The lie of the land

Nai Thon is a single bay between two forested headlands, about a kilometre of sand with a road behind it, a row of shophouse restaurants, two or three hotels and a scattering of villas on the slopes. It sits inside Sirinat National Park, which is why the headlands are still jungle and why nothing tall has been built. On a weekday morning in low season it is possible to have the whole beach to yourself, and even in January it never approaches busy.

It suits people who want the beach and only the beach: couples on a second or third Phuket trip, families with small children who like a calm bay, and anyone who wants to be close to the airport without being next to it. It is a poor choice for anyone who wants variety in the evenings, and a strange choice for a first-timer who has not seen the rest of the island.

Beach and sea

The beach is pale, fine sand with a moderate gradient, and the bay is sheltered enough that high-season swimming is clean and easy. Both headlands have rocks and coral in shallow water, and the snorkelling at the northern end is among the best you can reach from the sand on the west coast. Banana Beach, a tiny cove just south over the headland, is reached by a path and is the day-trip everyone staying here makes.

The wet season changes the bay: waves come straight in, the shore-break dumps and the rips run out along the rocks at both ends. Red flags go up and there are fewer lifeguards than on the resort beaches; treat a flagged day as a walking day. Jellyfish appear after storms, as everywhere on this coast.

Where to stay

Nai Thon has one of the island's most famous hotels and not much else. Trisara, on the headland to the south, is a villa resort with its own cove and a price to match. Pullman Phuket Arcadia Naithon Beach sits on the northern headland above the bay, and Naithonburi Beach Resort is the mid-range hotel on the beach road. Beyond those, a few guesthouses and small hotels occupy the shophouse row.

Villas are on the hills at both ends and inland along the road to Layan and the airport road; most are private-pool houses in small estates. Condominiums barely exist here, and hostels do not. The whole district might have a few hundred rooms.

Eating out

The restaurant row on the beach road is short but adequate: half a dozen Thai kitchens, a couple with seafood tanks, a bakery-café or two and a minimart. Prices are lower than in the resort districts because the customers are residents and hotel guests who walked out for a change of scene. That is the extent of it; for a night out you drive.

Nai Yang's beach restaurants are ten minutes north, Layan five minutes south and Boat Avenue in Bang Tao about fifteen minutes. The Thai-Muslim food of the airport villages, roti and massaman especially, is worth the short drive.

Getting around

Nai Thon is twelve kilometres from the airport, about twenty minutes by taxi, most of it on quiet roads. Grab and Bolt work, with the same slightly longer pickup times as the other northern beaches. There is no Smart Bus here; the nearest stop is on the airport road.

The beach road is walkable end to end in ten minutes. The roads out are hilly in both directions: the coast road south to Layan has hairpins and the road north to Nai Yang climbs over the headland. A car or a scooter is necessary for anything beyond the bay, and the airport-road junction is the only traffic you will meet.

Staying a month or longer

Monthly rentals here are villas on the hills and a small number of apartments and townhouses in the estates along the road inland. The market is thin, which cuts both ways: little choice, but a villa here in low season can be a real find, and several owners rent only by the season. Minimums of a month are standard.

Who stays: couples and families who want the airport ten minutes away for frequent trips, pilots and airline staff, and a small group of long-term residents who chose the quiet deliberately. If you are looking at a month or longer, the form below goes to VillaCarte; the earlier the dates, the better, because Nai Thon's stock is small.

The honest downsides

There is nothing to do but the beach, and after dark there is nothing at all. The restaurant row is small and closes early. There is no international school within twenty minutes and no supermarket bigger than a minimart. Grab drivers are fewer, and the hill roads are dark and steep.

The wet season can be lonely: several restaurants close for the low months, the sea is rough for weeks at a time and the bay has fewer rescue staff than the resort beaches. Aircraft on the northern approach are audible on some days, though far less than at Nai Yang or Mai Khao. For the money, Layan and Bang Tao offer more infrastructure; Nai Thon offers less of everything, on purpose.
