The lie of the land

Cape Panwa is the peninsula that hangs off the south-east corner of the island below Phuket Town, and it is the only district in this index that faces east across the water towards Phang Nga Bay and the islands rather than west into the Andaman. The road down the cape passes rubber plantations, a Thai navy base, the Phuket Aquarium at the tip and a few resorts tucked into their own coves; the interior is quiet and green, and the sunset is behind you.

It suits couples who want a resort with its own beach and a view of islands, families who want calm, year-round swimming, and long-stayers who like being fifteen minutes from Phuket Town's food and hospitals without living in the town. Sailors know it for the Ao Yon anchorage. It suits anyone who wants a west-coast beach day or a bar strip only if they are willing to drive.

Beach and sea

Panwa's beaches are small coves rather than a strip. Ao Yon, on the western side of the cape, is the district's public beach: a sheltered bay with calm, shallow water, a fringe of trees and a few restaurants, and, uniquely on Phuket, swimmable through the wet season because it faces away from the south-west monsoon. Khao Khad, above it, is a viewpoint tower with the whole eastern bay laid out below. The resort coves on the eastern side are effectively private to their hotels.

The water on the east coast is calmer but less clear than the west's, with a greener tint and more boat traffic; snorkelling is modest, and the real reef diving is a boat ride away. The Phuket Aquarium at the tip of the cape, run by the marine research centre, is the island's rainy-afternoon standby for families. There are no red-flag days to speak of here; the trade-off is that the sea is a working sea.

Where to stay

Panwa's hotels are few and mostly upmarket: Sri Panwa, the pool-villa resort on the tip of the cape whose bar is the island's best-known sunset-cocktail address, Cape Panwa Hotel, the original resort on its own beach, Amatara Welleisure Resort with its wellness programme and Bandara Phuket further up the cape. There are a couple of mid-range hotels near Ao Yon and almost nothing at the budget end.

Villas are on the hills along the cape road and above Ao Yon, many with sea views over the eastern bay, and some large estates at the tip. Condominiums are a small but growing supply along the road from town, including branded residences attached to the resorts. Hostels do not exist on the cape; the nearest are in Phuket Town.

Eating out

The cape's dining is the resort restaurants, Sri Panwa's Baba group in particular, and a handful of Thai seafood places near Ao Yon and along the cape road where the fishing boats land. The Ao Yon beach restaurants are the district's everyday choice: fish by weight, a view of the bay, no dress code.

The advantage of Panwa is that Phuket Town, the island's food capital, is fifteen to twenty minutes away: the Old Town's shophouse restaurants and cafés, the Sunday walking street and the weekend Naka Market are all in easy reach for dinner. Most residents eat in town at least as often as on the cape.

Getting around

Panwa is forty kilometres from the airport by road, which runs through Phuket Town, and takes about an hour, more at rush hour. Grab and Bolt work, though drivers are fewer on the cape and pickups can take longer. There is no Smart Bus; songthaews run from Phuket Town's market to the cape a few times a day.

The cape road is quiet and pleasant to ride, with hills. A scooter or a car is necessary: Ao Yon to the tip is a ten-minute ride, Phuket Town fifteen minutes, and the west-coast beaches forty-five minutes to an hour. Yacht owners use the Ao Yon anchorage and the deep-sea port at Ao Makham on the western shore.

Staying a month or longer

Panwa's monthly market is villas with eastern sea views on the cape road and above Ao Yon, some resort-managed residences that rent by the month, and a small stock of condominiums and townhouses along the road from town. It is priced below the west coast's premium districts for equivalent houses because it lacks a west-coast beach, and it attracts renters who work in Phuket Town or want its schools and hospitals within twenty minutes.

Who stays: families with children at HeadStart or BISP, sailors and yacht crews based at Ao Yon, and couples who want a quiet house with a view and the town's food nearby. If a month or longer here appeals, the form below goes to VillaCarte; say whether you need the cape itself or would consider the Koh Kaew and town side, where supply is larger.

The honest downsides

The east coast is not the west coast: the water is calmer and greener rather than clear and blue, the beaches are small and the sunset is behind the hill. Anyone who wants the classic Andaman beach will be driving forty-five minutes each way. Nightlife is a resort bar, and the cape road empties after dark.

Grab drivers are fewer, the road to town crosses the Phuket Town traffic, and the navy base and the deep-sea port are working neighbours. Supply of everything is thin: hotels, restaurants, rentals. Panwa is a good choice only if the quiet and the town's proximity are what you are buying.
