Short answer. There are two ways to reach Phi Phi from Phuket: a scheduled ferry or speedboat that sells you a seat, and an organised day trip that sells you a whole day. The index prices the second: a full-day Phi Phi trip with hotel pickup, lunch and snorkel gear has a median of $63 per person, with a middle half of $43–91 (n = 6, October 2026). A plain ferry fare is not in the data, so no figure is given for it. Sea state matters more than price: the roughest month on the west coast is July and the calmest is January.

What this guide covers, and what it does not

Phuket Travels measures prices on Phuket. It does not hold a ferry timetable, a ferry fare series or a Krabi-side price list. The rule on this site is that a missing number stays missing, so the guide works from three things the data does contain: the price of a Phi Phi day trip, the price of reaching the Phuket Town side of the island from the airport, and the monthly sea state from the climate record. Everything else is mechanism: how a crossing works, what to ask, and what can go wrong.

Facts about piers, boat types and park rules come from general knowledge, checked on 14 October 2026 only in the sense that they are described conservatively. Timetables, fares and fees change by season and by operator, so each section says what to confirm rather than asserting a number. If you are comparing Phuket with the mainland coast as a whole, the Phuket vs Krabi guide covers the wider decision.

The two products people mean by “Phuket to Phi Phi”

The search term hides two quite different purchases.

A transfer. You want to move your luggage and yourself to Phi Phi Don, the main island, and sleep there. You buy a seat on a scheduled boat from a pier on the east side of Phuket, usually the one near Phuket Town, to the village pier on Phi Phi. You carry your bags, the boat takes as long as it takes, and you are on your own at the other end. This is the product for a night or two on the island.

A day trip. You want to see Phi Phi and be back in your own bed. An operator collects you from your hotel, drives you to a pier, puts you on a speedboat or a larger catamaran, stops at several bays for snorkelling and swimming, feeds you lunch and brings you back. The index tracks this product as the phi-phi tour segment: a full-day Phi Phi speedboat trip with pickup, lunch and snorkel gear.

The two cost different things and fail in different ways. A transfer is cheap and flexible but gives you no included stops. A day trip bundles a lot, so it is worth comparing the total rather than the headline.

What the index says about the day trip

What Median Middle half (P25–P75) Sample
Phi Phi full-day trip, per person $63 $43–91 n = 6
James Bond Island trip, per person $52 $35–109 n = 12
Similan Islands trip, per person $76 $67–120 n = 6
Coral Island trip, per person $39 $33–60 n = 7

All rows are for October 2026. The Phi Phi sample is small (n = 6), just above the n ≥ 5 publication threshold, so read the median as an anchor and the range as the honest part of the answer. The spread is wide because operators differ in boat type, group size, route and what lunch means.

Three things sit outside the price. First, the index definition notes that the national-park fee is usually paid on top of the trip price, so ask whether it is included before comparing two quotes. Second, the cheapest trips tend to run the largest groups, which matters most at the popular bays. Third, a day trip priced per person is a different animal from a private longtail or speedboat charter, which is priced per boat; the Phuket with kids guide explains why families often prefer the latter.

Getting to the pier

A ferry is only as convenient as the road to its pier. Phuket’s piers for the main crossings sit on the eastern and south-eastern side of the island, away from the west-coast beaches where most visitors stay. That is why a day trip’s pickup matters so much: the operator absorbs a long road leg that a self-arranged ferry puts on you.

The index does not price pier transfers, only airport transfers by area. The nearest honest proxy is the Phuket Town row, which describes the town side of the island. For October 2026:

Airport to Phuket Town Median per car Middle half Sample
Official taxi $21 $11–27 n = 7
Ride-hailing app $18 $12–27 n = 7
Minivan $41 $24–67 n = 7

These are airport fares to the town area, one way, per car. A pier is not the town centre, so treat them as a guide to scale. The airport transfer guide and the taxi and ride-hailing guide explain the difference between the fixed counter fare and an app estimate.

From the beach areas the picture changes. The airport is 32 km from Patong, 42 km from Kata and 42 km from Rawai, and the pier is on a different side of the island from all three. A road time that looks short on a map can be long in the morning, so a pier check-in of an hour before departure needs a hotel departure earlier than that. Ask the ferry company for its own check-in time and plan backwards from it.

A scooter can reach a pier, but parking and bag handling make it a poor fit; the scooter rental guide and the car rental guide cover those options, and a hire car at $24 per day (October 2026, n = 7) is the realistic self-drive route with luggage.

Ferry or speedboat?

The boats on this route fall roughly into two types, and the names vary by operator.

Ferry. Larger, slower, with seating inside and a deck. It is the usual choice for travellers with real luggage and for anyone prone to seasickness, because a bigger hull rides the swell better. It takes longer than a speedboat. Check the current duration on the ticket rather than relying on a figure from an article.

Speedboat. Smaller, faster, louder and bumpier. A speedboat is quick in calm water and uncomfortable in a swell. Day-trip operators use them because the time saved buys more stops. If you are booking a transfer rather than a trip, the speed is not worth much if the sea is up.

Rules of thumb that hold across seasons:

  • Sit toward the middle of the boat and low if the water is lively.
  • Keep passports, medication and electronics in a dry bag. Spray and splash are normal.
  • Do not schedule a flight on the same day as a return crossing from Phi Phi. A cancellation or delay is a risk you only pay once, and flights cost far more to rebook than a ferry.
  • Keep the receipt or booking code accessible; piers are crowded and staff move fast.

When the sea says no

The sea is what makes or breaks a crossing, and the data has something to say about it. The Open-Meteo marine series covers the west coast and starts in 2022, so it is short. These are monthly normals from the ERA5 and marine records on file.

Month Mean wave height Sea class Rough-sea days Rain days
January 0.5 m calm 0 10
February 0.5 m calm 0 7
March 0.5 m calm 0 14
April 0.5 m calm 0 25
May 1.0 m swell 4 28
June 1.3 m swell 8 22
July 1.5 m rough 13 24
August 1.3 m rough 9 25
September 1.4 m rough 12 25
October 1.0 m calm 2 28
November 0.6 m calm 0 27
December 0.6 m calm 0 16

A rough-sea day on this site is a day with waves above 1.5 m, the same threshold used in the best time to visit page, so the two never contradict each other. The calmest month on the record is January and the roughest is July.

What this means for a crossing:

  • Calm months. Crossings run to schedule, day trips visit all their bays and snorkelling visibility is at its best. This is also when prices and crowds tend to be at their highest, as the Phuket in December and Phuket in January guides show.
  • Monsoon months. Operators may shorten routes, skip exposed bays or cancel a departure. A cancelled day trip normally brings a refund or a rebooking, but a ferry you needed for a connection does not. The monsoon season guide has the rain side of this.
  • Shoulder months. Conditions change within a week. The mean hides the spread, so treat the table as a tendency.

Remember that this series is a reanalysis for a point off the west coast, not a measurement at the pier or in the strait between the islands. It describes the pattern, not tomorrow. For the actual day, rely on the operator’s go/no-go call and on the live sea reading on the Today page.

How to compare two quotes

A like-for-like comparison needs a short checklist, because the headline price hides most of the difference.

  1. Boat type and group size. A speedboat with a few dozen guests is a different day from a large catamaran.
  2. Pickup. Is hotel pickup included, and from which area? A west-coast pickup usually means an early start.
  3. Park fee. Is the national-park fee included or paid on the boat? The index definition says it is usually paid on top.
  4. Lunch and drinks. What is on the plate, and is water included?
  5. Stops and time at each. More stops with ten minutes each is not better than fewer stops with proper time.
  6. Cancellation. What happens if the sea is rough, and what if you cancel?
  7. Return. For a transfer, the last return departure and what happens if you miss it.

Write the answers down next to each price. A cheap quote with a fee and an extra pickup charge can end up level with a dearer one that includes both. The trip cost calculator lets you put the day trip into the same plan as your hotel and transfers.

Where to stay for an easy crossing

If your trip is built around Phi Phi, the base you choose changes how long the road leg takes.

  • Phuket Town sits closest to the east-coast piers and has the most local food, but no beach. It suits a short stay with an early boat.
  • Chalong and Rawai in the south are the bases for several marine departures and have a more relaxed pace, with guesthouses and villas.
  • Kata and Karon are family beaches on the west coast with a longer drive to any pier.
  • Patong has the widest choice of hotels, at the price of a longer morning pickup.

Hotel prices differ by area and season; the hotel price index lists the medians, and the island-wide hotel night is $78 (October 2026, n = 628). For the full area comparison see where to stay in Phuket by area.

Staying on Phi Phi, or going straight back

A day trip means you see the bays at the time of day when every other boat is there. Staying a night on Phi Phi Don changes that: the island is quieter after the last day boats leave and in the early morning. The trade-off is logistics. You carry your bags through a village with no cars, rooms are priced separately from the crossing, and your return is again at the mercy of the sea. If you stay, leave a buffer day before any flight and do not book your departure out of Phuket for the same afternoon as your return.

For a first visit with limited time, the day trip is the better-value format: one price covers transport, lunch and stops, and you sleep where your luggage already is. For a second visit, or for anyone who wants Phi Phi at dawn, a night on the island is worth the extra planning.

Practical checklist

  • Book the day trip or ferry with a clear cancellation policy, particularly outside the calm months.
  • Confirm the pier name, the check-in time and the departure time on the day before.
  • Take cash in baht for the park fee, pier fees and small purchases. Check the rate on 33.41 THB per USD (ECB, 16 October 2026).
  • Pack reef-safe sun cream, a hat, a dry bag and a change of clothes.
  • Eat lightly before the boat if the sea is not flat.
  • Photograph your booking confirmation; mobile signal at sea is patchy.

FAQ

How much does a Phi Phi day trip from Phuket cost?

The index median for a full-day Phi Phi speedboat trip with hotel pickup, lunch and snorkel gear is $63 per person (middle half $43–91, n = 6, October 2026). The national-park fee is usually paid on top.

Is the ferry cheaper than a tour?

A scheduled ferry sells a seat and nothing else, so it is normally the cheaper way to cross, but the index holds no ferry fare series and a number is not quoted here. Compare the posted fare with the tour price of $63 per person, and remember that a tour includes pickup, lunch and several stops.

Which month has the roughest sea between Phuket and Phi Phi?

On the long-run west-coast record the roughest month is July and the calmest is January. The marine series starts in 2022, so treat it as a short record, not a forecast.

How do I get to the pier from the airport?

The index prices airport transfers to the Phuket Town area at $21 by official taxi and $41 by minivan per car (October 2026). Those are fares to the town, not to a specific pier, so confirm the exact drop-off with the driver.

Can I do Phi Phi in a day from Patong or Kata?

Yes, most visitors do. Day-trip operators collect guests from west-coast hotels, which adds a road leg before the boat. From Patong the airport run alone is 32 km, so allow time for the coach to the pier.

Do boats run in the monsoon?

Usually some do, but cancellations and rougher crossings are more likely from May to October, when the monthly mean wave height reaches 1.3 m in August. Book flexible tickets and avoid a same-day connection to a flight.

Prices in this guide are live medians of the Phuket Travel Price Index, revision October 2026; they are re-rendered after every observation on the 1st and 15th, so the figures you see are the current ones, not the ones at the time of writing.
