September, when the west-coast beaches fly red flags and the Andaman-side boat trips are cancelled, and a calm sea in October–April. A visitor in August should plan the bay and the town first and treat the west-coast beaches as a bonus on a calm morning; a visitor in February can do it the other way round. The best-time-to-visit page has eleven years of monthly rain, sunshine and sea data behind that sentence.

Prices: what is dated, what is indexed, what is not shown

Three kinds of figure appear on this page. A dated anchor is a single published or reported price with its own date — the Andamanda gate price, the Big Buddha's free entry, the Sirinat park fee, a surf school's hourly rate — and it is replaced only when a newer dated source is found, never inflated forward. An index median is what the site's own Phuket Travel Price Index measured for a tour segment in its latest monthly snapshot, across operators, in US dollars per person; 4 boat-trip entries use it, and the tours page shows the sample size and spread behind each. A dash means no honest figure exists. Dollar values convert baht at the ECB reference rate on file (32.98 THB per dollar, 3 सित॰ 2026) and are there for orientation; every operator bills in baht, and every figure on this page is the operator's, not ours.

Two cautions. Reseller platforms quote different prices for the same ticket on the same day, so a range is printed where the sources disagree rather than a false precision. And several of the attractions in this list changed status in the last two years — the Big Buddha closed for eighteen months after a landslide and reopened in March 2026, Blue Tree's lagoon closed in 2024, Splash Jungle is shut for works until October 2026, सुरिन's loungers and Nui Beach's beach club were removed by order in 2025 and 2026 — which is why each entry carries a revision date and a season note rather than a timeless description.

Free, rainy and with children — the three lists people actually want

The free list is longer than most visitors expect: 23 entries, including every temple and viewpoint, the Old Town and its Sunday market, every night market, the Kathu waterfall, Monkey Hill, the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project (donation) and the beaches themselves. A day built from the free list — Wat Chalong, the Big Buddha, the Karon Viewpoint, नाई हार्न beach, the Windmill Viewpoint at sunset, the Sunday walking street for dinner — is the best day on the island for many people and costs a taxi. The rainy list is where the money goes: the two aquariums, the Trickeye gallery, the malls, the cooking classes, the water parks, the cabaret, the boxing stadium and the sheltered-bay boat trips. The children's list is both of those minus the nightlife, plus the elephant sanctuary, Hanuman World's ziplines and Coral Island by longtail, which is the shortest and calmest island crossing on Phuket.

What is not here: animal shows, tiger and crocodile parks, the dolphin show and elephant riding, which exist and are advertised on every tour board. They are left out on purpose; the gibbon project and the observation-only sanctuary are in the list because they are the other side of the same trade. Not listed either are the hundreds of massage shops, beach clubs and hotel spas, which are services rather than places — the daily-budget series of the index tracks what a day of that costs by area.

Getting to any of it

Distances are the hidden cost. The island is 50 km long, its roads cross hills, and a taxi from पटोंग to the Old Town or from बांग ताओ to चालोंग is 45 minutes and several hundred baht; the airport-transfer hub prices the first leg from the airport to each area, and the rentals series prices the scooter and car by the day for anyone who wants to string the free list together independently. The Smart Bus runs the west coast from the airport to रावाई and stops at पटोंग, कारोन and कता; the pink songthaews run from the Old Town to the beaches until early evening. Boat trips include hotel pickup in the price; the elephant sanctuary, Hanuman World, the cooking schools and the cabaret sell transfers or include them, which is why their prices look higher than the gate price of a place you drive to yourself. The beaches catalogue on this site covers the 25 beaches separately, with the sea by month and the lifeguard and rip-current facts that this page only points at.

What are the best things to do in Phuket?

For most visitors: the Big Buddha and Wat Chalong (free), the Old Town and its Sunday walking street (free), one boat day in Phang Nga Bay or to Phi Phi (index medians $52 and $63 per person), sunset at Promthep Cape (free), a swim at नाई हार्न or कता, and — with children — Andamanda water park or the elephant sanctuary. This page lists 59 places and activities with dated prices, hours and area; the top ten above is a three-day order, not a ranking.

What can you do in Phuket for free?

23 entries in this catalogue are free: the Big Buddha, Wat Chalong, the Old Town, the Sunday walking street and the other night markets, Promthep Cape and the कारोन, Windmill, Khao Rang and Khao Khad viewpoints, Kathu waterfall, Monkey Hill, Bangla Road (the street, not the drinks), Blue Tree's grounds, the malls, and every public beach. A full free day in the south — temple, Buddha, viewpoint, beach, sunset — costs a taxi or a scooter rental.

What is there to do in Phuket when it rains?

32 entries work in rain: Aquaria and the Phuket Aquarium, the Trickeye gallery, the Thai Hua Museum and Baan Chinpracha, the Central Phuket and Jungceylon malls, Naka market (covered), the cooking classes, Simon Cabaret and the boxing stadium, Surf House's artificial wave, Muay Thai drop-in classes, the water parks (rain does not close them, lightning does) and the Phang Nga Bay boat trips, which run through the monsoon because the bay is sheltered. The west-coast beaches are the one thing that stops: red flags fly on rough days in May–September.

What are the best things to do in Phuket with kids?

47 entries are marked suitable for children. The reliable ones: Andamanda water park (1,200–1,800 THB adult/child gate price), the Phuket Aquarium at पानवा (300/150 THB foreigners), Aquaria in the Central mall, Hanuman World's ziplines, the elephant sanctuary (1,900–3,000 THB, observation only), Coral Island by longtail, the Trickeye gallery, Surf House, नाई हार्न and कता beaches in the calm months, and the Sunday walking street for dinner. Not for children: Bangla Road after dark, the boxing stadium, the Vegetarian Festival processions and any boat-only beach in the monsoon swell.

How much do things to do in Phuket cost?

From nothing to a few thousand baht. Temples, viewpoints, markets and beaches are free; museums and national parks 100–300 THB; the aquariums 300–1,000 THB; Simon Cabaret 700–1,200 THB; the water park 1,200–1,800 THB; ziplines and the elephant sanctuary 2,000–3,500 THB; a day's golf 2,000–6,000 THB; boat trips $52 to $63 per person as index medians. Every figure on this page carries its date and source, and dollar values use the ECB rate of 3 सित॰ 2026.

Is the Big Buddha open, and does it cost anything?

Yes — Big Buddha reopened on 3 March 2026 after the landslide closure of August 2024 and is free to enter, 09:00–18:00 daily, last entry 17:30. Shoulders and knees must be covered; sarongs are lent at the gate. It is 6 km up a steep road from चालोंग, and Wat Chalong at the bottom of the hill is the natural pairing.

Which island trip from Phuket is best?

It depends on the month. Phang Nga Bay (James Bond island, $52 per person index median) is sheltered and runs all year; Phi Phi ($63) is the postcard and the roughest crossing, cancelled on red-flag days; the Similan Islands are the clearest water and open only 15 October – 15 May with a 500 THB park fee on top; Coral Island is the shortest and calmest crossing and the best with children, by longtail from रावाई for about 1,800–2,500 THB per boat. The tours index tracks all of these monthly.

How many days do you need in Phuket?

Three days cover the top ten on this page: one for the south (temples, Buddha, beach, cape), one on the water, one in the Old Town. A week adds a second boat day, a cooking class, a waterfall in the green season, the viewpoints loop and a beach day at each end of the island. The 59 entries here would take three weeks at a relaxed pace, which is roughly what the long-stay community does — see the areas pages for what a month costs where.
