Anyone who wants to see elephants without riding them; families with children old enough to follow a walk (most sanctuaries admit from 3–5 years); travellers in the monsoon looking for a land day. The elephant sanctuary half-day is the one land tour in this index that costs more than a full day at sea, and the reason is honest: the ticket pays for the herd. A retired working elephant eats roughly a tenth of its weight a day, and the ethical sanctuaries — observation-only or no-riding — run on visitor fees rather than on performances. The index measures the standard half-day visit: three to four hours at the sanctuary, a shared minivan from the main hotel areas, feeding, a walk with the herd and a Thai vegetarian meal.

Within the ethical tier there are two levels — observation-only sanctuaries, where visitors watch and feed but do not touch or bathe the elephants, and no-riding sanctuaries, where feeding and a mud bath are part of the programme. The stricter kind costs the same or more and is the one welfare organisations recommend; whether that matters is a personal decision, but it should be an informed one.
Because the visit is inland and under cover for part of the time, it runs all year and is the natural monsoon-day choice alongside the Phang Nga Bay trip. The wet months mean mud, which the elephants like and visitors should dress for; sanctuaries lend rubber boots. Morning sessions are cooler in the hot months and sell out first in high season.
