The lie of the land

Nai Harn is the bay at the bottom of the island, a horseshoe of sand between two headlands with a freshwater lake behind it, a monastery at one end and Promthep Cape, the sunset viewpoint on every itinerary, ten minutes up the road. It has no strip and no tower; what it has is a village of cafés, yoga studios, minimarts and small restaurants spread around the lake and up the hill roads, and a community of residents that is older and more settled than anywhere else on the coast.

It suits couples who want a beautiful beach and a slow pace, long-stayers who want a village rather than a resort, families with older children, and surfers in the wet season. It is far from the airport and from the north, and it is not the place for anyone who wants nightlife closer than Rawai's bars or Kata's restaurants.

Beach and sea

Nai Harn Beach is about seven hundred metres of pale sand with a moderate gradient and, in the high season, some of the clearest water on the island. The headlands shelter it from most directions and the bay is a yacht anchorage in the calm months. The northern end near the monastery is the quietest; the southern end has the loungers and a few vendors. Ya Nui, a small cove over the southern headland, has snorkelling from the sand, and Ao Sane, reached through a hotel driveway to the north, has a rocky reef.

From May to October Nai Harn becomes a surf beach with a fast shore-break and rips that run out along the headlands; the red flags are up for much of the season and the lifeguards are busy. It is a good beach for intermediate surfers and a bad one for beginners on big days. Jellyfish drift in after storms.

Where to stay

Nai Harn's hotel stock is small and mostly mid-range. The Nai Harn, on the southern headland, is the bay's only large upmarket hotel; Sunsuri Phuket sits on the hill above the lake, and All Seasons Naiharn Phuket and a handful of smaller resorts occupy the roads behind the beach. Guesthouses and small three-star places cluster around the lake and towards Rawai.

The real accommodation here is houses. Villas with pools sit on the hills between Nai Harn and Rawai and on the slopes above Ya Nui; townhouses and older single-storey houses fill the flat land towards Rawai. Condominiums are few and low-rise. Hostels exist in the Rawai direction rather than in Nai Harn itself.

Eating out

The village around the lake is café country: breakfast places, bakeries, juice bars and a few of the island's better vegetarian kitchens, serving the yoga and long-stay crowd from early morning. The beach itself has a couple of Thai restaurants under the trees and the hotel restaurants. For seafood, Rawai's market and its cook-your-fish restaurants are ten minutes away.

The Rawai–Nai Harn road and Soi Saiyuan, the lane that connects them, have the south's best mix of Thai, Italian, French and health-food restaurants. The Saturday afternoon market at the Rawai end and the Nai Harn lake's evening food stalls cover the informal end.

Getting around

Nai Harn is forty-five kilometres from the airport, the furthest of the fifteen districts, and the drive takes an hour and a quarter at best and closer to two in the evening rush. Grab and Bolt work; the Phuket Smart Bus terminates in Rawai, ten minutes away. Songthaews to Phuket Town run from the Rawai main road.

The bay and the lake are walkable, and the road to Rawai is flat. Everything else is hills: the road over to Kata has steep hairpins and the Promthep loop is a scooter ride for confident riders only. Most residents have a scooter or a car.

Staying a month or longer

Monthly rentals here are houses and villas first: pool villas on the hills between Nai Harn and Rawai, townhouses and single-storey houses on the flat, and a small number of apartments near the lake. The market is priced below Bang Tao and above Rawai, and the best sea-view villas rent by the season. Minimums of a month are standard in high season; owners are flexible in the wet months.

The people who stay a season or a year here are older couples and retirees, families with children at BCIS in Chalong, and remote workers who want a village and a beach rather than a scene. If you are planning a month or longer, the form below goes to VillaCarte; say whether you want to be walkable to the lake or would rather have a hillside pool and a car.

The honest downsides

Distance: everything north of Chalong is an hour away, and the airport transfer is the island's longest. The beach car park fills by mid-morning in high season and the bay gets busy on weekends with day-trippers from the whole south. The wet-season surf closes the beach to swimmers for long stretches.

Nightlife is a few bars in Rawai. The village lacks pavements and the hill roads are steep and dark. Hospitals are half an hour away. And the settled, older character that makes Nai Harn restful can feel closed to anyone under thirty who wants to meet people; for that, Kata and Bang Tao are livelier.
