The elephant sanctuary half-day is the one land tour in this index that costs more than a full day at sea, and the reason is honest: the ticket pays for the herd. A retired working elephant eats roughly a tenth of its weight a day, and the ethical sanctuaries — observation-only or no-riding — run on visitor fees rather than on performances. Because the visit is inland and under cover for part of the time, it runs all year and is the natural monsoon-day choice alongside the Phang Nga Bay trip. The wet months mean mud, which the elephants like and visitors should dress for; sanctuaries lend rubber boots. Morning sessions are cooler in the hot months and sell out first in high season.
