January is Phuket at its most reliable. The north-east monsoon holds the Andaman flat, the sky is clear enough that the Promthep sunset is a sunset rather than a cloud bank, and the humidity is the lowest it gets. Every island trip runs, the Similan park is open and busy, and the diving visibility north of the island is at its annual best.

The price picture has two halves. The first week is still the peak fortnight: Russian New Year runs to the eighth, European and Australian school holidays are ending, and villa rates hold at their December level. From roughly the second week the peak supplements come off and the rate card drops to ordinary high season, which is still the second-most expensive level of the year but a different order of money.

This is also the heart of the long-stay season. The Russian, Kazakh and European winter residents who rent by the month are all in place by January, which is why Bang Tao, Layan, Rawai and Kamala feel like neighbourhoods rather than resorts: school runs, gyms, Russian bakeries, co-working desks. Anything you want to rent for three months from January has been committed since the previous spring.
