Kata: hotel, villa and living costs (October 2026)

Kata is the west coast's compromise district, and it is a good one. It has two beaches, Kata Yai and the smaller Kata Noi behind a headland, a town centre small enough to walk end to end in fifteen minutes, and enough restaurants, minimarts and massage shops to feel like a resort without feeling like Patong. The hills behind it are steep and green, and the road south climbs to the Karon Viewpoint, which is the postcard of three bays that appears on every Phuket poster.

Kata Yai is about a kilometre and a half of sand with a gentle gradient and a small island, Koh Pu, off the southern end that you can swim towards in calm conditions. In the high season the water is clear and flat; there is decent snorkelling along the rocks at both ends. Kata Noi, five minutes over the hill, is shorter, slightly steeper and usually quieter, with a couple of large resorts along it and nothing else.

Kata's accommodation runs the full ladder. Guesthouses and small three-star hotels fill the streets behind the beach road and the slope towards Karon. Club Med Phuket occupies the centre of Kata Yai's beachfront, a large family resort with the beach in front of it. At the top end, Kata Rocks sits on the headland between the two bays and the Katathani Phuket Beach Resort and The Shore at Katathani take up most of Kata Noi. Mom Tri's Villa Royale, on the same headland, is the old-money choice.

The beach road and the two streets behind it are lined with Thai restaurants that have been feeding the same families for twenty years; the seafood places at the southern end of Kata Yai cook fish by weight. Mom Tri's Boathouse on the beach is the special-occasion address, and the Kata Night Market (a small local market on Kata Road near the temple) covers grilled chicken, som tam and noodles in the evening.

The airport is forty-two kilometres away by the coast road, which is about an hour and a quarter in normal traffic and closer to two in a downpour. Grab and Bolt work; the Phuket Smart Bus stops on the beach road on its airport–Rawai run, and songthaews (open-sided local buses) leave for Phuket Town from the main road. The hill road north to Karon is flat and walkable; the hill road south to Nai Harn is steep with hairpins.

Kata's monthly market splits into two: sea-view villas on the hills, popular with families who want a pool and a school run to Chalong, and condominiums along the Kata–Chalong road and behind the beach, popular with couples and remote workers who want a walk to the sand. Older apartment blocks in the sois offer the cheapest furnished rooms on the west coast outside Patong.

Kata is not cheap in high season; demand from families pushes the four-star rates above Karon's. The beach road gets congested on December and January evenings, and the town has almost no pavement, so walking with a pushchair means walking on the road. Low-season surf closes the beach for swimmers for days at a time, which is the trade-off for the surf school.
