Layan has very few hotels and nearly all of them sit at the top of the market. Anantara Layan Phuket Resort occupies its own cove at the northern end of the beach; Dream Phuket Hotel & Spa is on the hillside above the road. That is close to the whole hotel list, which is why the samples here are small and the three-star row is empty: there are almost no three-star hotels and no hostels, and the nearest budget beds are in Bang Tao or Cherngtalay.
Everything else is villas — estates on the slopes behind the beach and along the Layan–Nai Thon road, and standalone houses on the hills with sea views — plus a recent generation of low-rise condominium projects on the slope above the beach road, aimed at owners and seasonal renters rather than package tourists. A 'four-star' listing in Layan is often a villa or a residence sold by the night, which is why the four-star range is so wide and why, in the current snapshot, its median sits above the five-star one. Read the sample size before comparing Layan with Bang Tao. Layan is for people who want the quietest, calmest stretch of the bay and are prepared to pay resort or villa prices for it.
The calmest stretch of the whole bay: sheltered by the headland, fine sand, a gentle gradient and glassy high-season mornings, with a shallow river mouth at the northern end and a low-tide walk to Koh Kala. Wet-season waves are smaller than anywhere else on the west coast, though rips run off the headland on rough days and lifeguard cover is thinner than on resort beaches.
