Areas below the minimum sample

The class was found in these areas, but with fewer than five hotels in the sample the median stays unpublished — the count is shown so the gap is visible.

What the class buys you

Five-star on Phuket means resort grounds, several restaurants, a spa, a pool or several, and usually a beach or a private cove; at the top of the class it means a villa with its own pool and a butler. The class is concentrated on the west coast headlands and the northern beaches — Surin, Kamala, Bang Tao, Layan, Nai Thon, Mai Khao — and on the Panwa cape in the east, and it is thin or absent in the long-stay south (Rawai, Nai Harn) and in Phuket Town, which is why several rows carry a sample too small for a median.

The price of a five-star night is decided more by the district than by the star. The same class runs from a Patong hillside resort with a shuttle to a headland cove in Surin, and the ranking below shows the spread. Where a five-star median sits close to, or even below, the four-star median of the same area, the reason is usually a small sample or a four-star column full of villas and residences; treat those rows as a hint to compare individual properties rather than as a rule. Low season — the observation window of the current snapshot — is when this class discounts most, so the medians here are closer to the floor of the year than to its ceiling.

Where a five-star hotel is cheapest, and where it is not

10 of the 15 areas have a published five-star median in September 2026, and it runs from $62 in Chalong to $307 in Surin, 5 times as much for the same declared class. The island-wide five-star median is $141 (n = 87); Chalong, Patong, Kamala, Nai Yang, Layan and Bang Tao sit below it, Panwa, Mai Khao, Karon and Surin above. The cheapest districts are the ones with a town around the hotels and many of them competing; the priciest are the ones where the resort is the district and the sample is a handful of large properties.

Kata (4), Nai Thon (2), Nai Harn (4), Rawai (3) and Phuket Town (1) have fewer than five five-star hotels in the sample, so the index publishes the count and no median — the class exists there, but a figure from one or two properties would describe those properties, not the district. The deepest sample is Mai Khao with 12 five-star hotels, which makes its median the most stable number in the table.

Reading the ranges

The low and high columns are the 25th and 75th percentiles — the middle half of the five-star hotels in each area — and their width says how homogeneous the class is there. The widest spread is in Kamala, where the 75th percentile ($332) is 4.9 times the 25th ($68); the tightest is Karon at $167 – $246, 1.5 to 1. A wide range means two products share one star count — a village hotel and a residence sold by the night, a beach-road hotel and a headland resort — and the median is a compromise between them. A tight range means the area's five-star hotels are genuinely alike, and the median is a price you can plan on.

Ratings are declared by the properties themselves on the booking platforms, not audited, so a five-star listing in one district is not the same promise as in another. The area pages of this hub describe what the hotel stock actually looks like street by street; where the range here is wide, that description matters more than the median.

5-star against the other classes

Island-wide, a five-star room at $141 compares with $34 for three-star (n = 177) and $62 for four-star (n = 210) in September 2026; the all-class median, hostels and unrated properties included in the sample, is $50 (n = 618). The premium over the four-star median of the same area is smallest in Layan ($62 below it) and largest in Karon ($196, 408%); the hub page lists every area with both medians.

The observation behind all of these figures is the same fixed search — one night, two adults, check-in thirty days after the snapshot, cheapest available room, before taxes and fees — repeated monthly, so the classes are compared like with like and the next revision moves every column at once. The observation month is printed next to every figure; the current one was taken in the low season.
