The British have been coming to Phuket since the first package flights in the 1980s, and the island still has the feel of a British winter resort in places: full English breakfasts in Karon, Premier League in every bar in Patong, retired couples in Rawai who came for a fortnight in 1998 and never quite left. Phuket for a British traveller is usually a two-week winter escape, a honeymoon, or, increasingly, a month or more of remote work in a villa while the UK does January.

As of September 2026, the UK is about to get its first scheduled nonstop to Phuket in years: Virgin Atlantic starts London Heathrow to Phuket on 18 October 2026, three times a week on a Boeing 787-9, as a seasonal winter route, with a flight time of just over twelve hours. British Airways sells Phuket through its partner Qatar Airways rather than nonstop; Thai Airways flies Heathrow to Bangkok daily and connects to Phuket in Bangkok.

One-stop remains the standard: through Doha on Qatar Airways, Dubai on Emirates and Abu Dhabi on Etihad from Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow, with total journey times of fourteen to sixteen hours; through Bangkok on Thai Airways and EVA Air; or through Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. The Gulf routes are usually the cheapest and have the most departure points outside London. Check the Virgin schedule for the exact operating dates in your month; seasonal routes shift.

Entry and visa

British passport holders can enter Thailand without a visa for tourism. Checked 4 September 2026: from 15 September 2026 the visa-free stay is 30 days per entry, replacing the 60 days that applied from mid-2024. The United Kingdom is on the new list of 60 countries and territories published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026. A single extension of up to 30 days can be requested at an immigration office for a fee, at the officer's discretion. Anyone who arrived before 15 September keeps the stay stamped in on entry.

Every traveller must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within three days before arrival; it is free, replaces the old paper card, and immigration wants the QR code. For longer stays, the Destination Thailand Visa for remote workers, the retirement visa for the over-fifties and the tourist visa through the Thai e-Visa system are the routes, and all are applied for before travelling. The planned Electronic Travel Authorisation for visa-exempt visitors had not launched as of the check date. Rules change; confirm on the FCDO travel advice or the Thai e-Visa site before you fly.

Money

The Thai baht is the only currency you will use. Sterling changes easily on the island, and the exchange booths in the towns beat the airport and the hotels. British debit and credit cards work in Thai ATMs and at most hotels, restaurants and larger shops; the app-based banks and the cards with no foreign-transaction fee save real money over a fortnight compared with a high-street debit card, which typically charges a percentage plus a per-withdrawal fee.

Thai ATMs add a fixed 220 baht per withdrawal on foreign cards, so withdraw larger sums less often, and always decline the machine's offer to convert to sterling. PromptPay QR codes are on every counter but need a Thai bank account; carry cash for markets, taxis, boats and street food. Tipping is lighter than in the UK: round up taxi fares, leave small change at restaurants, and give a little to hotel and massage staff. Service charges appear on some hotel bills and cover the tip.

When to go

The British calendar fits Phuket reasonably well. Christmas and New Year are the island's peak fortnight, with the best sea and the highest prices, and they are booked by September. February half-term falls in the middle of the dry season, warm and calm; Easter and the April holidays are the hot end of it, with Songkran, the water festival, in mid-April. May half-term is the start of the wet season and is cheap.

The summer holidays, late July to early September, are Phuket's monsoon: warm, with afternoon storms, red flags on the west-coast beaches on many days and Phi Phi and Similan boats cancelled or restricted. Families who travel then do fine by choosing the east coast or Phuket Town, or a resort with big pools, and treating a calm beach day as a bonus. October half-term is a good compromise as the rains ease. For remote workers and retirees, November to March is the season, and arriving in early November gets the best choice of villas.

Practical differences

Thailand runs on 220 volts, the same as the UK, but the sockets take flat two-pin and round two-pin plugs, not the British three-pin; bring adapters. Driving is on the left, as at home, which makes the scooter easier than for most visitors; an international driving permit is required, and rental shops that do not ask for it will not help when the police or an insurer does. Travel insurance that covers scooters is not the default, so read the policy.

Buy a Thai SIM at the airport or use an eSIM; UK roaming in Thailand is expensive on most tariffs. Tap water is not for drinking. Temples require covered shoulders and knees for everyone, and shoes off; the Big Buddha and Wat Chalong provide sarongs. Private hospitals in Phuket are excellent and much cheaper than private care at home, but they want an insurance card or a deposit for anything beyond emergencies. Alcohol is not sold in shops between 2pm and 5pm. Sunburn arrives on day one, not day three. Thai politeness is real: raised voices get slower service, not faster.

Where visitors from here stay

By observation, British visitors have spread across the west coast with the package operators: Patong for nightlife and the younger and stag-and-hen crowd, Karon and Kata for families and couples on a fortnight's package, Kamala and Surin for those who want quieter and pay for it, and Bang Tao and Layan for the villa and luxury end, including a lot of honeymoons. Mai Khao's big resorts take the all-inclusive market.

The long-stay pattern is the south: Rawai, Nai Harn and Chalong have a large British resident community of retirees and part-year residents, and remote workers have started to fill Bang Tao and Phuket Town.
