Chalong is the working end of the island — marina, dive pier, Big Buddha hill and the Muay Thai gyms of Soi Ta-iad — and its hotels are practical rather than resort-like. Guesthouses near the pier serve divers on early boats; a few mid-range hotels line Chao Fa Road; the gym-affiliated rooms on Soi Ta-iad are the standard for fighters on a training visa, a bed and a fan at a price to match. There is no five-star beach resort here and no beach to build one on, so the five-star row comes from a small sample of hotels that rate themselves that way, and the three- and four-star medians are among the lowest on Phuket.
The larger story is housing: Chalong has the island's biggest stock of ordinary houses and townhouses in estates off Chao Fa East and West and on the slopes towards the Big Buddha, plus condominium buildings along Chao Fa West and near the junction, and its monthly rents are the cheapest on the island. Book a hotel in Chalong for a dive trip, a training camp or a cheap base with Kata fifteen minutes over the hill.
Chalong Bay faces east, is shallow and muddy at low tide and busy with moored yachts; nobody swims here, but the pier is the departure point for most of Phuket's dive and island trips.
