Sport and adventure in Phuket

Phuket's sport is on the water and in the hills. The two Racha islands are the home dive sites, diveable most of the year; Kata has the island's most consistent beach break from May to October and no surf at all from November; the kite wind blows onto Nai Yang in one monsoon and onto Rawai in the other; the yacht marinas on the north-east coast run Phang Nga Bay day charters year-round; three championship golf courses sit within forty minutes of any resort; and Soi Ta-iad in Chalong is a kilometre of Muay Thai camps that sell drop-in classes for a few hundred baht. Prices are the operators' own where a dated figure exists; dive trips and yacht charters, quoted per person per season or per boat, show a dash rather than a guess.

Day yacht charter from Ao Po Grand Marina or Yacht Haven

Bang Tao · Sport and adventure · 8 h

Aucun prix daté enregistré

Horaires: Day charters typically 09:00–17:00; sunset charters from 15:00

Meilleur moment: November–April; Phang Nga Bay is sheltered enough for most green-season days too

Saison: Ao Po faces the bay, not the Andaman — the east coast marinas work in the wet season when west-coast boats stay in

Enfants: Oui · Pluie: Non

The two big marinas on the north-east coast — Ao Po Grand Marina and Yacht Haven at the top of the island — are where the sailing catamarans and motor yachts for Phang Nga Bay day charters are based: the limestone islands, Koh Hong's lagoon, James Bond island by lunchtime, a swim off Koh Yao, back for sunset. Day rates depend on the boat, the crew and the season and are quoted per vessel (often in dollars by the charter platforms), so no single figure is shown; an eight-person catamaran for a day is a serious four-figure dollar decision, split eight ways a different one. The east coast is sheltered from the south-west monsoon, which is why these charters run in months when the west-coast speedboats are cancelled.

Diving at Racha Yai and Racha Noi

Chalong · Sport and adventure · 9 h

Aucun prix daté enregistré

Horaires: Boats leave Chalong pier around 08:00, back by 16:00–17:00

Meilleur moment: November–April for visibility; Racha runs year-round because it is sheltered enough

Saison: Green-season crossings are lumpy; seasickness tablets before boarding

Enfants: Non · Pluie: Oui

The two Racha islands 20 km south of Chalong are Phuket's home dive sites — sandy bays, hard-coral slopes, 15–30 m visibility in the cool months and enough shelter to dive most days of the wet season. A two-dive day trip from Chalong includes the boat, lunch and a dive guide; Racha Yai is the beginners' and try-dive site, Racha Noi the deeper one with a chance of mantas from January to April. Operators price in baht per trip and quotes change with the season and the equipment rented, so no single price is shown here; the island tours index tracks the snorkelling-trip market separately. Divers with joint pain after a dive go to the hyperbaric chamber, not the nearest hospital — see the hospitals catalogue.

Golf: Blue Canyon Country Club

Nai Yang · Sport and adventure · 5 h

1,950–5,500 THB ≈ $59–167 · prix daté du 31 juil. 2026

Horaires: Tee times from about 06:30; twilight from early afternoon

Meilleur moment: November–March; the July 2026 promotion shows how far green-season rates fall

Saison: Two courses — Canyon (championship) and Lakes; the Canyon hosted the Johnnie Walker Classic three times

Enfants: Non · Pluie: Non

The island's best-known course, ten minutes from the airport: the Canyon Course, cut through old tin-mine lakes and rubber plantations, hosted the Johnnie Walker Classic in 1994, 1998 and 2007, and the Lakes Course is the gentler sister. Rates swing with the season more than anywhere else on the island — the club's own July 2026 promotion sold the Canyon Course for 2,800 THB including caddie, cart and a food voucher, with twilight rounds at 1,950 THB, while high-season agent quotes run 3,500–5,500 THB. It is the course to play if you play one. Stay in Nai Yang or Mai Khao and it is on the doorstep.

Source: Blue Canyon official promotions, July 2026: Canyon Course 2,800 THB all-in, twilight 1,950 THB; agents quote 3,500–5,500 THB in high season

Golf: Laguna Golf Phuket

Bang Tao · Sport and adventure · 5 h

3,500–5,000 THB ≈ $106–152 · prix daté du 5 sept. 2026

Horaires: Tee times from about 06:30; twilight rates after 14:00–15:00

Meilleur moment: November–April; book early morning in the hot months

Saison: Green-season rates are lower and the course is soft; afternoon storms stop play

Enfants: Non · Pluie: Non

The 18-hole parkland course in the middle of the Laguna resort complex at Bang Tao, redesigned in 2015 with lagoons and the Bang Tao hills as backdrop, and the one course on the island you can walk to from a hotel. Green fees are quoted at roughly 3,500–5,000 THB depending on season and agent, plus a caddie fee of around 700 THB and an optional cart; caddies are compulsory in Thailand and tipped. It is the flattest and friendliest of the three main courses. Blue Canyon and Red Mountain, both about thirty minutes east, are the championship tests.

Source: Phuket golf guides and booking agents, 2026: green fees about 3,500–5,000 THB; one listing 3,700 THB plus 700 THB caddie

Golf: Red Mountain Golf Club

Patong · Sport and adventure · 5 h

4,500–6,000 THB ≈ $136–182 · prix daté du 5 sept. 2026

Horaires: Tee times from about 06:30

Meilleur moment: Early morning, November–April

Saison: Steep and cart-only; the afternoon storm stops play in the green season

Enfants: Non · Pluie: Non

The dramatic one: an 18-hole course built in 2007 in a former tin mine in the Kathu hills between Patong and Phuket Town, with red-earth cliffs, big elevation changes and the 17th hole played from a ledge down to a green far below. It is cart-only and the nearest championship course to the west-coast resorts — fifteen minutes from Patong. Green fees run from about 4,500 THB to 6,000 THB depending on season and agent, caddie extra. Loch Palm, the sister course next door, is the easier and cheaper round on the same site.

Hanuman World zipline and skywalk

Chalong · Sport and adventure · 3 h

2,200–3,490 THB ≈ $67–106 · prix daté du 5 sept. 2026

Horaires: 08:00–17:00 daily, sessions on the hour

Meilleur moment: First session of the morning, before rain builds

Saison: Runs in light rain; closes for thunderstorms

Enfants: Oui · Pluie: Non

The largest zipline park on the island, in the hills above Chalong on the road to Kathu: up to 32 platforms of ziplines, a roller zipline, a skywalk through the canopy and a luge, sold as packages from a bare 18-platform course at 2,200 THB to the full World A+ at 3,490 THB, with a buffet lunch in the bigger packages. A free shared shuttle collects from most resort zones. Children from about four can ride tandem with an instructor. Three hours all in; it is the outdoor family morning that works when the sea is rough, as long as there is no lightning.

Kitesurfing at Nai Yang and Rawai

Nai Yang · Sport and adventure · 3 h

3,000–4,000 THB ≈ $91–121 · prix daté du 5 sept. 2026

Horaires: Daytime, wind-dependent; schools open in their season only

Meilleur moment: Nai Yang May–September (south-west wind); Rawai and Nai Harn November–April (north-east wind)

Saison: Two spots, two seasons — the island has wind somewhere almost all year

Enfants: Non · Pluie: Oui

Phuket has kite wind in both monsoons, on opposite sides of the island: the south-west wind blows onto Nai Yang beach near the airport from about May to September, and the north-east wind onto the shallow lagoon off Rawai and Nai Harn from November to April. Schools such as Kiteboarding Asia move with the season. A two-to-three-hour introductory session with equipment runs about 3,000–4,000 THB; a full IKO Level 1 course over ten hours around 15,000 THB. Rawai's flat, waist-deep water is the easier learning ground; Nai Yang has waves. Both are far from the tourist strips, which is part of the appeal.

Source: Phuket kitesurfing guides, 2025–2026: introductory sessions about 3,000–4,000 THB; IKO Level 1 group course (10 h) 15,000 THB

Muay Thai drop-in class (Tiger Muay Thai, Chalong)

Chalong · Sport and adventure · 1.5 h

500–600 THB ≈ $15–18 · prix daté du 5 sept. 2026

Horaires: Classes from 07:30 to about 19:00, Monday–Saturday

Meilleur moment: The early-morning class, before the heat

Saison: Indoor under roof; runs in rain

Enfants: Non · Pluie: Oui

Soi Ta-iad in Chalong is the island's fitness street — a kilometre of Muay Thai camps, MMA gyms, CrossFit boxes and protein cafés — and Tiger Muay Thai is the largest of them. Anyone can buy a drop-in pass at the desk, about 500 THB a class or 4,500 THB for ten, and join a beginners' Muay Thai session: pad work, technique, a lot of sweat. No booking, gloves lent. The neighbouring camps (Phuket Top Team, Dragon and others) price similarly. It is the cheapest genuinely Thai activity on this list and the one most visitors remember; the fight nights in Patong are the spectator version.

Source: Tiger Muay Thai price page and 2026 training-cost guides: 500 THB per class (4,500 THB for ten), 600 THB quoted by some sources; VAT extra

Sea-kayaking Phang Nga Bay: John Gray's 'Hong by Starlight'

Bang Tao · Sport and adventure · 9 h

3,350 THB ≈ $102 · prix daté du 5 sept. 2026

Horaires: Afternoon into night, roughly 12:00 pickup to 22:00 return

Meilleur moment: A moonless night for the bioluminescence; runs year-round

Saison: The bay is sheltered from the south-west monsoon; trips run through the green season

Enfants: Oui · Pluie: Oui

The original Phang Nga Bay sea-canoe trip, run since the 1980s by the American who first paddled into the bay's tidal caves: an afternoon boat out from the east coast, inflatable canoes paddled by guides through the low sea-caves into the hongs — open-roofed lagoons inside the limestone islands — dinner on the boat, a floating krathong, and a paddle back into a cave in the dark to see the bioluminescent plankton. 3,350 THB per person with transfers and dinner. It is not cheap next to the James Bond island speedboats in the tours index, and it is a different trip: quiet, guided, and the one people rank first afterwards.

Surf House Phuket (flowrider), Kata

Kata · Sport and adventure · 1 h

990 THB ≈ $30 · prix daté du 5 sept. 2026

Horaires: Hourly sessions 12:00–20:00 daily

Meilleur moment: Late afternoon, then stay for the bar

Saison: Runs year-round — the wave is a machine; the answer when the sea is flat or flagged

Enfants: Oui · Pluie: Oui

An artificial standing wave on the Kata beach road (with a second one in Patong): a sheet of fast water over a padded slope where you ride a bodyboard or a flowboard, fall off, and go again for an hour. Shared sessions cost 990 THB an hour, a private lane for up to ten people 8,950 THB. The bar and restaurant around it are a Kata evening in themselves. It works for children from about seven and for anyone who wants to surf in the flat high season, when the real waves at Kata do not exist.

Surf lesson at Kata Beach

Kata · Sport and adventure · 1.5 h

1,000–1,600 THB ≈ $30–49 · prix daté du 5 sept. 2026

Horaires: Schools on the sand from about 09:00 to sunset, May–October

Meilleur moment: May–October; the swell is smallest in May and October, best for beginners

Saison: No surf November–April — the sea is flat; schools pack up

Enfants: Oui · Pluie: Oui

Kata Yai is the island's most consistent beach break, and from May to October half a dozen surf schools set up at its northern end with soft-top boards and instructors who put beginners on their feet in an hour. Lessons cost roughly 1,000–1,600 THB an hour depending on the school and whether photos are included; board rental alone is a few hundred baht an hour. The same swell that makes the lessons possible makes the rips real — the schools stay in the marked zone and so should you. From November to April there is no surf on Phuket at all; the sea goes flat and the schools close.

Source: Kata surf-school listings, 2025–2026: group lesson about 1,000 THB an hour; Whale Surf School 1,200–1,600 THB; SSS Phuket from 1,500 THB

About this category

Seasons decide the sport as much as the price. Surf and Nai Yang kiting are green-season activities; Rawai kiting, diving visibility and golf are best in the dry months, with golf green fees falling sharply in the wet ones — Blue Canyon's own July 2026 promotion was a third of the high-season agent rate.

The list, in numbers

11 entries across 5 areas (Bang Tao, Chalong, Nai Yang, Patong, Kata); 0 free, 6 that work in rain, 5 suitable for children. The cheapest dated price is Muay Thai drop-in class at 500–600 THB, the highest Golf: Red Mountain Golf Club at 4,500–6,000 THB. From Kata the nearest entry is Surf House Phuket (flowrider), Kata, 0.1 km in a straight line; from Panwa it is 8.5 km to Hanuman World zipline and skywalk, about 25 minutes on the site's indicative road model. Distances in the table are straight-line from the area centre and the minutes come from a stated model (1.4 × the straight line at 30 km/h); they say which entry is nearest, not how long the taxi takes on a wet-season evening.

Prices are dated anchors from the operators and resellers, or — for the packaged boat trips — the median the site's tours index measured across operators in its latest monthly snapshot; a dash means no honest figure exists. Dollar values use the ECB reference rate on file (32.98 THB per dollar, 3 sept. 2026). The full catalogue of places and activities, with the top-ten short answer and the by-area table, is on the things-to-do hub; the beaches catalogue covers all 25 beaches with the sea by month.

Questions fréquentes

What are the best sport and adventure options in Phuket?

11 entries are listed on this page: Day yacht charter from Ao Po Grand Marina or Yacht Haven, Diving at Racha Yai and Racha Noi, Golf: Blue Canyon Country Club, Golf: Laguna Golf Phuket, Golf: Red Mountain Golf Club, Hanuman World zipline and skywalk and others. Each carries its area, hours, a dated price or the tours-index median, and whether it works with children and in rain. This is a catalogue with sources, not a ranking; the hub's short answer gives a three-day order.

How much do sport and adventure activities cost in Phuket?

Dated prices run from 500–600 THB (Muay Thai drop-in class) to 4,500–6,000 THB (Golf: Red Mountain Golf Club). Every figure carries its date and source; boat trips show the tours-index median per person. Nothing is estimated — an entry without a dated figure shows a dash.

Which area is best for sport and adventure in Phuket?

The entries are in Bang Tao, Chalong, Nai Yang, Patong, Kata. Kata is the closest area to an entry (Surf House Phuket (flowrider), Kata, 0.1 km); Panwa is the farthest (8.5 km to Hanuman World zipline and skywalk, ≈ 25 min on the stated road model). The nearest-by-area table on this page gives the figure for every area, and each area page lists hotels, villa rents and the airport transfer for staying there.
