Flights, visa, season and a weekly budget in CNY — for travellers from China.
Month-end reference rates since January 2014: what one CNY buys in Thai baht, and what that does to the price of Phuket for you. A rising line means your money buys more baht.
Phuket is 9.5% cheaper for you than in 2019, purely from the exchange rate. 2019 average: 1 CNY = 4.481 THB; latest month: 1 CNY = 4.906 THB. 1 THB = 0.204 CNY.

Work permits are the only count by nationality: China nationals on retirement, family, education or DTV visas are not in it. Reference points: the 2010 census counted 94,690 non-Thai residents (18.0%); the civil register held 9,345 non-Thai names at the end of 2025.

China is Phuket's largest source market by arrivals in most years, and the island has been shaped by it: Chinese-language signage in Patong and Karon, tour-bus bays at the Big Buddha and Wat Chalong, mobile-payment QR codes at every counter, and, since the mutual visa exemption of 2024, a shift from group tours to independent travellers who rent villas, hire cars and eat in the Old Town. The relationship is old too: much of Phuket Town was built by Hokkien families, and the shrines that run the Vegetarian Festival are Chinese.

As of September 2026, Phuket has nonstop flights from more Chinese cities than from any other country. Year-round services include Shanghai (Shanghai Airlines, Juneyao, Spring Airlines), Guangzhou (China Southern, Spring), Chengdu (Air China, Sichuan Airlines, Spring) and Kunming (China Eastern), with Beijing, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Xi'an, Nanjing, Wuhan, Changsha and Hong Kong served by Chinese and Thai carriers, some year-round and some only in the winter and holiday seasons. Thai Airways, Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Thai VietJet operate many of the routes from the Thai side.
Flight times run from about three hours from Kunming and Guangzhou to five from Shanghai and six from Beijing. One-stop connections through Bangkok add two to three hours and cover every large Chinese city. Frequencies on this market swing sharply with the holiday calendar: routes that fly daily in January and during Golden Week may run twice a week in September. Check the airline for the month you are travelling.

Chinese citizens with ordinary passports enter Thailand without a visa under the China–Thailand mutual visa-exemption agreement that took effect on 1 March 2024. Checked 4 September 2026: the stay is 30 days per entry, with a cumulative limit of 90 days in any 180-day period. Thailand's Royal Gazette notices of 31 August 2026, which cut the general visa exemption to 30 days from 15 September 2026, do not affect the bilateral agreement; the Thai authorities state that separate bilateral arrangements continue to apply. A single extension of up to 30 days can be requested at an immigration office for a fee, at the officer's discretion.
Every traveller must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within three days before arrival; it is free, has a Chinese-language interface, and immigration expects the QR code on your phone. For stays longer than the exemption, or for study, work or retirement, apply through the Thai e-Visa system before travelling. The planned Electronic Travel Authorisation had not launched as of the check date. Rules change; confirm on the official site or with the Thai embassy before you fly.
Thailand is one of the easiest countries outside China to pay with a phone. Alipay and WeChat Pay are accepted at the large chains, the malls, the airport, many hotels and a growing number of ordinary shops and restaurants in the tourist districts, through the tie-ups with Thai payment networks; the merchant scans your code or you scan theirs. UnionPay cards are accepted at most ATMs and at the larger shops, and UnionPay's rates are usually better than the exchange booths'. Bring some cash anyway: markets, street food, taxis, longtail boats and small shops in the south and the north of the island still want baht notes.
Thai ATMs charge a fixed 220 baht per withdrawal on foreign cards; withdraw larger sums less often. Exchange booths take yuan notes at reasonable rates, better than the airport. Decline ATM offers to convert to yuan at the machine's rate. Tipping is not expected but small change left at restaurants and a little for hotel and massage staff is appreciated. Prices in the tourist districts are negotiable at markets and fixed everywhere else.
Chinese New Year (6 February 2027; 17 February 2026) is Phuket's second-highest peak after Christmas and the fortnight when Chinese arrivals dominate the island; hotels in Patong and Karon are booked months ahead and prices are at their annual high. The National Day Golden Week, 1 to 7 October, falls at the end of the wet season, when the rains are easing and the sea is often still rough on the west coast; the east coast and Phuket Town are better bets that week. Labour Day in early May is the start of the wet season, and the summer holidays in July and August are its middle: cheaper, wetter, with red flags on the west-coast beaches on many days.
The dry season, November to April, is the island at its best and its priciest. For families who can travel outside the public holidays, late November and March are the months with good sea, full restaurants and rooms available. The Similan Islands are open from mid-October to mid-May only, and Phi Phi boats are cancelled on rough days in the wet season.
Thailand runs on 220 volts and its sockets take flat two-pin plugs (the same as China's Type A) and round two-pin plugs; the angled three-pin Chinese plug does not fit, so bring one adapter for the laptop. Driving is on the left, the opposite of the mainland, which matters most in the first hours on a scooter; an international driving permit is required, and Chinese licences alone are not accepted by the police or insurers. Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and the rest are open in Thailand, so most visitors set up an eSIM or buy a Thai SIM at the airport for a week of unfiltered internet.
Tap water is not for drinking. Temples require covered shoulders and knees and no shoes; Wat Chalong and the Big Buddha provide sarongs. Thai food is spicier and sweeter than most Chinese regional cuisines, and Phuket's own cooking, Hokkien noodles, dim sum breakfasts and Peranakan dishes, will feel familiar to anyone from Fujian. Chinese-language menus and staff are common in Patong and Karon and rare elsewhere. Thais are quiet in public and dislike raised voices; queues are respected. Alcohol is not sold in shops between 2pm and 5pm.
By observation, Chinese visitors on package and group tours stay overwhelmingly in Patong and Karon, where the large hotels, the shopping and the tour-bus logistics are, with Kata and Kamala as the family alternatives. Independent travellers, a growing share since 2024, have spread further: villas in Bang Tao and Layan for groups of friends and families, boutique hotels in the Old Town for the café and photography crowd, and resorts in Mai Khao and Nai Yang for those who want the pool and nothing else.
Long-stayers from China are still few compared with Russians and Europeans, but they exist, mostly families with children at the international schools in Cherngtalay and Thalang, living in Bang Tao and Layan. If you are planning a month or longer, the form below goes to a Phuket agency that handles monthly villa and apartment rentals.

Direct-flight data for China is not collected yet; it is added with the first country refresh. Phuket's airport is Phuket International Airport (HKT), on the north of the island.
Visa rules for China passport holders are added with the first country refresh. Until then, check the official Thai e-Visa site — this page does not guess entry rules.
Thailand uses the Thai baht (THB). As of 2026-09-04, 1 CNY = 4.906 THB (1 THB = 0.204 CNY), the last reference rate of the month from ECB via Frankfurter; that is +9.5% against the 2019 average, so purely from the exchange rate Phuket is 9.5% cheaper for a visitor paying in CNY than it was in 2019. Index prices are observed in US dollars and converted at 1 USD = 6.72 CNY; the chart on this page shows the monthly series since 2014.
High season is November to April — the dry months, with the highest prices. Low season, May to October, brings more rain and lower prices. The index tags every price with the season of the travel date, so both can be compared on the same page.
A weekly budget in CNY is shown on this page, built from the index medians (hotel night, daily budget, airport transfer) and the dated exchange rate. It is an estimate from medians; a booking will differ by dates, property and season.
Thailand runs on 220 V, 50 Hz. Sockets take plug types A, B, C and O; most hotel sockets accept flat two-pin (A/B) and round two-pin (C) plugs, so travellers from Europe and North America rarely need more than a simple adapter.
