The only public hospital on the west coast, opened in 1986 on Sai Nam Yen Road a few hundred metres behind Patong beach, with a 24-hour accident and emergency department, about 90 beds and the outpatient departments of a community hospital (paediatrics, orthopaedics, cardiology, obstetrics, dental and a travel-medicine clinic). It is where a scooter accident in Patong, Kamala or Karon is taken first; cases beyond its scope are transferred to Vachira or, for insured patients, to a private hospital over the hill.
