Short answer. Songkran, the Thai New Year, falls on 13–15 April and turns Phuket into a three-day water fight, mostly concentrated in Patong, around Phuket Town and on beach roads. April is also the hottest month: the climate normals (2015–2025) give daytime highs of 30.7 °C, 311 h of sunshine and 183 mm of rain. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports counted 1,127,817 visitors in April 2026. The index’s latest observation (October 2026) is not an April month, so a four-star night in Patong reads $72 today; the Songkran premium is something the index will measure, not guess.

What Songkran is, and what it is not

Songkran marks the traditional Thai New Year. The core of the festival is quiet and ritual: families visit temples, pour scented water over Buddha images and over the hands of elders as a blessing, and clean their homes. The street water fight that visitors know is the loud modern descendant of that gesture. In practice both exist side by side in Phuket, sometimes a few hundred metres apart.

The national holiday window is 13–15 April. In Phuket the water play is concentrated on those dates, although individual venues, beach roads and night spots often start earlier or keep going longer. The exact programme, road closures and any restrictions on water-throwing are set by the municipality and published close to the date, so treat anything printed months ahead as provisional.

Two things follow for planning. First, Songkran is a domestic holiday as much as an international one: Thai families travel, so the island fills from two directions. Second, it falls at the very end of the dry season, in the hottest weather of the year, which is exactly why the water is welcome.

April on the numbers

April is the end of the north-east monsoon’s dry spell and the start of the build-up to the wet season. The figures below are the median of eleven years (2015–2025) from the Open-Meteo ERA5 reanalysis for a west-coast grid point, so they describe a typical month, not a forecast. Wave and rough-sea fields start in 2022 and rest on a smaller sample.

Measure March April May
Rain 73 mm 183 mm 343 mm
Rain days 14 25 28
Heavy-rain days 0 2 4
Sunshine 343 h 311 h 298 h
Day max 31.7 °C 30.7 °C 29.8 °C
Night min 25.4 °C 25.7 °C 25.6 °C
Humidity 76% 82% 86%
Sea state calm calm swell
Rough-sea days 0 0 4

The climate fact that matters most is the direction of travel. The hottest month of the year is March, the driest is February and the sunniest is March. Songkran therefore sits at or next to the thermal peak, which is the reason the festival has a water theme at all. Read across the rain row and you can see the island starting to turn toward the wet season: May already carries 343 mm of rain against 183 mm in April. For the whole calendar on one chart see best time to visit.

Heat, humidity and the sea

Daytime highs of 30.7 °C and nights of 25.7 °C with 82% humidity mean the afternoon is the hard part of the day. Plan the street fun for the morning or late afternoon and the indoor or in-water hours for the middle. The normal sea-surface temperature in April is 30.7 °C, close to the warmest of the year (May is the warmest month on file), so the sea is a comfortable refuge rather than a shock.

The sea on the west coast is typically calm in April, with 0 rough-sea days in the normal month, against 13 in July. That is the main reason April is a good boat month: day trips run reliably, as covered in the monsoon season guide for the opposite end of the year. Flags on the beach override any statistic, and swimming should be on green only.

How crowded is Phuket around Songkran

Official counts are monthly, not daily, so no source shows the three festival days on their own. What the Ministry of Tourism and Sports does publish is the month:

Measure April 2025 April 2026
Visitors 1,174,215 1,127,817
Foreign visitors 866,723 827,711
Hotel occupancy 81.8% 77.2%
Guest arrivals 1,062,374 989,413

Compare these with the neighbouring months to see where April sits: March 2026 recorded 1,127,519 visitors and May 2026 1,088,322. Where a cell reads as a placeholder, the source has not published that month, and this guide does not fill it. The airport tells a similar story from another angle: Phuket airport handled 1,507,379 passengers in April 2025, of which 907,537 were international, against 2,000,332 in January 2025, the peak-season reference.

The practical reading is that April is a busy shoulder month with a spike inside it. If you need a quiet beach, the middle of April’s second half and the first weeks of May are the calmer end of the same weather; if you want the atmosphere, accept the crowds.

Who comes

Markets differ in how they travel at this time of year. The MOTS nationality tables show the top three foreign markets in 2025 were Russia (17.3%), China (12.8%), India (10.2%). Russia’s April 2025 guest arrivals were 142,122, China’s were 71,329 and India’s were 93,845. For how each market’s volume moves through the year, the tourism statistics hub has the monthly detail and the statistics explained describes how to read it.

Where to be: area by area

The same festival feels different depending on where you sleep. These are the three areas worth comparing; the full list is in where to stay in Phuket by area.

Patong is the loud one. It is on the west coast, 32 km from the airport by the index’s reference route, and its main street and beach road are where the largest crowds and the most organised water play gather. If the point of your trip is the party, sleep here or very near; if it is not, expect noise, wet streets and slow traffic. See the Patong page.

Kata (and neighbouring Karon) is the family-friendly middle: 42 km from the airport, with a beach that stays a beach. Water play happens in the village streets, but the mood is lighter and the evenings quieter. See Kata.

Phuket Town has the most cultural version of the festival. Temple ceremonies, family gatherings and the Old Town streets give you the ritual side alongside the splashing, and it is the cheapest base in the index. See Phuket Town.

What it costs: the index

The index records what is observable. Its latest observation is October 2026, which is a different season from April, so the figures below are the current baseline and not Songkran prices. They are included because they show the relative ordering of the areas and because the index will add an April observation when it measures one. It does not extrapolate.

Area 3-star 4-star All hotels (n)
Patong $45 $72 $54 (48)
Kata $74 $150 $86 (60)
Phuket Town $37 $59 $37 (54)
Island-wide $56 $107 $78 (628)

Prices are per night for two adults, a search-result rate before taxes and fees. The island-wide four-star range is $66–174. For the standing series see the hotel price index.

What to expect from a festival-week premium

Two mechanisms push prices up around Songkran, and neither is a number the index should invent. The first is demand: a national holiday plus international arrivals compresses supply near the main party street. The second is minimum-stay rules, which some properties apply to festival dates. Both are visible at booking time, not in advance, so the honest advice is to compare the festival-week rate with the same hotel a fortnight either side before you commit, and to see whether the extra is for the room or for the location.

Daily spending

Daily-budget observations give the baseline for food and drink away from the hotel:

Area Street Mid Fine
Patong $18 $39 $84
Kata $18 $38 $85
Phuket Town $15 $32 $78

These are per person per day, observed at October 2026 or the latest month with enough data. Festival dates can add cover charges and inflated drink prices at specific venues; those are venue decisions and are not in the series. For a full-week budget, the components are in how much does a week in Phuket cost, and the calculator below uses the same medians.

Getting around on the wet days

Transport is the other thing that changes. Roads around Patong and Phuket Town are slower during the festival and some are closed to vehicles for events. The index baselines for a ride from the airport area are:

Area Taxi Ride-hailing Minivan
Patong $24 $23 $44
Kata $29 $27 $47
Phuket Town $21 $18 $41

Add time rather than money to your plan: a journey that is routine in January can take noticeably longer on a festival afternoon. Pre-arranged airport pickups avoid the queue on arrival; see the airport transfer guide and taxi and ride-hailing prices. If you rent a scooter for the days, read the scooter guide first: wet roads, crowds and festival-day drinking are the worst combination for a rider, and a helmet is the legal minimum, not the safe one.

Practical etiquette and safety

The following points are about how the festival works, not about prices; they carry no figures on purpose.

  • Target the willing. Throwing water at monks, the elderly, babies, people on motorbikes and anyone carrying something delicate is considered bad manners. Water at moving riders is also dangerous.
  • Dress for it. Quick-dry clothes, closed bags, a waterproof pouch for the phone and a copy of the passport rather than the original.
  • Powder and paste. Some groups smear white or coloured paste on faces as a blessing. Accept it or politely wave it away; either is fine.
  • Alcohol and driving. Thai law on drink-driving applies in full during the holiday and enforcement is visible on the main roads.
  • Eyes and ears. Ice-cold water in a crowd can be a shock; protect ears and eyes in particular for children.
  • Health. Heat, dehydration and sunburn are the common complaints of the festival. For clinics and emergencies, see hospitals for tourists.

Specific rules, such as limits on powder or on where water may be thrown, change from year to year and are announced locally. Check them shortly before travel rather than relying on any printed list.

Songkran with children

The festival is easier with children than its reputation suggests, if you choose the place and the hour. Phuket Town and the quieter beaches have water play that is closer to a neighbourhood game than a street party. Morning is the family window, before the crowds and the heat build. The wet-season build-up also means a late-afternoon shower is possible in April (25 rain days in the normal month), which is a natural point to end the day. More ideas are in Phuket with kids.

Exchange rate and budgeting

Prices in this guide are in US dollars. The index converts baht at the ECB reference rate, currently 33.41 THB per USD (ECB, 16 October 2026). A strong or weak baht in April moves what the festival costs you in your own currency more than a small change in hotel pricing does. Visitors from India can check 1 INR = 0.3519 THB (ECB via Frankfurter, 16 October 2026), and those from Russia 1 RUB = 0.4011 THB (Bank of Russia, 17 October 2026).

Planning timeline

A sensible order of decisions, working backwards from the festival dates:

  1. Four to six months out: choose the area, since that sets the character of the stay. Patong for the party, Kata or Karon for family beaches, Phuket Town for culture and the lowest base prices.
  2. Three months out: book flights if you need to arrive on or before 12 April. The airport handled 1,507,379 passengers in April 2025 and January 2025 (2.00 M) is the busiest month on record for the airport, so seats are not unlimited.
  3. Two months out: book the room. Compare the festival-week rate with the rate a week earlier or later.
  4. Last fortnight: check the municipal programme, any restrictions and the weather outlook, and book day trips for dates outside the festival peak.
  5. On arrival: keep documents dry, carry small notes and avoid planning an airport transfer or a long drive on 13 or 14 April.

If your priority is a long stay rather than a week, the festival is the start of the hot, humid spell that precedes the rains, and leases signed in April are priced into a different season from those signed in December. See renting a villa for a month for the mechanism.

How this guide handles prices

A Songkran guide invites precise-sounding numbers: “hotels double”, “rooms from X”. This one avoids both. The index measures a search-result rate for a one-night stay about thirty days ahead; it published its latest observation in October 2026 and has not yet measured an April stay. A figure for Songkran would be a guess, and the project rule is that a null is better than a guess. When the index reaches April it will publish the number and the guide’s tokens will pick it up, with the date attached.

FAQ

When is Songkran in Phuket?

Songkran is the Thai New Year, observed nationally on 13–15 April, and Phuket’s water play is concentrated on those days. Some venues and beach roads keep celebrating for longer, so check the municipal programme close to the date.

What is the weather like in Phuket during Songkran?

April is the hottest stretch of the year. The normals (2015–2025) give daytime highs of 30.7 °C, nights of 25.7 °C, 311 h of sunshine and 183 mm of rain on 25 days.

Is the sea good for swimming at Songkran?

Usually. The April normal sea state is calm, with 0 rough-sea days against 13 in July. Flags still decide on the day.

How crowded is Phuket in April?

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports counted 1,127,817 visitors in April 2026 and 1,174,215 in April 2025. Hotel occupancy was 77.2% in April 2026.

How much is a hotel in Patong during Songkran?

The index holds $72 per night for a four-star in Patong at its latest observation (October 2026). That observation is not an April one, and the index does not extrapolate, so no Songkran rate is quoted until one has been measured.

Should I book early for Songkran?

Yes. Songkran is a national holiday, so Thai domestic travel overlaps with international arrivals. Book the scarce item, a room near the main party street or a villa, first.

Can families and non-participants avoid the water?

Yes. Phuket Town and the quieter beaches see far less street splashing than Patong, and indoor plans fill the middle of the day. Waterproof pouches for phones and documents are sensible everywhere.

Prices in this guide are live medians of the Phuket Travel Price Index, revision October 2026; they are re-rendered after every observation on the 1st and 15th, so the figures you see are the current ones, not the ones at the time of writing.
