Short answer. Choose Phuket if you want choice: fifteen areas from party strip to quiet villa coast, the biggest airport on the Andaman side, the widest range of hotels and the most day trips. Choose Krabi if scenery and a slower, simpler base matter more than range. The Phuket Travel Price Index covers Phuket only, so the money side of this guide quotes Phuket’s own numbers and leaves Krabi’s to a quote on your dates: the island-wide median hotel night is $78 (October 2026, n = 628), a 4-star is $107 and a Phi Phi day trip is $63 per person. The airport tells the connectivity story: Phuket handled 17.47 M passengers in 2025.
What this comparison can and cannot say
Phuket Travels is a price index for one island. Every figure on this page that carries a price, a rainfall total or a passenger count is read from the repository’s own data and re-measured on the 1st and the 15th of the month. There is no Krabi series in that data, and the rule on this site is that a missing number stays missing: no estimates, no “roughly the same as the neighbours”. So this guide does something narrower and more honest than most “versus” articles. It prices the Phuket side precisely, describes the structural differences between the two destinations that do not depend on a number, and tells you which questions to ask a Krabi quote so the comparison is like for like.
Anything about Krabi that is not a number comes from general knowledge and is kept deliberately conservative. Where a fact could change, such as a ferry timetable or a road project, the sentence says how to check it instead of asserting it.
The two destinations in one paragraph each
Phuket is Thailand’s largest island, joined to the mainland by a bridge, with a provincial capital (Phuket Town) that is a real city, an international airport on the north tip, and a west coast of beaches that each have a distinct personality. The index tracks fifteen areas, and the difference between them is bigger than the difference between Phuket and most other beach destinations: Patong is a nightlife town, Kata is a family bay, Bang Tao is a resort strip, and Rawai is a southern fishing-village-turned-expat-base. Our where to stay by area guide goes through them.
Krabi is a province on the mainland coast. Its best-known bases are Ao Nang, the beach town that works as the hub, and Railay, the headland reachable only by boat, with the islands of Phi Phi and Lanta in the same orbit. The landscape is the selling point: limestone karsts rising from the sea, mangroves and caves. It has fewer areas and fewer kinds of stay, and a smaller commercial centre. That is attractive to some travellers and a limitation for others.
Choice and scale
The simplest way to see the difference is the number of decisions the destination asks of you. In Phuket the area is the decision, and it is the one that matters most, because the island is large and the traffic on the single main road makes it slow to cross. The island’s areas sit between 4 km (Nai Yang) and 42 km (Rawai) from the airport, and the road time grows faster than the distance. A hotel in the wrong area means a long evening ride back from dinner.
Krabi concentrates more of its tourism in a few bases, so the choice is smaller: you are mostly choosing between the beach town, the boat-access headland and an island. For a first-time visitor that is a benefit, not a defect. Fewer branches means fewer ways to book the wrong place.
Phuket’s scale does, however, bring things that a smaller destination cannot support at the same depth: a wide hotel market (the index counts 628 usable hotel observations island-wide for October 2026), hospitals with international accreditation, long-stay rental markets, big supermarkets, and a calendar of events. If your plan includes any of them, Phuket wins by default. The Phuket with kids guide and the long-stay cost of living guide show where that depth matters.
What the Phuket index says about cost
Here is the Phuket side of the ledger, as measured for October 2026. Treat it as the half of the comparison that is fully sourced.
| What | Phuket island-wide median | Range (P25–P75) | Sample |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel night, 3-star | $56 | $40–78 | n = 181 |
| Hotel night, 4-star | $107 | $66–174 | n = 210 |
| Hotel night, 5-star | $213 | $138–333 | n = 95 |
| Villa, 3-bed, per month | $5,941 | $4,390–7,935 | n = 148 |
Two cautions apply. First, these are medians across the island, and the spread between areas is wide: the hotel index shows each area separately. Second, the October 2026 revision sits in the low season, when hotel prices are at their lowest of the year. A comparison made against a Krabi quote taken in January would not be like for like, and the index’s season field exists for that reason.
How to make the Krabi side comparable
Because we cannot supply a Krabi median, here is the checklist that makes a quote comparable to the Phuket numbers above:
- the same star class, because “4-star” means different things in different booking platforms;
- the same month, since both destinations swing with the monsoon;
- the same room basis: a night for the room, taxes and service charge included, breakfast stated;
- the same stay length, because villa and long-stay rates drop with the length of the stay;
- the same area type: a beachfront resort in one place and a town hotel in the other will mislead the comparison.
With those five fixed, a single quote on each side tells you more than any published average.
Day trips and the islands
Both destinations sell the same marquee excursions, because the Andaman Sea’s famous islands are within reach of each. The Phuket index prices eight tour segments island-wide, and a few of them are the ones travellers weigh when comparing destinations:
| Excursion from Phuket | Median per person | Range | Sample |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phi Phi | $63 | $43–91 | n = 6 |
| James Bond Island | $52 | $35–109 | n = 12 |
| Similan Islands | $76 | $67–120 | n = 6 |
| Coral Island | $39 | $33–60 | n = 7 |
| Sunset cruise | $60 | $36–88 | n = 9 |
The point for a Phuket-versus-Krabi decision is not the price of any single tour. It is that the headline sights are reachable from both, and that a Phuket base gives more variety of departure points and boat types, while a Krabi base shortens the boat ride to some of the limestone scenery. If your whole trip is organised around a particular island, look at which side is closer to it and at which side the operators run more departures in your month; that is a question for the operator, and the answer changes with the season.
The tours index lists all eight segments, and the monsoon season guide explains why boat days get cancelled.
Getting there: the airport decides more than you think
For many itineraries the choice is made before the beach. Phuket International Airport handled 17.47 M passengers in 2025, of which 10.84 M were international, 62.0% of the total. Against 2019 the airport stands at 96.4%. The busiest month in the series is January 2025 (2.00 M).
What that means in practice is the number of routes. Large airports attract more direct long-haul and regional flights, and that usually means shorter connections and often lower fares. If you are flying from outside Asia, check both airports’ routes for your dates; if a direct or one-stop option into Phuket exists and Krabi needs an extra change, the saved time will outweigh most hotel price differences.
Once you land in Phuket, the ground leg depends on the area, and the transfer index prices it. Island-wide figures do not exist for transfers, because they depend on destination, so look up the route: a taxi counter fare to Patong is $24 and to Kata $29 per car in October 2026; the full table is in the airport transfer guide. A transfer between the two destinations is a different problem, covered below.
Weather: the same sea, the same monsoon
Phuket and Krabi face the same sea and share the same monsoon logic. The south-west monsoon brings the wet season and rougher seas to the Andaman coast, and the cooler, drier months fall at the turn of the year. So the weather is rarely a reason to prefer one over the other. It is a reason to choose the month carefully, whichever you pick.
The Phuket normals below come from Open-Meteo’s ERA5 reanalysis for 2015–2025 at a west-coast point:
| Month | Rain | Rain days | Sunshine | Daily high | Sea state |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 37 mm | 10 | 329 h | 29.5 °C | calm |
| March | 73 mm | 14 | 343 h | 31.7 °C | calm |
| May | 343 mm | 28 | 298 h | 29.8 °C | swell |
| July | 241 mm | 24 | 279 h | 29.2 °C | rough |
| September | 309 mm | 25 | 248 h | 28.7 °C | rough |
| November | 270 mm | 27 | 260 h | 28.7 °C | calm |
The driest month is February, the wettest May, and the sunniest March. Sea conditions are calmest in January and roughest in July. If a boat day is the centre of your trip, the sea-state column matters more than the rainfall column: a rain shower is an afternoon, a rough sea is a cancelled departure. The full table, with every month, is on best time to visit Phuket.
One real difference is exposure. Phuket’s west coast faces the open sea and takes the swell directly in the wet season, which is why the red-flag beaches there are not safe to swim from in that period. Mainland and island bases that sit behind headlands or among islands can feel more sheltered on the same day. Whether a particular Krabi beach is sheltered is a local question; ask your hotel for the current conditions rather than assuming.
Crowds and seasons
Phuket publishes more tourism data than most places, and it shows a strong seasonal shape. In 2025 the province counted 14.25 M visitors, of whom 75.4% were foreign, with hotel occupancy at 76.3% and an average length of stay of 4.9 days (Ministry of Tourism and Sports provincial statistics). The largest markets are Russia (17.3%), China (12.8%), India (10.2%).
Seasonality matters for the comparison because the busiest months are when both destinations are at their most expensive and their most crowded. In the high season Phuket’s size works for you: there are more beaches over which to spread out, though the road between them is slow. In the low season it works in the other direction: with more of the island quiet, there are bargains, and our hotel and villa series fall to their lowest levels.
If you are travelling in a shoulder month, the question to put to any hotel in either destination is the same: is the beach in front of the property swimmable this month, and are the boat trips running? A cheap room beside a red-flag beach is not a bargain.
Evenings, food and the kind of trip you want
Beyond price and weather, the choice is really about what you want your evenings to look like.
- Nightlife. Phuket has the largest and loudest on the Andaman coast, concentrated in Patong. If you want bars and late nights within walking distance, Phuket is the answer. Krabi’s evening scene is smaller and more relaxed.
- Restaurants and shopping. Phuket Town, Rawai and the west-coast resort strips give a wide choice, from street food to international restaurants; the daily budget index prices a street, mid-range and fine-dining day. The street-food day is $18 in Patong and the mid-range day is $39 (October 2026).
- Culture. Phuket Town’s old quarter, temples and festivals add a cultural layer that a pure beach base lacks. The events calendar lists what falls in your month.
- Quiet. Both offer quiet. In Phuket it is in the north and south (Bang Tao, Rawai and the villa coast), in Krabi it is on the island and headland bases.
Moving between the two
If you have the time, doing both is natural, because they are neighbours on the same coast. The practical details are mundane: a road transfer by minivan or private car, or a boat leg via the islands. Journey times and schedules change, so check the current timetable with the operator or your hotel when you book. A few sensible rules:
- Do not schedule a flight on the day of the move. Allow slack for road delays and boat timetables.
- Book the first night at the destination before you leave, not on arrival.
- Move once, not twice. A week split into two bases is workable; a week split into three is mostly packing.
- Keep the long boat days for the calmest part of your stay, using the sea-state column above.
A separate guide to road transfers beyond the island is on the content roadmap. Until it exists, ask your hotel for a quote for a private vehicle and compare it with the transfer figures in the airport transfer guide to judge whether it is reasonable.
Who should choose which
Choose Phuket if you want a choice of areas, a big and well-connected airport, a deep hotel market with clear price data, a city with hospitals and supermarkets nearby, a nightlife option, or a base for a long stay. It is also the better fit if the group is mixed (a family, a couple and a friend with different tastes) because the island can hold all of them in different areas.
Choose Krabi if you want the scenery to be the main event, you prefer a compact base, and you are comfortable that the range of accommodation and amenities is narrower. It suits travellers whose plan is boats, cliffs and quiet evenings.
Consider both if you have a week or more and want to see two different faces of the Andaman coast, accepting one travel day.
If you are still undecided, the useful exercise is to price a specific trip. The calculator below uses the Phuket medians for the area and season you choose, which gives you the Phuket half of the comparison; a single quote for the same dates in Krabi gives you the other.

A decision checklist
- Flights first. Compare the real fares and connections into each airport on your dates.
- Month next. If it is a wet-season month, check the sea-state column before booking any boat day.
- Pick the base type. Nightlife and variety point to Phuket, scenery and compactness to Krabi.
- Price like for like. Same star class, same month, taxes included, same stay length.
- Add the ground costs. Airport transfer, a scooter or a car, and day trips. The scooter rental guide and car rental guide cover the Phuket side.
- Decide on one base unless you have at least a week.
FAQ
Is Phuket or Krabi cheaper?
The Phuket index covers Phuket only, so it cannot rank the two. What it does show is the Phuket side of the comparison: the island-wide median hotel night is $78 ($46–150 across the middle half, n = 628, October 2026). Compare that with a like-for-like quote for Krabi on your own dates rather than trusting a blanket claim.
Which has the better beaches, Phuket or Krabi?
Phuket has more of them and a wider spread of character, from the long west-coast sweeps at Bang Tao and Kata to small coves in the south. Krabi’s draw is scenery: limestone cliffs, longtail boats and islands close to the shore. Both have sea that turns rough in the wet season; Phuket’s long-run west-coast sea state peaks in July.
Can I visit Phi Phi from both Phuket and Krabi?
Yes, Phi Phi is reachable from either side by boat. From Phuket, the index prices a Phi Phi day trip at $63 per person (range $43–91, n = 6, October 2026). Crossing times and schedules change by season, so check the operator on the day you book.
How easy is it to fly into Phuket compared with Krabi?
Phuket International Airport handled 17.47 M passengers in 2025, 62.0% of them international, which is why most long-haul itineraries land there. Krabi has its own airport, but the Phuket airport is the larger gateway and its direct flights can decide the choice by themselves.
When is the best time to visit Phuket versus Krabi?
Both sit on the Andaman coast and follow the same monsoon rhythm. Phuket’s driest month in the 2015–2025 normals is February and its wettest is May; the calmest sea is in January. Our best time to visit page has the full month-by-month table.
Should I split a trip between Phuket and Krabi?
Only with at least a week. Each move costs a day once you add checking out, the road or boat and settling in. For a short stay, a single base with day trips is usually better value than two bases.
