The sunset cruise is the late-start sea day: boarding at Chalong Pier in mid-afternoon, a swim or a snorkel stop at Koh Lon or Coral Island in the soft light, dinner or snacks on deck as the boat rounds the south of the island, and the sun going down behind Promthep Cape watched from the water rather than from the crowded viewpoint above it. Three to five hours on the boat, back at the pier in the dark, at the hotel by about eight.
Three products share the name, and the index measures two of them. The dinner cruise on a motor big boat is the cheapest and the most social; the sailing catamaran with a swim stop is the one most listings mean and sits mid-range; the party boat with a DJ, an open bar and a crowd is a different evening and was excluded from the sample, as were private charters priced per boat. Alcohol is extra on most standard versions — the free-flow boats are usually the party product in disguise — while soft drinks, fruit, the meal and pickup from the south and west-coast areas are normally in.
Chalong Bay is sheltered and the route hugs the south coast, so the cruise runs all year, which makes it a better monsoon-season choice than any west-coast island trip. What the monsoon does change is the sunset: between May and October the sun often disappears into a cloud bank rather than the sea, and the swim stop and the dinner are the safer part of the promise. In the dry months the haze is low and the evening is the one the photographs show. Sunset at Phuket's latitude moves only about forty minutes across the year, from about ten past six in November to ten to seven in June, so the boarding time barely changes.
For a couple choosing one sea outing after Phi Phi, or for anyone who does not want a 07:00 pickup, this is the trip; for snorkelling the stop is too short and the Coral-and-Racha day is the better buy.
