Karon Beach is 3 km of sand in 까론, open to the south-west monsoon, lifeguarded in daylight, reached by 도로 free of charge. Best months to swim: November–April; rip-current risk from May to October: high. Good for swimming, quiet, sunset, surfing.
까론 is the long one: three kilometres of fine, pale sand that squeaks underfoot, between 빠통's headland and 까따's, with a road and a strip of mid-range resorts behind it and enough space that fifty metres of empty sand are always available. In the high season the swimming is clear and clean and the rocks at the southern end have snorkelling. The problem is the gradient. The beach steepens sharply at the waterline, the shore-break dumps close in, and from May to October the rips run out through the gaps in the bars — 까론 is red-flagged for most of the green season and takes lives most years. Just over twenty lifeguards patrol it in daylight, spaced along the length. The northern end near the roundabout is the calmest section in marginal conditions; the middle is where people get into trouble.

It takes the south-west swell directly, so it follows the island's marine normals exactly: a calm sea in October–April and rough-sea days in May–September, when red flags fly on rough days and the rip-current risk is high. Lifeguards patrol in daylight; a red flag means the sea is closed to swimming, and the guards will whistle swimmers out. Caught in a rip: float, swim parallel to the beach until the pull stops, then in.
