What the hotels in Bang Tao are like
Bang Tao's hotel supply is organised around Laguna Phuket, the resort complex on former tin-mine land behind the middle of the bay. Banyan Tree, Angsana, Dusit Thani, SAii and Cassia share the estate, its golf course and its shuttle boats, and between them cover four-star to five-star-plus at one address. Outside Laguna, the beachfront and the roads behind it have more four- and five-star resorts and a growing number of branded residences that sell hotel-style nights; mid-range hotels line the Bang Tao beach road and Cherngtalay village, and a few hostels exist near Boat Avenue.
The district therefore has the deepest four-star sample on the island, which makes its median one of the more reliable numbers in the table. It is not a budget beach: the three-star sample is small and the cheap rooms are in Cherngtalay village, a scooter ride from the sand. The villa market is the largest on Phuket — gated estates of two- to six-bedroom pool villas behind Laguna, on the Layan road and inland towards the Heroines' Monument — and condominiums around Boat Avenue and Cherngtalay supply most one- and two-bedroom monthly rentals. For hotel nights Bang Tao is the resort-complex option; for longer stays it is the villa option.
The beach and the sea
Eight kilometres of gently sloping sand whose character shifts from beach clubs at the Surin end to an empty middle and fishing boats near Layan; clear water in the high season. The wet-season shore-break is moderate and generally kinder than Surin or Karon, with the northern end the most sheltered and red flags on rough days.
