Short answer. April is Phuket’s hot month and the hinge between the dry and the wet season. The climate normals (2015–2025) put daytime highs at 30.7 °C, nights at 25.7 °C, sunshine at 311 h and rain at 183 mm on 25 days, with a calm sea on the west coast. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports counted 1,174,215 visitors in April 2025. The index’s latest observation (October 2026) is not an April month, so a four-star night island-wide reads $107 today; the April price is something the index will measure, not guess.

What April looks like on the numbers

The north-east monsoon, which gives Phuket its dry winter, fades during March. By April the wind has weakened and turned, the air is warmer and wetter, and the first thunderstorms of the year arrive from the south-west. The figures below are the median of eleven Aprils (2015–2025) from the Open-Meteo ERA5 reanalysis for a west-coast grid point, so they describe a typical month, not a forecast. The wave and rough-sea fields start in 2022 and rest on a smaller sample.

Measure March April May
Rain 73 mm 183 mm 343 mm
Rain days 14 25 28
Heavy-rain days 0 2 4
Sunshine 343 h 311 h 298 h
Day max 31.7 °C 30.7 °C 29.8 °C
Night min 25.4 °C 25.7 °C 25.6 °C
Humidity 76% 82% 86%
Sea state calm calm swell
Rough-sea days 0 0 4

Read across the rain row and the transition is plain: the island is leaving the dry season. March is still mostly dry, April is the first month with real rain, and May is where the green season is usually considered to start. For the whole calendar on one page see best time to visit, and for the wet half of the year read the monsoon season guide. The winter months before this one are covered in Phuket in December and Phuket in January.

Heat and humidity

April is where the thermometer and the dew point both rise. Daytime highs in a normal April are about 30.7 °C, and nights stay near 25.7 °C, so there is little relief after dark. Humidity averages 82%, against 79% in a normal January. That gap is the real difference visitors feel: the same temperature reading is much more tiring when the air is damp.

The data names March as the hottest month of the year by daytime maximum and December as the coolest. Even when April is not the single hottest month, it belongs to the hot stretch, and it is the one that coincides with the Thai school holidays and with Songkran.

Practical consequences, none of which depend on a number:

  • Plan the outdoor part of the day for early morning and late afternoon. The middle of the day is for a pool, a café or a museum.
  • Drink more than you think you need. Heat exhaustion in a first week is a common reason for a lost day.
  • Sunscreen is a daily item, not a beach item. A cloud layer does not stop the ultraviolet.
  • Air conditioning matters more in April than in any winter month, and for a month-long stay it shows up in the electricity bill (see the long-stay cost of living guide).

Rain in April: what the showers look like

A rain day in these normals is a day with measurable precipitation, which includes a short shower. The normal April has 25 of them and 183 mm in total, with 2 heavy-rain days. Those heavy days are the useful planning number: they are the days a boat trip or a scooter day is genuinely at risk.

The typical April pattern is a bright morning, building cloud around midday, and a storm in the afternoon or early evening that lasts under an hour. It rarely looks like the all-day rain of September, whose normal is 309 mm, or October’s 340 mm. A median is the middle year, not a guarantee, and some Aprils in the record were much wetter than the normal. Check the today page for the current outlook rather than relying on the month.

Sea temperature, swimming and flags

The sea is warm all year. The normal April surface temperature is 30.7 °C, and the warmest month by sea temperature is May. Warm water also means jellyfish are a consideration in the transition months, so a lightweight rash vest is reasonable.

The wave record is shorter than the rest, but it is consistent with the seasonal story. A normal April has 0 rough-sea days, with a typical wave height of 0.5 m, while a normal July has 13. A rough day here means the wave height crosses 1.5 m, the same threshold the today page uses for its flag estimate, so the month and the day do not contradict each other.

Whatever the month, the rules are the same:

  • Flags decide, not the calendar. Red means stay out.
  • Rip currents form on open west-coast beaches after any swell, so swim between the flags where lifeguards post them.
  • Sheltered bays in the south stay calmer on a rough day; the Rawai page describes that side of the island.
  • Snorkelling visibility is usually good in April before the rains stir the water; ask the operator about conditions on the day rather than assuming.

Air quality

The smoke season over mainland Southeast Asia peaks before April, and Phuket usually escapes the worst of it. The last complete month on file is 11.3 µg/m³ (August 2026) for PM2.5, with 0 days over the 37.5 µg/m³ threshold in that month, and the today page shows the current reading. Dengue is a wet-season story: in 2025 the island recorded 1,546 cases according to the series on file, with the peak in July. April is the start of the rise, so repellent is sensible.

How crowded: visitors, occupancy and the airport

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports publishes monthly provincial figures. April is a shoulder month: the winter peak is over, but the school holidays and Songkran keep a base of domestic and regional visitors. The same month in successive years is the cleanest comparison:

April Visitors Foreign visitors Occupancy Airport passengers
2023 1,057,691 798,917 83.6% 1,185,581
2024 1,216,157 921,107 83.9% 1,442,523
2025 1,174,215 866,723 81.8% 1,507,379
2026 1,127,817 827,711 77.2% not yet published

Where a cell shows “no published figure yet”, the source has not released that month, and the site does not fill the gap with an estimate. For the full year, the airport handled 17,474,051 passengers in 2025, of which 62.0% were international, and the busiest month was January 2025 (2.00 M). Compare that with the lowest month, September 2025 (1.02 M), to see how far April sits from each end. How to read these sources is explained in the tourism statistics guide, and the stats hub holds the full tables.

Who comes in April? The top three markets by guest arrivals for 2025 were Russia (17.3%), China (12.8%), India (10.2%). Each market has its own seasonal shape in the monthly nationality tables. See the visitor’s-eye pages for India and Russia.

Songkran and the April calendar

Songkran, the Thai New Year water festival, falls in mid-April and shapes the month more than the weather does. The dates are fixed by the national calendar, and the full picture of what happens in Phuket is in the Songkran in Phuket guide. For this guide the point is cost and logistics: demand for rooms, transport and tours around the festival is higher than in the days either side, and roads and beach areas are busy. The events calendar lists the dated events, with lunar-based dates marked approximate. The index measures hotels, villas, tours, transfers and daily budgets, not a restaurant table or a festival package, so no festival premium is quoted here.

What April costs: the index view

A fair warning first, in the spirit of the index’s rules: each observation carries a season tag, and the latest one (October 2026) is not an April observation. The index does not extrapolate, so it cannot say today how an April night compares with the figures below, and this guide does not either. When an April observation arrives, the comparison becomes a measured number and this page updates itself, because every price on it is a token.

What the index holds now, as the baseline to compare April against:

Item Latest median Range (P25–P75) Sample
Hotel, 3-star, per night, island-wide $56 $40–78 181
Hotel, 4-star, per night, island-wide $107 $66–174 210
Hotel, 5-star, per night, island-wide $213 $138–333 95
Villa, 3-bed, per month, island-wide $5,941 $4,390–7,935 148

The exchange rate behind the dollar figures is 33.41 THB per USD (ECB, 16 October 2026). A cell that reads “no published figure yet” means fewer than five observations back it, and the index prints nothing rather than a guess. The full series are on the hotel index and the villa index.

Area by area

These are the latest four-star medians by area, again the October 2026 baseline rather than April prices:

Area 4-star per night Sample Distance to airport
Patong $72 12 32 km
Kata $150 20 42 km
Bang Tao $120 13 18 km
Rawai $67 16 42 km

The site also keeps a forward view of quoted prices in the hotel index, which is the right place to look at how rates for future months are being quoted rather than relying on a single guide.

Where to stay in April

With the sea still mostly calm along the west coast, the beach areas work, and the choice is about character:

  • Patong has the most choice and the most noise, and it is where the Songkran crowds concentrate. See the Patong page.
  • Kata and Karon are the family beach pair, with gentle swimming and long sand.
  • Bang Tao suits resort and villa stays, with plenty of shade-and-pool options for the hottest hours.
  • Rawai and Chalong in the south are quieter, with local restaurants and boat piers.
  • Phuket Town is the budget-and-culture base for a hot month, with air-conditioned museums and cafés close by; see the Old Town guide.

For a structured choice by trip type use the where to stay guide. A pool matters more in April than in January, so weigh it when comparing rooms.

Getting around and day trips

A scooter or a car is the usual way to move around. In hot, showery weather a car is more comfortable, and the car rental guide and scooter guide cover costs and paperwork. At the latest observation a scooter day is $9 and a car day $24. Taxi and ride-hailing fares are in the taxi and ride-hailing guide, and airport transfers in the airport transfer guide.

Tours are still running in April, and the sea is generally friendly to boats. The Phi Phi day trip is $63 per person and the James Bond Island trip $52 at the latest observation; the ferry basics are in the Phi Phi ferry guide. A tour price in the index is a median of observed offers, a benchmark for comparing quotes and not a promise.

Planning around April weather

Build the day around the heat. Book the early slot for boats, viewpoints and temples, and keep the afternoon flexible.

Keep one indoor option per day. A storm that lasts forty minutes is easy to absorb if the afternoon already has a café, spa or museum in it.

Read cancellation terms. As the season turns, operators become more cautious about sea conditions. Free cancellation or a rebooking option is worth a small premium.

Convert at the day’s rate. The reference rate on this site is 33.41 THB per USD (ECB, 16 October 2026). The trip cost calculator turns the index medians into a trip estimate, below.

An April checklist

  • Dates near Songkran? Book rooms and transport earlier, and expect busy roads.
  • Heat plan? Early starts, a pool, shade and water.
  • Rain backup? One indoor option per day, especially from mid-month.
  • Sea plans? Check the flag on the day; April is mostly calm, not always.
  • Budget? Use the median and the range in the index tables, not a single figure, and run the numbers in the trip cost tool.
  • Documents? Entry rules change; the visa rules guide gives the position with its date.

How the data on this page works

Nothing on this page is typed by hand if the data covers it. Climate numbers are tokens resolved from the climate normals; visitor and occupancy figures are tokens from the Ministry’s monthly tables; airport figures come from the Airports of Thailand reports; prices come from the index’s latest point for each series, always with the month they were observed. When the index adds an April observation, the tokens move and the numbers move with them. That is also why the page says so little about how April compares in price: the data to say it does not exist yet, and the rule is that null is better than a guess. The methodology page describes how each series is collected and the sample thresholds that decide whether a median is published.

Two limits are worth stating plainly. The climate figures are reanalysis for one west-coast grid point, so they describe the west coast rather than every corner of the island. And the Ministry’s provincial figures count visitors to the province, not the number sleeping in any one area, so a busy month in the statistics does not translate directly into a crowded beach.
