Short answer

Ao Yon Beach (Cape Panwa) is 500 m of sand in Panwa, sheltered from the south-west monsoon, without lifeguards, reached by road free of charge. Best months to swim: all year; rip-current risk from May to October: low. Good for swimming, children, quiet.

Ao Yon is the public beach of the Panwa cape and, uniquely among the island's beaches of any size, swimmable through the wet season: it faces east, away from the south-west monsoon, and the whole island shelters it. Half a kilometre of sand fringed with trees, calm shallow water that drops off slowly, a few Thai restaurants, kayaks for rent and the yachts of the nearby marina moored in the bay. The water is greener and less clear than the west coast's and there is some boat traffic; snorkelling is modest. There are no lifeguards and no red-flag days to speak of. Twenty minutes from Phuket Town, it is where families staying in town swim, and the fallback for anyone on the island in August.

Island rough-sea days, median per calendar month, 2015–2025; the beach's best months in the figure colour · Open-Meteo (ERA5), 2015–2026

The table above applies the island's marine normals to this beach: median rough-sea days per calendar month from Open-Meteo (ERA5), 2015–2026 (2015–2025, marine fields from 2022), damped by the beach's shelter, and median sea-surface temperature from Open-Meteo Marine API (2022-12–2026-08). Calm months here: all year. No month is rough here on the model. The sea is 28.8–31.0 °C as monthly medians, warm in every month; temperature never decides a swim on Phuket, the sea state does. The best-months row is the beach's own calm season and is derived, not opinion.

Safety

Ao Yon Beach (Cape Panwa) is sheltered from the south-west monsoon, which decides its year. The island sits between the beach and the south-west monsoon, so the marine reanalysis's rough-sea months (May–September, island-wide) barely register here: the beach is swimmable in every month and the rip-current risk is low even in the wet season. The trade-offs of a sheltered beach are greener, less clear water, boat traffic and shallows at low tide. Phuket records around 30–40 drownings a year, most of them between May and October on the open west coast; the hospitals catalogue names the nearest 24-hour emergency room from Panwa, and the emergency number is 1669. Jellyfish drift in after storms on the whole coast; vinegar is the first aid.
