Phuket Old Town is the part of the island that was here before tourism: the tin-mining port built by Hokkien Chinese merchants in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with its Sino-Portuguese shophouses along Thalang, Dibuk, Krabi and Yaowarat Roads, its Chinese shrines and its Peranakan food. A guided walk is the fastest way to read it, and a food walk is the fastest way to eat it; the index measures both under one segment — the standard small-group tour of two to four hours, private versions excluded.
The walking version covers the streets, the shrines and one or two mansions, with a coffee or a snack along the way. The food version replaces sightseeing time with four to eight tastings — Hokkien fried noodles, o-tao oyster omelette, dim sum, roti with curry, kopi in a shophouse coffee bar — and is priced above the plain walk because the food is included. Timing matters more than season. The old town is on the sheltered east side, so the monsoon means showers rather than cancellations, and it is a natural choice for a rainy day. Heat is the real factor: a 09:00 or a 16:00 start is comfortable, 13:00 in April is not. Sunday afternoon brings the Lard Yai walking-street market to Thalang Road, and for nine days in the ninth lunar month — usually late September or October — the Vegetarian Festival fills the streets with processions from the Chinese shrines, which is the best and the most crowded time to be there.
The cost sits in the middle of the index: cheaper than a full sea day, dearer than the Big Buddha half-day because a guide's time is the product rather than a bus seat.
