Short answer. July is the middle of Phuket’s wet season, and it is better than its reputation suggests for people who are flexible. The climate normals (2015–2025) put daytime highs at 29.2 °C, nights at 25.8 °C, sunshine at 279 h and rain at 241 mm on 24 days, with a rough sea on the west coast. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports counted 1,139,408 visitors in July 2025. The index’s latest observation (October 2026) is not a July month, so a four-star night island-wide reads $107 today; the July price is something the index will measure, not guess.
What July looks like on the numbers
From May to October the south-west monsoon pushes moist air across the Andaman Sea. Rain comes in bands, the sea along the west coast gets heavier, and cloud covers the island for much of the day. The figures below are the median of eleven Julys (2015–2025) from the Open-Meteo ERA5 reanalysis for a west-coast grid point, so they describe a typical month, not a forecast. The wave and rough-sea fields start in 2022 and rest on a smaller sample.
| Measure | June | July | August |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rain | 275 mm | 241 mm | 270 mm |
| Rain days | 22 | 24 | 25 |
| Heavy-rain days | 4 | 3 | 3 |
| Sunshine | 284 h | 279 h | 277 h |
| Day max | 29.3 °C | 29.2 °C | 28.9 °C |
| Night min | 25.9 °C | 25.8 °C | 25.3 °C |
| Humidity | 84% | 84% | 84% |
| Sea state | swell | rough | rough |
| Rough-sea days | 8 | 13 | 9 |
The data names May as the wettest month of the year and February as the driest, so July sits in the wet half without being the extreme. For the whole calendar on one page see best time to visit, and for the season as a whole read the monsoon season guide. The dry-season months are covered in Phuket in December and Phuket in January, and the hot transition month in Phuket weather in April.
Rain in July: how the showers behave
A rain day in these normals is a day with measurable precipitation, which includes a short shower. The normal July has 24 of them and 241 mm in total, with 3 heavy-rain days. The heavy days are the useful planning number: they are the days a boat trip, a scooter ride or an outdoor wedding is genuinely at risk.
The pattern differs from April’s single afternoon storm. In July rain can arrive at any hour, often in bands that last one to three hours, followed by a bright interval. Mornings tend to be the better window, but this is a tendency and not a rule, and the medians hide the spread between years. Some Julys in the record were much wetter than the normal and some were noticeably drier. Compare with September, whose normal is 309 mm, and October, whose normal is 340 mm: July is wet, but the deepest rain comes later in the season.
Practical consequences, none of which depend on a number:
- Pack a light rain jacket and quick-drying clothes rather than an umbrella, because the wind often makes umbrellas useless on the coast.
- Keep one indoor option for every day. A museum, a spa, a cooking class or a café absorbs a two-hour band without wasting the day.
- Protect electronics. A waterproof pouch for a phone is cheap and useful on boats and scooters.
- Roads get slick. If you ride a scooter, slow down on painted lines and drain covers; the scooter rental guide covers the paperwork and risks.
Sunshine, heat and humidity
Cloud lowers the daytime maximum, so July is not as hot as April. Daytime highs in a normal July are about 29.2 °C, with nights near 25.8 °C. Humidity averages 84%, against 79% in a normal January, so the air feels damp even when the thermometer is moderate. Sunshine totals 279 h for the month, compared with 329 h in January, which is the clearest single number for what the wet season takes away.
The ultraviolet index remains high through cloud, so sunscreen is still a daily item. Clothes dry slowly, so for a long stay a room with good ventilation or a dryer matters more than in winter.
Sea temperature, swimming and flags
The sea stays warm: the normal July surface temperature is 29.9 °C, and the warmest month by sea temperature is May. Warmth is not the problem in July; waves are.
The wave record is shorter than the rest, but it is consistent with the seasonal story. A normal July has 13 rough-sea days, with a typical wave height of 1.5 m, while a normal January has 0. A rough day here means the wave height crosses 1.5 m, the same threshold the today page uses for its flag estimate, so the month and the day do not contradict each other. The data names July as the roughest month and January as the calmest.
Rules that hold in every wet-season month:
- Flags decide, not the calendar. Red means stay out of the water, and in July red flags are common on open west-coast beaches.
- Rip currents form quickly after swell. Swim only where lifeguards post flags, and never alone.
- The east and south shores are more sheltered when the swell comes from the south-west. The Rawai page describes the south, though even there conditions vary by tide and wind.
- Boat operators cancel or reroute when the sea is rough. Ask what happens to your money before you pay; see the Phi Phi ferry guide for how ferries handle it.
Air quality and health
The smoke season over mainland Southeast Asia is over by July, and wet-season air on the island is generally clean. The last complete month on file is 11.3 µg/m³ (August 2026) for PM2.5, with 0 days over the 37.5 µg/m³ threshold in that month, and the today page shows the current reading.
Dengue is the health story of the wet season. In 2025 the island recorded 1,546 cases according to the series on file, with the peak in July, and 67% of the year’s cases fell between May and October. The mosquito that carries it bites by day, so repellent in daylight matters as much as in the evening. If a fever follows a trip, seek care and mention where you have been; the hospitals guide explains how the system works for visitors.
How crowded: visitors, occupancy and the airport
July is a low-to-middle month for foreign visitors, held up by the northern-hemisphere summer holidays, with Chinese, Indian and Middle Eastern travellers following different calendars from European ones. The same month in successive years is the cleanest comparison:
| July | Visitors | Foreign visitors | Occupancy | Airport passengers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 961,224 | 626,049 | 70.0% | 1,158,753 |
| 2024 | 1,150,936 | 934,722 | 74.7% | 1,393,874 |
| 2025 | 1,139,408 | 905,048 | 70.7% | 1,237,511 |
| 2026 | 1,135,382 | 895,106 | 74.2% | not yet published |
Where a cell shows “no published figure yet”, the source has not released that month, and the site does not fill the gap with an estimate. For the full year, the airport handled 17,474,051 passengers in 2025, of which 62.0% were international, and the busiest month was January 2025 (2.00 M). Compare that with the lowest month, September 2025 (1.02 M), to see how far July sits from each end. How to read these sources is explained in the tourism statistics guide, and the stats hub holds the full tables.
Who comes in July? The top three markets by guest arrivals for 2025 were Russia (17.3%), China (12.8%), India (10.2%). Each market has its own seasonal shape; July for Russia is not July for India. See the visitor’s-eye pages for India and Russia.
What July costs: the index view
A fair warning first, in the spirit of the index’s rules: each observation carries a season tag, and the latest one (October 2026) is not a July observation. The index does not extrapolate, so it cannot say today how a July night compares with the figures below, and this guide does not either. The common expectation is that wet-season rooms are cheaper, and the hotel index will test that with measured points rather than assumption. When a July observation arrives, the comparison becomes a number and this page updates itself, because every price on it is a token.
What the index holds now, as the baseline to compare July against:
| Item | Latest median | Range (P25–P75) | Sample |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel, 3-star, per night, island-wide | $56 | $40–78 | 181 |
| Hotel, 4-star, per night, island-wide | $107 | $66–174 | 210 |
| Hotel, 5-star, per night, island-wide | $213 | $138–333 | 95 |
| Villa, 3-bed, per month, island-wide | $5,941 | $4,390–7,935 | 148 |
The exchange rate behind the dollar figures is 33.41 THB per USD (ECB, 16 October 2026). A cell that reads “no published figure yet” means fewer than five observations back it, and the index prints nothing rather than a guess. The full villa series is on the villa index.
Area by area
These are the latest four-star medians by area, again the October 2026 baseline rather than July prices:
| Area | 4-star per night | Sample | Distance to airport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patong | $72 | 12 | 32 km |
| Kata | $150 | 20 | 42 km |
| Bang Tao | $120 | 13 | 18 km |
| Rawai | $67 | 16 | 42 km |
The site also keeps a forward view of quoted prices in the hotel index, which is the right place to look at how rates for future months are being quoted rather than relying on a single guide.
Where to stay in July
The sea decides more than the price does:
- Phuket Town is the natural wet-season base, with air-conditioned museums, cafés and food, and no dependence on the beach. See the Old Town guide.
- Kata and Karon have long beaches and swim-friendly stretches on calmer days, but they are open to the swell.
- Patong keeps its nightlife and shopping regardless of the sea, which is useful on a red-flag day.
- Bang Tao suits villa and resort stays where the pool replaces the sea; a covered terrace is worth more in July than a beach view.
- Rawai and Chalong in the south have sheltered stretches and the boat piers, with local restaurants.
For a structured choice by trip type use the where to stay guide. In July, check that a pool is clean and covered by shade, and that the property has a plan for a heavy-rain day, such as a lounge, a gym or a cinema room.
Getting around and day trips
A car is more comfortable than a scooter in rain, and the car rental guide covers costs and paperwork. At the latest observation a scooter day is $9 and a car day $24. Taxi and ride-hailing fares are in the taxi and ride-hailing guide, and airport transfers in the airport transfer guide.
Tours run in July, but sea tours are the ones to treat with care. The Phi Phi day trip is $63 per person and the James Bond Island trip $52 at the latest observation. The Similan Islands, reached from the mainland, are closed for the season each year, so do not plan them for July; check the current announcement before booking anything similar. Land-based options such as the elephant sanctuary ($88) and the old town tour ($59) are less dependent on the sea. A tour price in the index is a median of observed offers, a benchmark for comparing quotes and not a promise.
Planning around July weather
Book flexibility, not just price. A refundable or changeable booking is worth a small premium in a month when the sea can cancel a boat day.
Put sea days early. If you have a long stay, schedule the boat trip in the first days so that there is time to rebook if it is cancelled.
Choose the area for the bad day. Ask what you would do in a rough-sea afternoon, and pick the area where the answer is easy.
Convert at the day’s rate. The reference rate on this site is 33.41 THB per USD (ECB, 16 October 2026). The trip cost calculator turns the index medians into a trip estimate, below.

A July checklist
- Sea plans? Check the flag on the day; July often has red flags on the west coast.
- Rain backup? One indoor option per day, and a waterproof bag.
- Cancellation terms? Read them before paying for boats, and for the room.
- Health? Daytime repellent for dengue, and travel insurance that covers a motorbike only if you hold the right licence.
- Budget? Use the median and the range in the index tables, not a single figure, and run the numbers in the trip cost tool.
- Documents? Entry rules change; the visa rules guide gives the position with its date.
How the data on this page works
Nothing on this page is typed by hand if the data covers it. Climate numbers are tokens resolved from the climate normals; visitor and occupancy figures are tokens from the Ministry’s monthly tables; airport figures come from the Airports of Thailand reports; prices come from the index’s latest point for each series, always with the month they were observed. When the index adds a July observation, the tokens move and the numbers move with them. That is also why the page says so little about how July compares in price: the data to say it does not exist yet, and the rule is that null is better than a guess. The methodology page describes how each series is collected and the sample thresholds that decide whether a median is published.
Two limits are worth stating plainly. The climate figures are reanalysis for one west-coast grid point, so they describe the west coast rather than every corner of the island. And the Ministry’s provincial figures count visitors to the province, not the number sleeping in any one area, so a quiet month in the statistics does not mean an empty beach, nor does a busy one mean a crowded beach.
FAQ
What is the weather like in Phuket in July?
The climate normals (2015–2025) give daytime highs of 29.2 °C, nights of 25.8 °C, 84% humidity, 279 h of sunshine and 241 mm of rain on 24 days.
Does it rain all day in Phuket in July?
Rarely all day. A normal July has 24 days with measurable rain and 3 heavy-rain days, so most days include dry spells between showers.
Is the sea rough in Phuket in July?
On the west coast it often is. The normals show 13 rough-sea days in July with a typical wave height of 1.5 m, against 0 in January. Obey the flags.
Is Phuket crowded in July?
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports counted 1,139,408 visitors in July 2025, with hotel occupancy of 70.7%. The airport handled 1,237,511 passengers that month.
How much is a hotel in Phuket in July?
The index holds $107 per night for a four-star island-wide at its latest observation (October 2026). That is not a July observation, and the index does not extrapolate, so no July price is quoted until it has measured one.
Is July a good month for a Phuket holiday?
It suits flexible travellers who accept showers and a livelier sea in exchange for green hills, quieter beaches and, usually, softer demand. It is a poor fit for people who need a guaranteed swim day.
