What the hotels in Kamala are like

Kamala runs two hotel markets side by side. On the flat behind the beach and along the main road are the family resorts — three- and four-star properties such as Novotel Phuket Kamala Beach and Sunwing Kamala Beach, built for Scandinavian and German families with children and priced accordingly. The large five-star addresses are the InterContinental Phuket Resort on the beach and the Hyatt Regency on the headland.

South of the beach the road climbs into Millionaires' Mile, a cliffside stretch of villas and a few very small luxury hotels, of which Paresa is the best known; this is where the five-star range stretches upwards, and why the top of that range sits far above its median. Between those two markets there is little: Kamala has few hostels, and the budget traveller is in a village guesthouse rather than a dorm. Villas for rent cluster on the headland and on the hills behind the village; condominiums are fewer than in Patong or Karon, though several mid-rise projects on the main road have added supply in recent years. For a family that wants a calm beach, a resort pool and a shorter transfer than Kata, Kamala is the usual compromise.

The beach and the sea

Two kilometres of sand, wider at the beach-club end and narrower towards the pier, with calm, clear high-season water and a reef a short swim off the southern end. Wet-season surf is smaller than at Kata or Karon, but rips are real and red flags go up on rough days; Laem Sing cove over the northern headland is the sheltered alternative.
