Short answer. There is no single best beach in Phuket, but the data sorts them into clear groups. For the lowest hotel prices, the busiest evenings and the widest choice, look at Patong (median hotel night $54), Karon ($95) and Kata ($86). For a resort beach with space, Bang Tao ($109) and Kamala ($100) sit in the middle. For quiet and polish, Surin ($110) and Layan ($194) cost more. All figures are the island index medians for October 2026, all for a one-night stay booked about a month ahead. Every west-coast beach turns rough in July, so the month matters at least as much as the beach.
How this ranking works, and what it does not do
“Best beach” lists usually rank by photographs. This guide ranks by things that can be counted: what a night costs next to the sand, how far the beach is from the airport, how rough the sea tends to be in each month, and how much the beach town offers around it. Those are the inputs that decide whether a week goes well. Taste still matters, and a list of numbers cannot tell you whether you prefer a long empty strand or a short busy one. So the structure below is tiers, not a single league table. Within a tier the order is a matter of what you want from the trip.
Three rules apply throughout. First, every price is a median from the Phuket Travel Price Index, with its sample size where it matters, and every figure is dated October 2026. Second, a figure with too few observations is not quoted at all; where a beach has no published number, the text says so. Third, the hotel price is the price of staying in the beach’s area, assigned by coordinates, not a promise that the hotel is on the sand. A “Kata” median includes hotels a few minutes’ walk inland. It is a cost-of-staying measure, not a cost-of-the-front-row measure.
One more caution. A median hotel night depends on the mix of stock. A beach with many 3-star guesthouses will show a low median even if its 5-star resorts cost more than elsewhere, and the reverse is true of a beach with only large resorts. The tables below therefore show the all-segment median, and the sections for each beach point out when the mix is the real story.
The beaches at a glance
| Beach | Coast | Distance from the airport | Median hotel night, all segments | Middle half of prices |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Patong | west | 32 km | $54 | $37–88 |
| Karon | west | 40 km | $95 | $50–139 |
| Kata | west | 42 km | $86 | $59–149 |
| Kamala | west | 26 km | $100 | $61–183 |
| Surin | west | 22 km | $110 | $56–430 |
| Bang Tao | west | 18 km | $109 | $56–158 |
| Layan | west | 15 km | $194 | $129–546 |
| Nai Thon | west | 12 km | $170 | $124–231 |
| Nai Yang | north | 4 km | $69 | $39–93 |
| Mai Khao | north | 8 km | $309 | $134–381 |
| Nai Harn | south | 45 km | $87 | $62–144 |
The island-wide median across all areas and segments is $78, built from 628 observations. The beaches in the table are not all measured with the same depth: Patong has 48 observations, Surin 25 and Nai Thon 12. The smaller the sample, the more a single new hotel can move the median, so read differences of a few dollars between neighbouring beaches as noise.
Tier one: the town beaches (Patong, Karon, Kata)
These three form the busy centre of the west coast, and they are the cheapest places to sleep next to the sea. They are also the beaches with the deepest supporting cast: restaurants, pharmacies, scooter rental, massage, dive shops and tour desks within a short walk.
Patong is the largest and the least subtle. The beach itself is a long curve with a wall of hotels behind it, and the town beyond is the island’s nightlife capital. The median hotel night is $54 across 48 observations, the lowest of the beach areas in this snapshot. A large part of that is the number of low-cost 3-star properties: the 3-star median is $45, against $72 for 4-star. Day to day, a mid-range visitor budget is $39 per day outside accommodation. Patong suits people who want everything within walking distance and do not mind noise; it does not suit anyone looking for a quiet swim at dawn.
Karon is the calmer neighbour: a long, wide beach, mid-range resorts and a small town centre. Its median is $95 (n = 38), and the 4-star median is $114. The 5-star observations are few, so the 5-star figure is read with care. A mid-range daily budget is $35. Karon is the sensible compromise for those who want Patong’s prices without Patong’s evenings, and it is covered in more detail on its area page.
Kata is the family bay, split into two curves with a small rock between them. The median is $86 (n = 60); the 3-star is $74 and the 4-star is $150. A mid-range day outside the hotel is $38. Kata is the one most often recommended for families, and the Phuket with kids guide goes through why. Be aware that Kata is 42 km from the airport, so the transfer takes longer than to the northern beaches.
Tier two: the resort beaches (Kamala, Bang Tao)
Further north the beaches get longer and the town gets smaller. These two are where resort complexes, beach clubs and villa estates replace the strip of bars.
Kamala is a low-rise village beach with a median of $100 (n = 76). Its 3-star median is $73, which is higher than the equivalent in the town beaches, and its 4-star median is $124. That pattern is typical of resort-led areas: the entry price is higher, and the gap between tiers is smaller. A mid-range day costs $36. The beach is calm for a west-coast beach in the dry season, and the village keeps its small scale.
Bang Tao is eight kilometres of sand with the Laguna complex at one end and a growing dining scene around its marina area. The all-segment median is $109 (n = 49), with a 4-star median of $120 and a 5-star median of $240. A mid-range day outside the hotel is $41, and a fine-dining day is $99, the highest fine-dining figure among the areas with a published number in this snapshot. Bang Tao is also where the island’s largest villa market sits: a three-bedroom villa has a median of $7,372 per month (n = 27). Because it is the most complete beach for a week-long stay, it is one of the most common recommendations in the where to stay guide.
Tier three: the quiet and upmarket beaches (Surin, Layan, Nai Thon)
These are the beaches for people who want the sea and little else. They cost more, and the reason is not only the sand: it is the absence of cheap stock. Where a tier-one beach is full of 3-star rooms, these beaches are almost entirely boutique or luxury.
Surin is a short, steep beach with beach clubs and boutique hotels. The all-segment median is $110 (n = 25), and the 4-star median is $137, well above the 4-star medians of the town beaches. Surin has a reputation for rough shorebreak in the wet season, and the swimming window is narrow. Mid-range days are $38.
Layan is the sheltered northern end of Bang Tao bay, beside a national-park beach with no strip at all. The all-segment median is $194 (n = 23), and the 4-star median is $272. The 3-star sample is too small to publish, and the same applies to the daily-budget series, so the text does not guess at them. A three-bedroom villa has a median of $7,428 per month (n = 11).
Nai Thon is a small secluded bay inside a national park with only a handful of hotels. The all-segment median is $170, but it rests on 12 observations, so it describes the few properties that exist rather than a market. If Nai Thon is on your shortlist, compare actual quotes on your dates; the median is only a rough orientation.
Tier four: the airport-side beaches (Nai Yang, Mai Khao)
The north of the island is where the beaches are longest and emptiest, and where the plane noise is the price of admission.
Nai Yang is the airport beach, 4 km from arrivals. Casuarina trees shade the sand, the village keeps its local seafood restaurants, and the all-segment median is $69 (n = 57), among the lowest in the table. The 3-star median is $72 and the 4-star $76. For a short stay or a late arrival it offers the best ratio of price to transfer time. The three-bedroom villa market is the cheapest of the beach areas with a published number: $2,703 per month (n = 7).
Mai Khao is eleven kilometres of nearly empty beach with large resorts spaced far apart, and it is the opposite of Nai Yang on price: the all-segment median is $309 (n = 34), driven by the 4-star and 5-star resorts. The 4-star median of $357 is above the 5-star median of $309 in this snapshot, which is a mix effect and not a pricing rule. With few places to walk to, guests mostly eat and spend inside the resort. Part of the beach is a nesting site for sea turtles, and the resort mix reflects that long, protected frontage.
The southern option: Nai Harn
Nai Harn is the one swimming beach in the south that most visitors consider. It is a lake-backed bay near Promthep Cape, 45 km from the airport. The all-segment median is $87 (n = 24), which is above Kata, its closest neighbour by character. The 3-star median is $56 and the 4-star $79. A mid-range daily budget is $33. It is the beach with the strongest expat-village feel, and it is a good base if you intend to explore Rawai and Chalong as well.
Sea state: the month decides more than the beach
Every west-coast beach faces the Andaman Sea, and the monsoon changes all of them at once. The climate normals for 2015–2025 give the clearest picture. The driest month is February, the wettest is May, the calmest sea falls in January, and the roughest sea falls in July.
| Month | Rainfall | Rain days | Mean wave height | Sea state |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 37 mm | 10 | 0.5 m | calm |
| March | 73 mm | 14 | 0.5 m | calm |
| May | 343 mm | 28 | 1.0 m | swell |
| July | 241 mm | 24 | 1.5 m | rough |
| September | 309 mm | 25 | 1.4 m | rough |
| November | 270 mm | 27 | 0.6 m | calm |
The practical reading is simple. In the months marked calm, almost any west-coast beach works for swimming, and the choice comes down to price and atmosphere. In the months marked rough, the sheltered or gently shelving beaches are better than the steep, exposed ones, and every beach will have days when the flag is red. The number of rough-sea days in an average July is 13, against 0 in an average January. Sea-surface temperature stays warm all year: the normal for January is 28.8 °C and for August 29.9 °C, so the water itself is never the reason to stay out.
A flag system operates on the main beaches. Red means do not swim, yellow means caution, and the lifeguards’ decision is final. Rip currents are the main hazard in the wet season, and they are not always visible from the sand. A beach that looks flat can still be dangerous on a red-flag day.
Crowds and the calendar
The beach you choose matters less for crowds than the month you choose it in. Phuket recorded 14.25 M visitors in 2025, of which 75.4% were foreign, and the airport handled 17.47 M passengers. Those numbers concentrate in the dry months. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports records the peak foreign month in a typical year in the high season, and the airport’s busiest month in the latest full year was January 2025 (2.00 M).
For beaches, this has two consequences. In the high season the town beaches fill early, sunbeds on Patong and Kata are taken by mid-morning, and the quieter beaches (Layan, Nai Thon, Mai Khao) stay roomy. In the wet season the reverse applies to the hotels: the same rooms cost less, many beach clubs shorten their hours, and the whole west coast is calmer in terms of people but rougher in terms of water. Our monsoon season guide goes through how to use that trade-off.
Which beach for which trip
The tiers become a recommendation once you attach a purpose.
- First trip, wants things to do: Kata or Karon. Prices are among the lowest of the swimming beaches, the sea is calm enough in the dry months for children, and a mid-range day outside the hotel is about $38 in Kata.
- Nightlife and the widest choice of rooms: Patong, with the caveat that it is the least restful beach on the island.
- Couples and resort stays: Bang Tao for range, Surin or Layan for polish. Expect the all-segment median to start above $109.
- Short stay or late arrival: Nai Yang, because of the 4 km transfer. Compare the figures on the airport transfer guide.
- A month or more: Bang Tao, Nai Harn, Kata or Nai Yang, depending on the villa market. See renting a villa for a month.
- Complete seclusion: Mai Khao or Nai Thon, with a clear idea of how you will eat and get around.

What the ranking leaves out
A few limits are worth stating plainly. The index measures hotel rates at one point in the booking window, so a last-minute or peak-season price can differ from the figure here. It does not measure beach quality, cleanliness or water clarity, none of which has a published series we can cite. It does not track beach-club minimum spend or sunbed charges either, which can matter in Surin and Kamala. And the list of beaches is the west coast and north; it ignores the east coast, where the places to swim are fewer.
If a decision depends on a few dollars, treat it as a tie and choose on character. If it depends on a large gap, such as the difference between the lowest and highest medians in the table, the gap is real and it will survive the next snapshot. The index is refreshed on the 1st and the 15th of each month, and these figures update with it. For the full set of area pages, start at the hotel price index and the tourism statistics.
FAQ
What is the best beach in Phuket?
There is no single winner, because the data pulls in different directions. Patong has a median hotel night of $54 and the most to do; Surin sits at $110 and is the quietest of the resort beaches; Nai Yang is $69 and the closest to the airport. Pick the beach that matches your budget and the kind of evening you want.
Which Phuket beach is the cheapest to stay at?
On the October 2026 island-wide medians, Patong ($54), Karon ($95) and Nai Yang ($69) are the lowest of the beach areas. The ranking can change with each snapshot, and a lower median partly reflects a larger share of 3-star stock rather than a worse beach.
Which Phuket beaches are safe for swimming?
Swimming safety depends on the month more than on the beach. The west-coast sea is calm in January and roughest in July in the 2015–2025 normals. In the wet season, red flags and rip currents apply to every open west-coast beach; follow the flags and the lifeguards and do not swim when a red flag is up.
Which beach is closest to Phuket airport?
Nai Yang, at about 4 km, followed by Mai Khao at 8 km. Both are on the north coast and both are a short ride from arrivals, which is why they suit late landings and short stays.
Are there good beaches on the east side of Phuket?
Not for swimming in the sense most visitors mean. The east coast around Chalong and Panwa has marinas, piers and mudflats at low tide, and its appeal is practical rather than scenic. The swimming beaches are on the west coast and, for the south, at Nai Harn.
When is the best month for Phuket beaches?
Calm sea and low rainfall line up in the dry months. The 2015–2025 normals put February as the driest month and January as the calmest sea. The best time to visit page has the full table.
