What the hotels in Patong are like

Patong holds more hotel rooms than any other part of the island, and the whole ladder is represented within a few streets. The cheapest beds are in the lanes behind Bangla Road and along Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Road: guesthouses, hostels and small hotels that live off walk-in trade and short stays. The three-star tier is the backbone of the town centre, block after block of mid-sized hotels a few minutes on foot from the sand. Four-star resorts take the beach road itself, the Holiday Inn Resort being the obvious example with the sea across the street.

The five-star addresses have mostly been pushed to the edges, where there is space and a view: the Amari on the southern headland, the Diamond Cliff and a run of hillside resorts up towards Kalim in the north. For a booking this means that "Patong" covers everything from a fan room to a cliffside suite, and the star rating says more about location than usual — three stars is the middle of town, five stars is a headland with a shuttle. Villas barely exist inside Patong; the condominium towers behind Jungceylon and on the Kathu side of the hill are where monthly rentals come from, not the hotel stock.

The beach and the sea

Patong Beach is wide and gently shelving, calm from November to April, with loungers and jet-skis in the middle section and quieter sand at the Kalim and southern ends. From May to October the swell builds, Kalim becomes a surf break and red flags close the beach on rough days.

Ratings are declared by the hotels themselves, so read the ranges before the medians.
