Mai Khao's hotels are almost all large four- and five-star resorts spaced far apart along eleven kilometres of national-park beach. JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa was the first and anchors the southern cluster near Turtle Village and the Splash Jungle water park; Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas, Sala Phuket and Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa are spread north along the beach road, with a Marriott vacation club alongside.
There is no resort town, no strip and no hostel; the few guesthouses and small hotels are in the villages inland, which is why the three-star sample is too small for a median and why the all-classes figure for Mai Khao sits so far above the island's. The four-star row is dominated by resort rates, and in the current snapshot its median is above the five-star one — a reminder that star ratings are self-declared and that a 'four-star' beach resort here is a different product from a four-star hotel in Patong. Villas exist in estates along the beach road and towards the Sarasin bridge, mostly mid-market houses; condominiums are rare. Mai Khao is for a resort holiday where the resort is the destination.
Wide, steep and exposed: even in high season the shore-break is stronger than on the sheltered bays to the south and the water is deep within a few metres, so this is not a paddling beach for toddlers. From May to October the surf is heavy and red flags are the norm; the resorts steer guests to the pools. Turtles nest from about November to February.
