Bang Tao Beach is 6 km of sand in Bang Tao, open to the south-west monsoon, lifeguarded in daylight, reached by route free of charge. Best months to swim: November–April; rip-current risk from May to October: high. Good for swimming, children, quiet, sunset.
Bang Tao is long enough to change character three times: the southern end near Surin has the beach clubs and the Laguna hotels' loungers, the middle in front of the villa estates is wide and mostly empty, and the northern end towards Layan has fishing boats, a couple of seafood shacks and more sand than people. The gradient is gentle for most of its length and the water clear in the high season, which makes it the north's family beach. In the wet season it has a moderate shore-break and rips, and red flags go up on rough days, though it is generally kinder than Surin or Karon; the northern end near Layan is the most sheltered. Lifeguards patrol the busier stretches in daylight. Jellyfish arrive after storms — ask the beach-club staff, who are in the water daily.

It takes the south-west swell directly, so it follows the island's marine normals exactly: a calm sea in October–April and rough-sea days in May–September, when red flags fly on rough days and the rip-current risk is high. Lifeguards patrol in daylight; a red flag means the sea is closed to swimming, and the guards will whistle swimmers out. Caught in a rip: float, swim parallel to the beach until the pull stops, then in.
