Short answer. December is the start of Phuket’s best weather and its busiest weeks. The climate normals (2015–2025) put the month at 113 mm of rain on 16 days, 298 h of sunshine and a calm sea on the west coast. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports counted 1,377,958 visitors in December 2024, and Phuket airport handled 1,782,653 passengers that month. The index’s first observation (October 2026) is a low-season month, so a four-star night island-wide is $107 today; the December premium is something the index will measure, not guess.
What December looks like on the numbers
December is when the north-east monsoon is fully established. It blows from the land across the Andaman Sea, which means dry air, long clear spells and a west coast that is calm for most of the month. The word “most” matters: the transition from the wet season is not a switch, and the first days of December can still carry a shower or two. The numbers below are the median of eleven Decembers (2015–2025) from the Open-Meteo ERA5 reanalysis for the west-coast grid point, so they describe a typical month rather than a forecast. Wave and rough-sea fields start in 2022 and carry a smaller sample.
| Measure | November | December | January |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rain | 270 mm | 113 mm | 37 mm |
| Rain days | 27 | 16 | 10 |
| Heavy-rain days | 3 | 1 | 0 |
| Sunshine | 260 h | 298 h | 329 h |
| Day max | 28.7 °C | 29.2 °C | 29.5 °C |
| Night min | 24.5 °C | 24.1 °C | 24.4 °C |
| Humidity | 87% | 83% | 79% |
| Sea state | calm | calm | calm |
| Rough-sea days | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Read across the row for rain and the shape is clear: the wet-season tail in November has far more water than December, and December settles toward the January level. The sunshine row is the one most visitors feel: more hours of direct sun means the beach days people book Phuket for. For a wider view of the whole calendar, the best time to visit page shows every month on one chart, and the monsoon season guide covers the months on the other side.
Rain in December: what “16 rain days” means
A rain day in these normals is a day with measurable precipitation, which includes a ten-minute shower at four in the morning. It is not a day lost. The better figure for planning is the heavy-rain day count, 1 in a normal December. Those are the days where a plan is genuinely at risk: a boat trip cancelled, a motorbike day abandoned, a road with standing water.
Two cautions. First, a median is the middle year, not a guarantee. Some Decembers in the record have been wetter than the normal, and a late-season depression crossing the Andaman can bring several grey days in a row. Second, the east side of the island and the west side do not behave identically on a given afternoon. If a day looks marginal, the practical response is to move the indoor plan (Old Town, a cooking class, a spa) and keep the beach for the dry window. The Old Town guide is built for that kind of swap.
Sea, swimming and flags
The sea is what separates December from the wet months. The normal December has 0 rough-sea days, and the typical wave height is 0.6 m. For comparison, a normal July has 13 rough-sea days. A rough day here is one where the wave height crosses 1.5 m, which is the same threshold the site’s today page uses for its flag estimate, so the month and the day do not contradict each other.
Practical points, none of which are data-dependent:
- Flags decide, not the calendar. A red flag on a December afternoon means the same as in August: stay out of the water.
- The sea surface temperature in December is a normal 29.0 °C, so water temperature is not the issue it is in some other tropical destinations.
- Sheltered bays remain calmer on the rare rough day. Rawai and Panwa face away from the open west-coast swell; the Rawai page covers the character of the south.
- Boat trips run most days. Cancellations in December are rarer than in the green season, but a cancelled trip is typically refunded or rebooked by the operator, so read the cancellation terms rather than assuming.
How crowded: visitors, occupancy and the airport
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports publishes monthly provincial figures. For December 2024, the count was 1,377,958 visitors, of which 1,085,328 were foreign. Hotel occupancy for the month was 85.3%. Compare that with the months on either side:
| Month (2024) | Visitors | Foreign visitors | Occupancy | Airport passengers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| October | 1,123,570 | 862,595 | 75.6% | 1,299,928 |
| November | 1,303,378 | 1,044,266 | 79.7% | 1,573,187 |
| December | 1,377,958 | 1,085,328 | 85.3% | 1,782,653 |
Where a cell shows “no published figure yet”, the source has not released that month, and the site does not fill the gap with an estimate. The Phuket airport (HKT) series from Airports of Thailand is complete for full years: in 2025 the airport handled 17,474,051 passengers, of which 62.0% were international. The peak month of the year was January 2025 (2.00 M). December is close to that peak, and the volume at the airport is the best single indicator of how many people are on the island at once. More on how to read these sources is in the tourism statistics guide and on the stats hub.
Who comes in December? The Ministry’s nationality table lists the largest markets by guest arrivals, and the top three for 2025 were Russia (17.3%), China (12.8%), India (10.2%). The mix shifts through the year: the winter months are strongest for the long-haul European and Russian-speaking markets escaping the cold, while the summer months lean toward Chinese and Indian visitors. If you want to see where a particular market peaks, the stats section has a page per country.
What December costs: the index view
A fair warning first, in the spirit of the index’s rules: the first observation (October 2026) falls in a low-season month, and each point carries a season tag. The index does not extrapolate. It cannot say today how much more a December night costs than the figures below, and this guide does not either. When the high-season observations arrive, the gap becomes a measured number and this page updates itself, because every price on it is a token.
What the index holds now, as the baseline to compare December against:
| Item | Latest median | Range (P25–P75) | Sample |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel, 3-star, per night, island-wide | $56 | $40–78 | 181 |
| Hotel, 4-star, per night, island-wide | $107 | $66–174 | 210 |
| Hotel, 5-star, per night, island-wide | $213 | $138–333 | 95 |
| Villa, 3-bed, per month, island-wide | $5,941 | $4,390–7,935 | 148 |
The exchange rate behind the dollar figures is 33.41 THB per USD (ECB, 16 October 2026). A cell that reads “no published figure yet” means fewer than five observations back it, and the index prints nothing rather than a guess. The full series, with a sparkline once there are two or more points, is on the hotel index, and villas are under villas.
Area by area
December demand does not hit every area equally. These are the latest four-star medians by area, again the October 2026 baseline:
| Area | 4-star per night | Sample | Distance to airport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patong | $72 | 12 | 32 km |
| Kata | $150 | 20 | 42 km |
| Bang Tao | $120 | 13 | 18 km |
| Rawai | $67 | 16 | 42 km |
The distance column matters in December in a way it does not in September. A taxi from the airport to Patong is 32 km on paper, but the late-December roads along Patong Hill and the beach road are slow, and the practical cost of a distant hotel is time as much as fare. Transfer prices from the index are covered in the airport transfer guide.
Where to stay in December
The area choice is more about character than about weather, because the west coast is calm along its whole length. The editorial profile of each area is on its page; a short comparison:
- Patong is the busiest and the most expensive in the evening sense: nightlife, traffic, the most choice. The Patong page lists what it is and is not.
- Kata and Karon are the family beach pair, with long sand and a calmer feel than Patong.
- Bang Tao has the resort-and-villa character of the north-west, with a wide beach and the largest villa stock outside the south.
- Rawai and Chalong are the south: less beach swimming, more local restaurants, and the boat piers.
- Phuket Town is the budget-and-culture base, well placed if the beach is not the point.
For a structured choice by trip type, use the where to stay guide. If your dates include Christmas and New Year, treat the last ten days of the month as a separate market: rooms in any area are scarcer, minimum-stay rules are common, and cancellation terms are stricter. That is a mechanism, not a measured number, and the index will tell us how big the effect is once it has the observations.
Planning around the December peak
A few mechanics hold up whatever the year.
Book in order of scarcity. Flights and the specific villa or beachfront room go first; a mid-range hotel in a back street goes last. If your dates are fixed, lock the scarce item first and fit the rest around it.
Read cancellation terms, not just prices. In high season the free-cancellation window is often shorter. A slightly higher rate with free cancellation is a hedge against a changed plan, and the difference is visible in the booking terms.
Do the transport sums. A rental car or scooter is the usual way to get around, and December traffic makes the car less attractive than usual on the west coast. The scooter guide and car rental guide explain the costs and the paperwork. At the latest observation, a scooter day is $9 and a car day $24.
Tours. Popular day trips fill up in December. The index tracks eight tour types; the Phi Phi day trip is at $63 per person and the James Bond Island trip at $52 at the latest observation. The Similan Islands, closed in the wet season, reopen in the dry months, and the Similan day trip is quoted at $76 when it has enough observations to publish.
Money. Convert at the day’s rate rather than at a hotel desk: the reference rate used on this site is 33.41 THB per USD (ECB, 16 October 2026). Daily budgets in the index are in US dollars, and the trip cost calculator turns them into a trip estimate, below.

December events and the calendar
December and the turn of the year are an event-heavy period on the island, and the site keeps a dated list on the events calendar. Event dates move from year to year and some, such as those tied to the lunar calendar, are approximate, so this guide does not repeat them: check the calendar for the year you are travelling. What can be said without a date is the effect: crowds concentrate around the end-of-year holidays, restaurants and beach clubs run set menus and minimum spends on the biggest nights, and the cost of a given evening can be higher than the same evening a fortnight earlier. The index measures hotels, villas, tours, transfers and daily budgets, not the cost of a New Year’s Eve table, so no figure is offered for that.
A December checklist
- Dates fixed? Book the scarce item first (villa, beachfront room, flights), then the rest.
- Sea plans? Check the flag on the day; December is calm in the normals, but not every day.
- Rain backup? Keep one indoor option per day, especially in the first week.
- Transport? Allow extra time for the west-coast roads; the airport is 32 km from Patong but the journey time depends on the hour.
- Budget? Use the median and the range in the index tables, not a single figure, and run the numbers in the trip cost tool.
- Documents? Entry rules change; the visa rules guide gives the position with its date.
How the data on this page works
Nothing on this page is typed by hand if the data covers it. Climate numbers are tokens resolved from the climate normals; visitor and occupancy figures are tokens from the Ministry’s monthly tables; airport figures come from the Airports of Thailand reports; prices come from the index’s latest point for each series, always with the month they were observed. When the index adds a December observation, the tokens move and the page’s numbers move with them. That is also why the page says so little about the size of the December premium: the data to say it does not exist yet, and the rule is that null is better than a guess. The methodology page describes how each series is collected and the sample thresholds that decide whether a median is published.
Two limits are worth stating plainly. The climate figures are reanalysis for one west-coast grid point, so they describe the west coast rather than every corner of the island. And the Ministry’s provincial figures count visitors to the province, not the number sleeping in any one area, so a busy month in the statistics does not translate directly into a crowded beach.
FAQ
Is December a good time to visit Phuket?
On the weather, yes: the climate normals (2015–2025) give 113 mm of rain on 16 days, 298 h of sunshine and a calm west-coast sea. The trade-off is crowds and price: the island is in high season, so book early.
How much rain does Phuket get in December?
The normal December has 113 mm of rain across 16 days with measurable rain, of which 1 are heavy-rain days. November is the transition month, with 270 mm.
How hot is Phuket in December?
Daytime highs are around 29.2 °C and nights around 24.1 °C, with 83% humidity. Sea surface temperature is a normal 29.0 °C.
Is the sea calm enough to swim in December?
Usually yes. The normals show 0 rough-sea days in December against 13 in July, and a typical wave height of 0.6 m. Flags still decide: swim only on green.
How crowded is Phuket in December?
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports counted 1,377,958 visitors in December 2024, with hotel occupancy of 85.3% in December 2024. Airport traffic was 1,782,653 passengers that month.
How much is a hotel in Phuket in December?
The index holds $107 per night for a four-star island-wide at its latest observation (October 2026, a low-season month). December prices will be measured by the index itself when the high-season revisions arrive; no December figure is quoted before then.
Should I book Phuket accommodation early for December?
Yes, particularly for the last two weeks, when the holiday peak puts the heaviest load on the island. Beachfront and villa stock is the first to go; the index will show the size of the gap once December observations are in.
