Kazakhstan is a small market by numbers and a large one by loyalty. Almaty and Astana have had nonstop flights to Phuket for years, the winter is long and cold at home, and the island has a Russian-speaking infrastructure that a family from Almaty can use from the first day. Kazakh visitors are mostly families on a two-week winter escape, but a growing number of remote workers and business owners spend the whole season, and the villa estates of Bang Tao have a Kazakh contingent that returns every year.

As of September 2026, Air Astana flies nonstop from Almaty to Phuket several times a week year-round, with a flight time of about seven hours, and from Astana on a seasonal or reduced schedule; the carrier has been adding frequency to Thailand for several winters. SCAT Airlines and other Kazakh carriers have operated seasonal and charter flights to Phuket from Almaty, Astana and Shymkent in the winter months; these come and go with the season, so check for your dates.

One-stop options run through Bangkok on Air Astana and Thai Airways, through Tashkent on Uzbekistan Airways, through Dubai on flydubai and Emirates, and through Istanbul on Turkish Airlines, with total journey times of ten to fourteen hours. Kazakh-issued Visa and Mastercard cards work on foreign airline websites, which makes booking simpler than for travellers from Russia.

Kazakh citizens enter Thailand without a visa under a bilateral agreement. Checked 4 September 2026: the stay is 30 days per entry. Kazakhstan was covered by the general 60-day exemption from mid-2024, but the Royal Gazette notices of 31 August 2026 that cut the general exemption to 30 days from 15 September 2026 do not list Kazakhstan; the Thai authorities state that separate bilateral arrangements continue to apply, and for Kazakhstan that is the 30-day agreement. A single extension of up to 30 days can be requested at an immigration office for a fee, at the officer's discretion.

Every traveller must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within three days before arrival; it is free and immigration wants the QR code. Cumulative stays are watched: anyone approaching 90 days in Thailand in the past 180 may be questioned at the border. For longer stays, the Destination Thailand Visa for remote workers and the tourist and education visas through the Thai e-Visa system are the routes. The planned Electronic Travel Authorisation had not launched as of the check date. Rules change; confirm with the Thai embassy in Astana or the e-Visa site before you fly.

Money

The Thai baht is the only currency you will use. Tenge is accepted by a handful of exchange booths in Patong and Bang Tao, at rates that make it a last resort; bring US dollars in new, unmarked, large notes, which get the best rates on the island, or euros. Kazakh Visa and Mastercard cards work normally in Thai ATMs and shops, unlike Russian ones, and the fintech cards from the Kazakh banks with low foreign-transaction fees are the cheapest way to pay for hotels and restaurants.

Thai ATMs add a fixed 220 baht per withdrawal on foreign cards, so withdraw larger sums less often, and decline the machine's offer to convert to tenge. PromptPay QR codes are on every counter but need a Thai bank account; carry cash for markets, taxis, boats and street food. Tipping is modest: round up taxis, leave small change at restaurants, and give a little to hotel and massage staff.

When to go

The Kazakh calendar fits Phuket's dry season well. The New Year holidays at the start of January are the island's peak fortnight, booked months ahead; the long weekends of Nauryz in late March fall in the hot, calm end of the dry season; and the winter in Almaty and Astana is long enough that families come any time from November to March. Phuket in these months has its best sea and its highest prices.

The Kazakh summer holidays, June to August, are Phuket's wet season: cheaper, warm, with afternoon storms and red flags on the west coast on many days, and the island boats restricted. Families who travel then choose the east coast or Phuket Town, or a resort with big pools. October, as the rains ease and before the rates rise, is the value month. For anyone considering the whole winter, arriving in early November gets the best choice of villas.

Practical differences

Thailand runs on 220 volts with sockets that take the two-pin European plug, the same as Kazakhstan's, so chargers fit without an adapter; only earthed Schuko plugs sit loosely. Driving is on the left, the opposite of home, and it catches scooter riders at every junction on the first day; an international driving permit is required, and the Kazakh licence alone will not satisfy the police or an insurer.

Buy a Thai SIM at the airport or an eSIM before you fly; roaming is expensive. Tap water is not for drinking. Temples want covered shoulders and knees and no shoes. Russian is spoken in many shops, clinics and agencies in Bang Tao, Karon and Rawai, and Russian-language menus are common, which makes the island unusually easy for Kazakh visitors; English is the working language elsewhere. Halal food is easy to find, because roughly a third of Phuket's population is Muslim: Nai Yang, Kamala, Cherngtalay and parts of Patong all have halal kitchens, and Kazakh visitors who keep halal find the north-west convenient. Alcohol is not sold in shops from 2pm to 5pm.

Where visitors from here stay

By observation, Kazakh visitors follow the Russian-speaking pattern on the island, with their own emphasis: families on package holidays in Karon, Kata and Patong; families and groups renting villas in Bang Tao, Layan and Kamala for two to four weeks in winter; and a small long-stay community in Rawai and Bang Tao. Bang Tao is the district most Kazakh families who have been more than once end up in, because the villas, the schools and the halal food of Cherngtalay are all there.
