Germans have been Phuket's steadiest European market since the 1980s, when the first charter flights landed and the first bakeries opened in Karon. The pattern has held: two or three weeks in the winter, a beach hotel in Karon, Kata or Kamala, a day trip to Phang Nga Bay, and a return the following year. Around that core has grown a resident community of retirees and small-business owners in the south and, more recently, remote workers on the Destination Thailand Visa in Bang Tao and Phuket Town.

As of September 2026, Condor is the nonstop carrier from Germany to Phuket: daily from Frankfurt in the winter schedule (1 November to 30 April) and several times a week in summer, on Airbus A330neo aircraft, with a flight time of about ten and a quarter hours outbound and twelve and a quarter on the way back against the wind. Condor also sells Phuket from Munich and other German cities via Frankfurt. Lufthansa and Thai Airways fly Frankfurt and Munich to Bangkok daily and connect to Phuket there.

One-stop routes through the Gulf are the widest choice: Qatar Airways via Doha, Emirates via Dubai and Etihad via Abu Dhabi from Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Berlin, with total journey times of fourteen to sixteen hours; Turkish Airlines via Istanbul and Singapore Airlines via Singapore add options. Winter frequencies are highest; summer sees cuts on all routes. Check the schedule for the month you are flying.

Entry and visa

German passport holders can enter Thailand without a visa for tourism. Checked 4 September 2026: from 15 September 2026 the visa-free stay is 30 days per entry, replacing the 60 days that applied from mid-2024. Germany is on the new list of 60 countries and territories published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026. A single extension of up to 30 days can be requested at an immigration office for a fee, at the officer's discretion. Anyone who arrived before 15 September keeps the stay stamped in on entry.

Every traveller must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within three days before arrival; it is free and immigration expects the QR code on your phone. For longer stays, the Destination Thailand Visa for remote workers, the retirement visa for the over-fifties and the tourist visa through the Thai e-Visa system are the routes, all applied for before travelling. The planned Electronic Travel Authorisation for visa-exempt visitors had not launched as of the check date. Rules change; confirm on the Auswärtiges Amt travel advice or the Thai e-Visa site before you fly.

Money

The Thai baht is the only currency you will use, and euros change easily on the island at rates close to interbank; the exchange booths in the towns beat the airport and the hotels, and large notes get a slightly better rate than small ones. The German girocard, on its own, often does not work in Thailand: you need a Visa or Mastercard, credit or debit, and the direct banks and fintech cards without foreign-transaction fees save real money over three weeks.

Thai ATMs add a fixed 220 baht per withdrawal on foreign cards, so withdraw larger sums less often, and always decline the machine's offer to convert to euros. PromptPay QR codes are on every counter but need a Thai bank account; carry cash for markets, taxis, boats and street food. Tipping is lighter than in Germany: round up taxi fares, leave small change at restaurants, and give a little to hotel and massage staff. Some hotels add a service charge that covers it.

When to go

The German calendar fits Phuket well. The Christmas holidays are the island's peak fortnight, with the best sea and the highest prices, booked by early autumn; the February winter break (where it exists) and the Easter holidays fall inside the dry season, warm and calm, with Songkran, the water festival, in mid-April. The autumn break in October catches the tail of the rainy season, when the sea is beginning to settle and the rates have not yet risen.

The summer holidays, from late June to early September depending on the state, are Phuket's monsoon: warm, with afternoon storms, red flags on the west-coast beaches on many days, and Phi Phi and Similan boats cancelled or restricted. Families who travel then choose the east coast, Phuket Town or a resort with big pools and treat a calm beach day as a bonus. For retirees and remote workers, November to March is the season, and arriving in early November gets the best choice of villas.

Practical differences

Thailand runs on 220 volts, and its sockets take the two-pin European plug, so German chargers fit without an adapter; only the earthed Schuko plug sits loosely in some sockets, and a small adapter fixes that. Driving is on the left, the opposite of Germany, which catches scooter riders at every junction on the first day; an international driving permit is required, and the German licence alone will not satisfy the police or an insurer. Travel insurance that covers scooters is not the default.

Buy a Thai SIM at the airport or use an eSIM; German roaming in Thailand is expensive. Tap water is not for drinking. Temples require covered shoulders and knees and shoes off; the Big Buddha and Wat Chalong provide sarongs. Nude and topless sunbathing is illegal and taken seriously. Private hospitals in Phuket are excellent and want an insurance card or deposit for anything beyond emergencies. Alcohol is not sold in shops between 2pm and 5pm. Directness, which works in Germany, reads as rudeness here; a smile and a slower pace get better results.

Where visitors from here stay

By observation, German visitors have made Karon and Kata theirs for forty years: the beach hotels, the bakeries, the schnitzel restaurants and the German-language tour desks are all there, with Kamala and the family resorts of the north-west (Sunwing and its neighbours) as the family alternative and Patong for those who want the nightlife. Bang Tao and Layan take the luxury and villa end, and Mai Khao's big resorts the all-inclusive market.

The long-stay pattern is the south and the north-west: Rawai, Nai Harn and Chalong have a large German-speaking resident community of retirees and small-business owners, and Bang Tao and Phuket Town have the remote workers.
