Short answer. October is the heart of Phuket’s green season and, on the climate record, one of the wettest stretches of the year. The normals (2015–2025) put rain at 340 mm on 28 days, sunshine at 286 h, daytime highs at 29.0 °C and the west-coast sea state at calm. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports counted 1,039,843 hotel guest arrivals in October 2025. The index’s latest observation (October 2026) reads $107 for a four-star night island-wide; the guide shows what is measured and says plainly where the index has no figure.

What October looks like on the numbers

The south-west monsoon dominates the Andaman Sea from roughly May to October. By October the wind and the swell are usually past their strongest, but the air is saturated and the afternoons are unsettled. The figures below are the median of eleven Octobers (2015–2025) from the Open-Meteo ERA5 reanalysis for a west-coast grid point. They describe a typical month, not a forecast. The wave and rough-sea fields start in 2022 and rest on a smaller sample.

Measure September October November
Rain 309 mm 340 mm 270 mm
Rain days 25 28 27
Heavy-rain days 6 4 3
Sunshine 248 h 286 h 260 h
Day max 28.7 °C 29.0 °C 28.7 °C
Night min 24.8 °C 24.4 °C 24.5 °C
Humidity 86% 86% 87%
Sea state rough calm calm
Rough-sea days 12 2 0

Read across the rain row and you can see the island turning. The data names May as the wettest month of the year and February as the driest. October sits on the wet side of that range, and November is the month in which the wet season normally loosens its grip. For the whole calendar on one page see best time to visit, and for the logic of the season read the monsoon season guide. The same guide series covers July, when the monsoon is in full swing, and December, when the dry season is under way.

Rain in October: what a wet day looks like

A rain day in these normals is a day with measurable precipitation, which includes a short shower. The normal October has 28 of them, with 340 mm in total and 4 heavy-rain days. The heavy-rain count is the more useful planning number: those are the days on which a boat trip, a scooter ride or an island-hopping plan is genuinely at risk.

Three patterns are typical and none of them depends on a figure:

  • Afternoon downpours. A bright morning, building cloud from midday and a heavy burst in the afternoon or evening that lasts an hour or two.
  • All-day grey spells. Less frequent, but they happen, usually when a low-pressure system passes over the Andaman Sea. These are the days to move the plan indoors.
  • Sudden flooding on low roads. Drainage in the busiest areas struggles with intense bursts. Roads recover within hours, but a taxi ride can take longer than the map says.

A median is the middle year, not a guarantee. Some Octobers in the record were much drier than the normal and some much wetter. The today page shows the current outlook, which is more useful than the month for any decision inside the next three days.

Heat, humidity and sunshine

October is not cool, but it is not the hottest month either. Daytime highs in a normal October are about 29.0 °C, with nights near 24.4 °C. Humidity averages 86%, against 79% in a normal January, and that gap is what visitors feel. Sunshine totals 286 h for the month, against 329 h in January, so the dry-season brightness is simply not there. The sun still comes out, usually in the morning, and the ultraviolet index does not care about cloud, so sunscreen remains a daily item.

The data names March as the hottest month by daytime maximum and December as the coolest, so October’s temperatures are an ordinary tropical range rather than an extreme.

Sea temperature, swimming and flags

The sea stays warm all year. The normal October surface temperature is 29.5 °C, and the warmest month by sea temperature is May. Warm water means comfortable swimming, but it does not mean calm water.

The wave record is shorter than the rest of the climate series, but it fits the seasonal story. A normal October has 2 rough-sea days, with a typical wave height of 1.0 m, while a normal January has 0. A rough day here means the wave height crosses 1.5 m, the same threshold the today page uses for its flag estimate, so the month and the day do not contradict each other.

Whatever the month, the rules are the same:

  • Flags decide, not the calendar. A red flag means stay out of the water.
  • Rip currents form on open west-coast beaches after any swell. Swim between the flags where lifeguards post them, and if there are no flags and no lifeguards, do not treat a beautiful beach as a safe one.
  • Sheltered bays on the south and east sides stay calmer on a rough day; the Rawai page describes the south.
  • Boat operators cancel on sea state, and a cancelled boat trip is a normal event in October, not a scandal. Ask about the refund or rebooking rule before paying.

Air quality and health

Rain washes the air, and the wet season is when Phuket’s air is at its cleanest. The last complete month on file is 11.3 µg/m³ (August 2026) for PM2.5, with 0 days over the 37.5 µg/m³ threshold in that month, and the today page shows the current reading.

The health point of the wet season is dengue. In 2025 the island recorded 1,546 cases in the series on file, with the peak in July, and 67% of the year’s cases fell in the May–October window. Standing water collects after storms, so repellent in the evening and a room with working screens or air conditioning are sensible. For medical care if something goes wrong, see the hospitals guide.

How crowded: visitors, occupancy and the airport

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports publishes monthly provincial figures. October is a low-season month, but the picture in the data is a gradual recovery towards the winter peak as the month ends. Comparing the same month across years is the cleanest way to read it:

October Guest arrivals Foreign guest arrivals Occupancy Airport passengers
2023 849,148 660,305 67.2% 1,098,093
2024 999,372 809,022 75.6% 1,299,928
2025 1,039,843 817,233 77.6% 1,357,741

Where a cell shows “no published figure yet”, the source has not released that month, and the site does not fill the gap with an estimate. For the full year, the airport handled 17,474,051 passengers in 2025, of which 62.0% were international. The busiest month was January 2025 (2.00 M) and the lowest was September 2025 (1.02 M); place October between those two to see how far it sits from each end. How to read these sources is explained in the tourism statistics guide, and the stats hub holds the full tables.

Who comes? The top three markets by guest arrivals for 2025 were Russia (17.3%), China (12.8%), India (10.2%). Each market has its own seasonal shape in the monthly nationality tables, and the visitor’s-eye pages for India and Russia show how those markets look from the other end.

What October costs: the index view

The index tags every observation with its month and season, and it does not extrapolate. The latest observation is October 2026, so the figures below are the current medians the index holds. When the series is observed again, every price on this page moves with it, because each one is a token. The history of each series on the index pages shows how rates for the same segment have changed from month to month.

Item Latest median Range (P25–P75) Sample
Hotel, 3-star, per night, island-wide $56 $40–78 181
Hotel, 4-star, per night, island-wide $107 $66–174 210
Hotel, 5-star, per night, island-wide $213 $138–333 95
Villa, 3-bed, per month, island-wide $5,941 $4,390–7,935 148

The exchange rate behind the dollar figures is 33.41 THB per USD (ECB, 16 October 2026). A cell that reads “no published figure yet” means fewer than five observations back it, and the index prints nothing rather than a guess. The full series are on the hotel index and the villa index.

Area by area

These are the latest four-star medians by area:

Area 4-star per night Sample Distance to airport
Patong $72 12 32 km
Kata $150 20 42 km
Bang Tao $120 13 18 km
Rawai $67 16 42 km

The practical point of low season is negotiating room: with occupancy lower than in winter, the gap between the range’s low end and its high end is where a flexible, well-researched booking can land. The index shows that range, not a promise. A villa for a month is a separate calculation, and the monthly villa guide explains how the long-stay market behaves in the low season.

Where to stay in October

In the wet season the sea is less of a deciding factor, so the choice shifts towards what you can do when it rains.

  • Patong has the most indoor options, restaurants and nightlife, which helps on grey days. See the Patong page.
  • Kata and Karon have gentle bays that can still be rough on swell days, with a good range of cafés and spas.
  • Bang Tao suits resort and villa stays, where a pool, a gym and an on-site restaurant carry a rainy afternoon.
  • Rawai and Chalong in the south have sheltered water and local restaurants, away from the west-coast swell.
  • Phuket Town is the best wet-weather base, with museums, cafés and markets close by; see the Old Town guide.

For a structured choice by trip type, use the where to stay guide.

Getting around and day trips

A car is more comfortable than a scooter in a month of daily showers, and wet roads raise the risk on two wheels. The car rental guide and the scooter guide cover costs and paperwork. At the latest observation a scooter day is $9 and a car day $24. Taxi and ride-hailing fares are in the taxi and ride-hailing guide, and airport transfers in the airport transfer guide.

Tours run in October, with more cancellations than in winter. The Phi Phi day trip is $63 per person and the James Bond Island trip $52 at the latest observation; ferry basics are in the Phi Phi ferry guide. A tour price in the index is a median of observed offers, a benchmark for comparing quotes, not a promise. Build a spare day into any trip that depends on a boat.

October events

Late September and October bring the Vegetarian Festival to Phuket Town, one of the island’s best-known events. Its dates follow the lunar calendar, so they move each year and the events calendar marks them as approximate where the date is not yet fixed. The festival has its own explainer in the Vegetarian Festival guide. It changes crowd patterns in the old town and some hotel demand there, but the index measures hotels, villas, tours, transfers and daily budgets and does not isolate a festival premium, so none is quoted here.

Planning around October weather

Be flexible about dates. If a particular boat trip matters, book the early part of the stay and leave slack for a cancellation.

Keep one indoor option per day. A storm that lasts an hour is easy to absorb if the afternoon already has a café, spa or museum in it.

Read cancellation terms. Free cancellation or a rebooking option is worth a small premium in the green season.

Check the sea before the beach. Flags and the today page beat the monthly average.

Convert at the day’s rate. The reference rate on this site is 33.41 THB per USD (ECB, 16 October 2026). The trip cost calculator turns the index medians into a trip estimate, below.

An October checklist

  • Weather plan? One indoor option per day and a light waterproof layer.
  • Sea plans? Check the flag on the day; October is not a month for guaranteed beach days.
  • Transport? Prefer a car or ride-hailing over a scooter in heavy rain.
  • Health? Repellent in the evening, and travel insurance that covers the activities you plan.
  • Budget? Use the median and the range in the index tables, not a single figure, and run the numbers in the trip cost tool.
  • Documents? Entry rules change; the visa rules guide gives the position with its date.

How the data on this page works

Nothing on this page is typed by hand if the data covers it. Climate numbers are tokens resolved from the climate normals; visitor and occupancy figures are tokens from the Ministry’s monthly tables; airport figures come from the Airports of Thailand reports; prices come from the index’s latest point for each series, always with the month they were observed. When the index adds a new observation, the tokens move and the numbers move with them. The methodology page describes how each series is collected and the sample thresholds that decide whether a median is published.

Two limits are worth stating plainly. The climate figures are reanalysis for one west-coast grid point, so they describe the west coast rather than every corner of the island. And the Ministry’s provincial figures count visitors to the province, not the number sleeping in any one area, so a quiet month in the statistics does not translate directly into an empty beach.
